I am now deep in the dad-taxi-verse. Rather than wasting my time playing battle cats or something equally banal, I thought I would try to get a bit of painting in.

Before I go deep down the rabbit hole looking for equipment and containers and suchlike, I was wondering if anyone else had any recommendations.

The idea would be to take 1 or 2 models and just a few paints to get some simple base coating or colour blocking in done when I would otherwise be faffing.

I wouldn't bother with painting but if I were constantly in similar situation I would consider using the time to prepare models. Cleaning mold lines carefully takes a lot of time but doesn't need much equipment.

I agree that cleanup/assembly would fit better as a car activity.

With painting, I’d worry about spills and cleanup, but also posture and positioning. I just don’t see a good, comfortable way to do it.

If you were camped out in a parking lot for half an hour or something like that, I could see having a little folding table/chair in the back of the car you could break out. But I’d not want to paint with the steering wheel in the way, or even on the dash in the passenger’s seat. YMMV depending on make of car.

Get a little RV and set up a workshop in the back?

I hear you on the "fit some painting time in" cry. I agree with the above though, finding a good set-up in a car would be rough. Nev's table and chair idea seems best. Or if you have a car type with the lift door back where the floor of the trunk space is level with the bumper area, maybe just a folding chair and using it as your shelf?

Good luck.

Keeping the hobby side alive!

I never forget the Dakka unit scale is binary: Units are either OP or Garbage.

I have largely transitioned to printing my own models, and so cleaning and assembly has dropped off substantially.

I also have a VW Touran, so front seats are quite upright and have decent space. I agree that the driver seat probably won’t work due to the steering wheel.

Do you have the tray tables in the rear like the sharan?

Yes it does. Good point. Need to rearrange the car seats, but that’s easy enough.

So then just need a little project case. Might try it out tomorrow.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
I see on Amazon you can get trays that hook onto the steering wheel, but they’re probably a bit flimsy.

Tell your kids you're not going to sit in the car waiting for them and if they don't hurry up they can walk home?

Hah! May, this is edumacational and sport based classes, so stuff I most definitely want to encourage

So I found a neat little project box on Thingiverse that will take 15 paints and a bunch of brushes. The lid is magnetised so it should hold together well enough. The paint slots might be big enough to hold a model each, alternatively I will print some wee boxes for transporting the models themselves.

Just need a wee water pot and
I’ll be good to go. I already have some holders for dropper bottles that are pretty mobile. It’s now all so over the top, I love it. I could have done exactly the same effect as this with an old ice cream tub, but where is the fun in that

Total theoretical here, as I don’t use one, but a thought on paints:

Wet palette.

You hear that the easy way to put one together is some parchment paper, a sponge, and a tupperware/sealed container. And in theory keep your paint fresh for days. Load one up before the trip with all the colors you need, take it on the road, and voila, instant paint station. No spills. Might run out of what you prepped, but you should get better about judging volumes.

I'm be more concerned about the risk of spilling paint or getting shavings everywhere in your car.

If you are at the point where your kids are big enough to drop off places and you are waiting for them, your car has seen FAR worse splashed across the upholstery then some plastic shavings and a tiny bottle of paint.

Not that your point is without merit, but it’s a perspective thing.

If the weather is nice enough couldn’t you have a little fold up table and chair in your car and paint next to the car rather than in it?

My main concern would be room to manoeuvre but it depends what car you’ve got I guess

@Nevelon - great idea. I have a couple of wet palettes due from a severely overdue kickstarter. When they turn up I'll try one definitely.

My car is a disaster area of spilled food and empty packets... my children have firmly decided that bins are something that only happen to other people. Work in progress shall we say.

@mrfickle - I live in Scotland. An hours wait usually involves 1 or 2 changes in the weather, so best to plan for things under cover

We have a lot of travel sickness in the family so Nurgle has nothing on the amount of vomit that has blasted across the interior of our car. Paint would be an improvement!

The past few weekends have been busy, but I’m back to dad taxi duty, and this time I’m prepared!

It work quite well in the back seats, thanks Rybrook. Now just to remember that the back doors have child locks on…

I’m just trialling with bases today as they don’t need much precision, but an hour of progress here will give me more home painting time for better stuff.

Nice set up.

Probably more space then some people here work with!
