This is a part of the comics I know almost nothing about and this trailer doesn't tell me much about them other than being seemingly immortal aliens that look like humans.
Amidst the mists and coldest frosts he thrusts his fists against the posts and still insists he sees the ghosts.
I love the joke that is going around for these guys right now:
"When humanity needs us most, we won't intervene"
"When humanity needs us least, we'll do something".
But yeah, what a load of hooey. There's going to be some weird background explanation for why these guys basically did jack all during the Invasion of New York with Loki, Thanos' TWO invasions of Earth, and the whole Ultron thing too.
Doesn't help they're going for such a huge ensemble cast, which means at best we'll have maybe one or two characters with actual development while all the other ones are one-note characters/comic relief. Considering Marvel was the one who set up the whole single movie build-up to ensemble movie formula that they would have factored that prior to this movie. Feels like they think they've built enough of a fanbase that they don't need that prep work anymore for these types of films...
Do we know at what point this movie is even taking place in the MCU? Pre or post snap? I know a lot of scenes will definitely happen in the very distant past. So that could avoid the whole Snap issue.
There is a lot of wiggle room for them here. As usual, Fanbase does bad fanbase things because they don't know the full details.
Of them, Thena, Ajak, Sersi, and Ikaris are top billed, and also show up more than the others in the Lego sets. Speaking of which, the sets mostly depict them fighting against the Deviants. Given the "history of humanity" nature of the story, I'd wager that they've all gone out to live among humanity and as we follow the main cast, they encounter the others at different set pieces rather than focus on any kind of real team dynamic. Celestials appear to be involved as well. I'm not sure if they'll go with the "Deviants seem bad but are really trying to avoid being eaten by Celestials who are actually bad" so soon after Capt Marvel, but the Skrulls I think are technically their descendants so....

Don't worry, almost no one does and even people that do will generally admit that there isn't much to know when it comes to these guys.
And that clean slate may actually work for Marvel...once again.

LOL. I don't know the exact history, but yeah...Eternals always seemed like another Fighting American. I.E. That thing that's a lot like the other, better thing he previously created that's owned by a different publisher.
At this point, I'm almost willing to believe that this is happening just so that Feige can be first-to-market with the cosmic gods concept and rub WB/DC's nose in it.

Post, since they specifically have one of the kid ones mention that Iron Man and Cap are both Gone.
As an aside, I really don't get why they went with immortal children as a thing. Its... problematic on a lot of levels, not least being miserable for the person experiencing thousands of years as a brat, and (theoretically) dealing with a child's body chemistry forever. And how did the others become adults? On the practical side, you've got child actors and the problem of sequels as the actors age and the characters don't. This is definitely one of those areas where you stuff 'comics canon' where the sun doesn't shine and do something sane instead.

Yep. They're instantly non-sympathetic because they sat everything out. And if Gilgamesh is _that_ Gilgamesh, it raises all sorts of questions about how little they actually interfere, and human agency in the face of demigods from the dawn of history that might have interfered. There are a lot of places to overthink this, and who knows if the movie itself is self-aware enough to deal with all the traps it creates by simply existing.

Not just that stuff, but well, slavery, the crusades, the black death, the World Wars, the treatment of any indigenous group at the hands of colonialists. The whole 'watched them create wonders' line is a bit hollow. It's like keeping your three-year-old son's rainbow painting on the fridge while the adult version is doing time for murder. They're also happy to let the Asguardians leave Cosmic Level Artifacts lying around in tombs.

Oh, for sure. Sometimes it's just fun to poke in the cracks.
With Endgame closing one era it looks like the next one is being introduced with some of the lesser known inhabitants of the Marvel Universe, much like it did right at the start.

And that right there is the power of brand that I was talking about, folks.
Not poking fun at you, MDG. There will be lots of people just like you who'll head to theaters for this one because of the Marvel stamp...and not because of anything else you're seeing there. Without that brand equity, this could easily be another 'fresh idea' film that bombs after no one shows up to watch it.
As to Eternals doing nothing during Thanos war I read somewhere (do not remember where) that because of the manipulations of one of their kind they lived as normal people, having lost their memories etc.

That's broadly the plot of the Gaiman run, Sprite (the child one) has had enough of being an unaging child so uses its reality bending powers to muddle most of the rests memory and becomes human, then some Celestial shennanigans ensue, might be an interesting prelude to Sprite being a recurring bad as they are meddlesome on a Loki level with next to no regard for humans if a version of that gets used
"AND YET YOU ACT AS IF THERE IS SOME IDEAL ORDER IN THE WORLD, AS IF THERE IS SOME...SOME RIGHTNESS IN THE UNIVERSE BY WHICH IT MAY BE JUDGED."

That's a fair point. Heck, even with the brand am I going to bother to go to watch it? It could be an interesting and rewarding watch except that nothing in the trailer looks remotely interesting.

No offence taken
I don’t disagree. Certainly even if this does turn out to suck, it’s still gonna at least break even because so many people will see a MCU film because it’s a MCU film - its those that follow that might suffer.
However, it is a pedigree well earned. Sure some of the entries aren’t as good as others (Thor the Dark World). But none of them have been objectively bad films. It’s a brand that built its way up from not a lot to becoming the cinematic juggernaut of the modern day.

We live in a world where people are a bit more savvy to hype trailers. A proven track record carries a bit more weight in a world bombarded with marketing.

If this trailer is what's supposed to get me hyped for this film, it failed miserably.
Based on the trailer alone, I have zero desire to watch this.
I'll wait until it's streaming on Disney+ for no extra cost.

And had there been an MCU subplot where they got taken out (or, indeed, if this film was a retro one that explains what they were up to), then fine. But that isn't what is presented in the trailer.
What we got is an extended (found?) family that's pretty chill about the fact that they've never helped and humanity is pretty groovy and beautiful or whatever.
So after the world (universe) was trashed and fought like hell to come back, and is still struggling through aftershocks (see Wanda and F&WS), and a bit rudderless with the loss of some of the lead heroes, the Eternals are... ready for a beach party, I guess?
It sets up no stakes, no reasons to care, and no reason to expect they're willing or able to contribute. Presumably some villain will show up to punch them in the face and they'll have to find and rally each other to stop... whoever... from doing... whatever thing... that is presumably bad. And I guess they'll learn something today and support humanity until the sequel or something. There's zero zip to offset the posing indifference and silly outfits.
I agree, this trailer does not exactly make me want to see the movie opening night.
I have some friends who likely will see it that weekend, so I'll get their review before going myself. I'm almost certain to watch it at some point, but before shelling out for movie tickets I want something a bit more exiting than this trailer presents.
From what I can tell, this is a teaser rather than a trailer proper, so it’s purpose isn’t so much to get people in cinemas to watch it, or to give plot hints, but instead to make people aware that it’s happening and to start people talking about it before the first proper trailer arrives.
Seems like it’s doing it’s job fairly well to me.
I’ll probably see it as on the strength of it being an MCU film.
I think this movie is going to lay some heavy ground work for the celestials.
Like... as actual entities that do things in the MCU, not just nowhere existing in one of their skulls or that flash back in GotG 1 where you see one destroy a planet with the power stone.
These are my opinions. This is how I feel. Others may feel differently. This needs to be stated for some reason.

One of the Lego sets is Arishem, leader of the Celestials who according to the description has teamed up with the Eternals to fight the Deviants. Lego sets often make up the scenarios behind the characters from scratch and aren't great for plot details, but given there's a figure of him by name, I'd expect Arishem to be in the film in some capacity.
