Ever have a 40k model with bits so small and hard to get in you just didn't or couldn't get them right?

On a necron dda i left out some of the hoses on the pilots back, to small and hard to get in place. looked better without them with with them badly positioned.

(also on DDAs is seems many players leave the gauss guns off as they break on a 2+ whenever you transport or move the ark.)

Currents painting and finishing 3 tomb blades, might have issues with some of the cables in the pilots backs.

Anyone else have a story about a bit so damn small, fiddly, etc that you ended up leaving in off the model?

not so much left out as removed, but on my skitarii, i tend to clip off most of the various pipes that dangle form their backpacks, becuase they are small, fiddly, and frankly i just think the models look a little better with a slightly "cleaner" look.

To be a man in such times is to be one amongst untold billions. It is to live in the cruelest and most bloody regime imaginable. These are the tales of those times. Forget the power of technology and science, for so much has been forgotten, never to be relearned. Forget the promise of progress and understanding, for in the grim dark future there is only war. There is no peace amongst the stars, only an eternity of carnage and slaughter, and the laughter of thirsting gods.

1) The hand rails on old school rhinos.
Sure, I put them on on my first several. And in relative short order they were broken, I couldn't repair them well enough, & ended up removing the broken parts .... So I skipped them on all future rhinos.

2) The Necron pilots in my doom/night scythes. This is because I hate the open topped look. So I installed a flat black panel on the inside of the hull to cover the cockpit. Well, the Necron pilot is in the way of that working. So I left the pilots out.

3) Also Necron related. The body Szeras is draining (and the blood effect). I left this off the base because I miss-aligned Szeras when I put him on the base & simply didn't have room for the body without it hanging off the edge pretty badly & looking poor.

4) The Hospitaler in my SoB force. I eft the dead body off her base & put her on the same size base as every other SoB figure.

One one of my drop pods I left the central bit with all the harness out. Massive PITA to paint, and when I built it dreads could still ride in basic pods. That way my justification for list skipping it.

Rails on old rhinos. Actually a lot of vehicle accessories like smoke launchers and spotlights.

I reworked my stormraven a bit. Not sure where the line between leaving bits off and conversions is, but the top turret and air scoop are gone.

Two kind of things:
- Bits that will snap off anyways. Fiddly chaos spikes, antennas, gunsights or random ork spikes.
- Stuff that makes the model harder/take more time to paint. In general, I avoid additional crew on vehicles or optional pipes like you have on the helbrute.

7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks do not think that purple makes them harder to see. They do think that camouflage does however, without knowing why.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.

Internals of a drop pod. Figured i might aswell glue the doors shut and only paint the exterior. Then again, that kit got the better of me and I never painted it

For Assault Intercessors I did not bother with ammo packs, holsters and combat knives.

On regular ones they fit like a glove, but the added armor around the hips for Assault Intercessor made it a pita for me so I left it out.

Normally I try to add some bling in form of those small bits.

I haven't used much of the blingy stuff in the Sisters of Battle kits. They are optional bits anyways, so it's no great loss, but ultimately they just make already busy models even busier.

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/1/23, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~15000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Adeptus Custodes: ~1900 | Imperial Knights: ~2000 | Sisters of Battle: ~3500 | Leagues of Votann: ~1200 | Tyranids: ~2600 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000

I have never added an optional bit to a unit in my life. No pouches, no pistols, no grenades. If it's not covering up undetailed molding it stays on the sprue.

I’m the complete opposite.

I deliberately look for extra stuff I can throw on my models.

The busier and more detailed the better.

I have minimum quotas on the number of purity seals on my marines, and buy third party upgrade bits to make them look more medieval.

The only things I’ll remove is stupid looking mutations on chaos models and I removed all the nurglings from my Death Guard because they look too cartoony.

Hah, I've also got a good one - does anyone who hasn't build the model know where the grot gunner is on a megatrakk scrapjet?

Definitely skipping that git on my next scrapjet.

For me it's any flight stands for infantry models. I hate those things with a passion! They look wonky, they break if you look at them wrong, and are so darn annoying to transport. Plus, to me at least, infantry models look just fine without them.

(I've also never had an opponent pull the: "Modeling for advantage" card on me for this, but if I did I have already resigned myself to just letting the opponent have their way.)

Didn't bother with the packed up warriors on my ghost ark. That's probably my most significant deviation from the directions.

I've also left off things like wiring or hoses that make magnetizing weapons on vehicles more difficult to pull off. Doom Scythe and Leviathan Dreadnought weapons swaps specifically.

Otherwise, I tend to bling things up to give them some character.

The inner hatch/crosspiece in the rhino that's supposed to separate the driver from the crew compartment.

I know it's there to stiffen the model, but it's a pain to fit right and all the hatches are glued so it doesn't really matter.

I prefer to buy from miniature manufacturers that *don't* support the overthrow of democracy.

I've done the same here after fighting with the first one (or two?). If I recall correctly, the chimera and land raider have similar interior pieces that, if you're sealing the model shut, can be easily left out and make assembly easier.

Agree on Mortarion, but for Typhus, I actually went back and glued&painted the destroyer hive. In a flood of dirty white armor Typhus simply didn't stick out as much as he should (compared to other DG characters) IMO, and the destroyer hive just did that for him, even though it was a PITA to paint.
