I was just watching "Lucifer" and there was a scene with a russian fitness coach sitting at a full blown miniature painting table, complete with not one but 2 magnifying glasses in armatures, painting some historical naval ships and figures. (I'm pretty sure whoever set up his painting table rig was a real mini painter, it was too accurate to be something someone who never pained minis made up.)

i was reminded of an ep of 'columbo" where the killer was a civil war buff who had a huge table (I'd shed blood for that table!) set of with civil war miniatures and terrain. (I'd shed lots of blood for that table, if not the miniatures on it.) At the end after columbo leads the murderer away, the camera slowly pans onto the table and goes across if with some great flying dolly work, doing closeups of soldiers, horses, cannons, etc and finally coming to rest on... A perfect miniature of columbo himself, slightly mussed hair, rumbled trenchcoat, striking a columbo pose.

The table:

The mini columbo:

Deep space nine had Bashir and o'brien playing a tabletop miniature game of, i think, the alamo, and the last ep had one of the lost miniatures being found when a couch was moved.

I just had those memories of other cases where wargame related minis made an appearance in media, and wanted to know if people here had seen any. I never watched TBBT (Hated that show) but am absolutely certain it had plenty.

IIRC, an episode of Magnum P.I. featured the local game store's owner's 25mm Napoleonic Austrian Army. Of course it was supposed to be Higgins' collection, and he was solo gaming (again, IIRC), when Magnum entered the room for whatever the plot called for.

The 40 year old virgin movie has the protagonist painting GW models - it's close enough to recognise what they are, too.

An "outdoors"-y chain store (BCF, boats, camping and fishing) had a "better than a ..." campaign a few years back (in Oz) featuring a load of painted GW figures, too.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.

That is not dead which can eternal lie ...

... and yet, with strange aeons, even death may die.

House of Cards has Kevin Spacey building and painting ACW miniatures and tables throughout the series.

A latter season of New Tricks had the whole crime set around a school where one of the attending after school events was a historical wargame and Brian joined in and managed to win a competition during the investigation.

I think several Will Smith films have had warhammer models appear here and there about the place .

Theres an episode of Lewis featuring a variety of GW models. And I think the villain even stabs someone with a GW modelling knife.

Don’t quote me on that last part though, as I’ve only seen it the once.

The commander in Battlestar Galactica, portrayed by Edward James Olmos, in several episodes spends his spare time working on a model of a ship, a galleon. Mostly assembling details, painting and fixing damaged parts as the model is basically complete since the beginning of the series. Not a pirate ship but still belonging to that period.

Groundhog Day features Bill Murray exclaiming that one of the sub-characters painted little toy men in their basement, and was also gay.....

Of course, Bond also faced off against a famous wargamer in "General" Whitaker in The Living Daylights His tables were rigged with sound and lights too!

There was a documentary called Marwencol, which involved a fellow who created dioramas at his home as a sort of coping mechanism for past trauma. Not necessarily miniatures, but it does put the idea into the main focus of the doc.

Steve Carrell then starred in a fictional version of this story, but the name escapes me......

GW definitely missed a trick by not getting some product placement in The Big Bang Theory...

I find that BBT isn't really about geeks so much as it is just about Sheldon. A huge number of the puns are either Sheldon acting odd or other characters presuming what odd things Sheldon would do.

Sure, but they have had the guys playing a lot of board games, video games and RPGs over the years. Dungeons & Dragons, Risk, Halo, Age Of Conan, etc etc... I don't know whether these were paid-for product placements or just the writers using real products for authenticity though...

Probably a bit of both, esp once BBT started to become a major and popular series.

GW was in an early episode of the Highlander TV show...... not quite as popular as the Big Bang Theory, but it had several seasons on syndication and is all over streaming services.

They missed an opportunity to get meta. Zombicide Rue Morgue had homage characters clearly modeled off of the BBT cast. They could have played that version of Zombicide and made snide comments about how ludicrous these homage characters were. And the Sheldon figure was one of the promos in Zombicide Season 1 (the original).

In Callan, a 1974 film starring Edward Woodward (a hobbyist himself) and based on a previous TV series, the finale is all about a very impressive Gettysburg recreation. The full film is on Youtube (and has been some considerable time so I assume ok to link here) -

Jump to about 1hr 25m to see the hobby goodness. iirc it is actually Woodwards table and armies.

And here is Woodward himself, commentating on gaming on Tyne Tees telly about a million years ago -

Edit - seems to be a problem linking that one, but search Youtube for 'Edward Woodward Waterloo part 1'

Some other old fogey can rattle on about Peter Cushing

Surprised that stranger things hasn't been mentioned yet. The kids in that play D&D with miniatures, and there's a pretty badass intro scene in the latest series where one of the adults is painting too.

Peter Cushing, mostly known to people of my generation as Grand Moff Tarkin, was a miniature gamer. The short video below shows him painting, then playing with his minis.
