Who would you consider as the top 5 among the chapter masters? (Fluff and fluff alone)

Gotta clarify in terms of era, are you talking about current ones in the latest time of the fluff? Or are you saying across the entirety of the Imperium's existence, which includes the time of the GC, HH and the Scouring?

Assuming it's spanning across the entirety of the Imperium's history, I'd say,

1. Tactical prowess goes for guys like Alexis Polux since he outmaneuvred Perturabo himself in the Battle of Phall, Marneus Calgar, Azrael, Carab Culln, and I would say Pedro Kantor to some extent since he managed to keep the Crimson Fists alive despite being on the brink of extinction.

2. Combat Abilities. Sigismund is definitely the top one here by far, followed by guys like Asterion Moloc, Nassir Amit/Gabriel Seth and Logan Grimnar and Dante.

I'll do 2 lists to cover current and historical
Modern
Spoiler:

Tactical:
1- Calgar, he's defended Ultramar from Behemoth, multiple Chaos invasions, da Orks, the T'au and countless more. He isn't flawless though.
2- Dante, see Devastation of Baal for why.
3- Pedro Kantor, despite a tragedy wiping out more than half the Crimson Fists, Kantor led them to victory over the Orks at Rynns World and slowly rebuilt the chapter.
4- Lugft Huron AKA Huron Blackheart, before falling to Chaos he was a brilliant commander and actually had some neat ideas of keeping the Maelstrom contained. Too bad the High Lords are idiots.
5- Carab Culn, won the Badab War and wasn't a huge prick about it *cough*Minotaurs*cough*Carcharadons*cough*.

Combat
1- Tyberos the Red Wake, he's one scary dude.
2- Gabriel Seth, rip and tear but be heroic about it.
3- Shrike, he does sneaky rip and tear. The Hunt for Voldorius shows it well.
4- Sentor Jool, my man faced down Khabanda, even though he ate it afterwords it was cool.
5- Gabriel Angelos, beats up anyone and everyone including his own chapter when it has a civil war. Got a big hammer and a bigger forehead.

Historical
Spoiler:

Tactical
1- Maximus Thane, he won the War of the Beast and saved the Imperial Fists.
2- Remus Venatus, was one of the most important leaders in the Battle of Calth and the Underwar.
3- Autek Mor, absolutely rage machine razed the World Eaters recruiting World and then proceeded to purge his way through traitors during the Scouring.
4- Abbadon, he was a prick but still an amazing commander. Got outplayed by Perturabo though and got punched across a room. Lmao.
5- Forrix, not an awful Iron Warrior who gets bored of war and just as he gets his groove back he gets Plasma blasted by a Warhound.

Honourable Mention: Saul Tarvitz, a mere Captain of the Emperors Children outplayed and outmaneuvered Horus himself at Isstvan III, messing up Horus's plan to kill of the loyalists and keep the Emperor in the dark about the forthcoming Heresy.

Combat
1- Sigismund, dude killed hundreds of traitor champions at Terra and nearly killed Abbadon during the 1st Black Crusade.
2- Nathaniel Garro, all round good guy and badass. He's probably gonna bite it in a future Siege of Terra book just to make people angry.
3- Argel Tal, RIP best Chaos boy who wasn't just flat out evil.
4- Sevatar, he beat Sigismund in a duel. No it doesn't matter if he cheated.
5- Fafnir Rann, was destined to defeat the Dorn clan and save his people, until Rogal showed up and the prophecy got dropped. Rann never held it against Rogal and was an all round madlad Breacher who founded the Executioners.

Honourable Mention: Bjorn the Fellhanded, this guy leads the Wolves, becomes a dreadnought and then beats up Magnus the Red at the Battle of the Fang. Legend.

By definition, HH stuff is irrelevant as chapters weren’t a thing at that point…

Please excuse any spelling errors. I use a tablet frequently and software keyboards are a pain!

Yeah they were. Legions were split into Chapters and then Companies but sometimes they just had different names i.e. Chapter for the Word Bearers and Ultramarines, Clans for the Iron Hands, Grand Companies for the Iron Warriors and so on. Also many Legion masters would go on to become future Chapter Masters like Sigismund, Mor and others.

Who are the top five CMs?

1. Dante
2. Dante
3. Dante
4. Dante
5. Dante

Cuz I spit hot fire.....

(See Chappelle show for reference)

But seriously, Dante, and then maybe a close second is Calgar, but I don't like that because he has the best of everything, constant re-supply, and basically anything he wants.

Dante was by himself and less than half his chapter when he held off a tyranid invasion, and a demon attack.

Wait, does Trajan count? Or No, Mawloc. He's the only one who literally scares a Custodian.

If by “Trajan” you’re referring to Valrois rather than some smurf who’s not a CM, then no, as much as I like the golden boys, this topic is for the astartes only.

Should have clarified this in the OP: I was actually asking for the current “top 5 chapter masters” , so old Sigi doesn’t count. Calgar and good old Dante definitely comes to mind, but how about Azrael and Helbrecht?
