Would You Play 40k if Your Favorite Faction Was Removed?
Yes - I would move to another faction
Yes - but I would stick to old versions where my faction is valid
Maybe - I'm not entirely sure
No - I wouldn't play the game any more
I don't have an opinion, I just like voting in polls.

In my trend of starting polls, here's a big one.

Would you still play 40k if your favorite faction was removed? Squatted? Never included in rules, never given new models, and GW pretends that they no longer exist?

Would you move to your second-favorite faction and build on that instead? Would there still be enough appeal in 40k for you to continue with a different faction, or would the loss of your favorite faction be irredeemable?

The main reason I play 40k is that it's what I can play-there's no wargaming community by me except at GW. (And I never got into AoS, so it's just sci-fantasy for me.)

If GW did that, and I could find a way to play with other games, I'd likely do that. But that's a big if.

I play custodes because I don't make enough to buy 50 boxes of different models and I am not a good enough painter to win any awards, plus I suck at the game. So if they deleted Custodes I would likely stop playing as there are no cheaper armies than Custodes unless you count knights.

But if you meant deleted from the fluff, I dunno. I think they are all so integral to the main fluff you can't really lose one. I mean, maybe Tau or Custodes, because neither really factor into the grand scheme of things that much. Custodes are just bigger stronger Astartes, and Tau are such a fledgling race as to not really factor in much.

I guess GSC are kinda pointless as well as a playable faction.

Had to roll on Maybe.

Only Sisters stopped me from quitting when GSC were lost.
Being ignored and marginalized didn't stop me from playing in 4th or 5th.
6th's WD dex killed 6th and 7th.
It was GSC who brought me back at the tag end of 7th- never got the chance to play or even buy the BRB.
Sisters + GSC kept me through 8th- Indexes helped.
Crusade convinced me to buy into 9th rather than just keep playing 8th for the rest of my life.

If they squatted either of my armies, that would require a 10th edition- unless there's a nasty surprise on the way and the GSC don't get a 9th dex.
It won't even take losing a faction- if there's a tenth edition, I'm done- by which I mean I'll keep playing 9th ed Crusade for the rest of my life.

If a friend bought 10th ed books I could use, I'd try it. But I'm never buying into a new edition.
I can't even think of what they could do to change my mind. It wouldn't be one thing- they'd have to:
a) keep crusade
b) release Crusade content for all armies within the first 3 months and
c) commit to continued support for Sisters, GSC, the Inquisition and all its Chambers militant and
d) the unexpected thing that I can't yet foresee.

Actually, I figured it out: if they don't give us Emperor's Children in 9th, but they announce that they're doing it in tenth AND they do the other three things listed above, that might keep me. Maybe.

My favorite faction WAS SQUATTED from the game and I didn't play for 25yrs.

Other stuff brought me back with 8th, but I would never have stopped if they hadn't.

In case there's any ambiguity, I played Squats.

Hard to say. I voted “Maybe” The hypothetical here is so outrageous in my case, it's hard to give a solid answer without seeing what the causes were and what was going on.

Even if they wiped out my chapter for lore reasons, I could still play them as generic marines. My main army is Ultramarines. And I’m not sticking with just firstborn, but adding primaris. If they nuked the Ultras, I’d be a little torqued, but headcannon is a flexible thing, and Space Marines are rooted in the game. If I lost all the options to play Marines, the game would be Warhammer in name only. Space marines are such a core part of the game, they can never be entirely removed.

I do enjoy my Tyranid and Eldar forces. If Ultras were off the table, I’d still probably play with my secondary armies. Or spend more time working on my undead for AoS.

I've answered "no" to this because I don't play 40k according to current/official rules anymore, because all my favorite stuff has already been removed. It's not a hypothetical.

I'm a mono-Guard guy. If Guard are ever removed, possibly because sci-fi human soldier is hard to copywrite. Then I'm going to stop playing. I'll still be into the setting, but I'll never be supporting the miniatures or the other game assorted products again.

Favorite is Tau.

Yeah, if it was removed, I probably wouldn't play. But I'm not exactly playing now.

Same. I'm waiting to see what they do with the guard. Its been 20+ years since most regiments have got new models & should they decide my regiment doesn't need new models... I'm out. I collect my specific regiment for the same reason SM play a specific chapter. Its what brought me into the hobby in the first place. I'm hopeful but...its been over 2 decades. I feel like if they cared, they would have already.

I guess the answer would be - maybe??/a strong probably?? Predicated on the assumption that you meant "Would I continue to play the most recent edition?"
Fortunately, since what draws me to an army are the cool models, not the lore or even the rules, my tastes range all over the spectrum concerning 40k (and Sigmar). And I've been doing this for ages - so I've got a shelf full of armies & only a finite amount of time to play any of them in a week... thus swapping something out is never a problem. Favorite faction or not, I'm already rotating armies.

I suppose though we're I pissed enough I'd just play my favorite force in whatever the last edition they were in. Or whichever edition suits my foe....
We bust out WHFB 3rd ed now & then....)

+1 for Guard here, I voted "Yes, but only old editions" since I've collected all the Guard codices and spent more time on each of the 3e, 3.5e, and 5e codices than all the time I've spent on the Guard codices since. I've also got no qualms whatsoever about getting 3rd party sculpts - if GW doesn't want to sell the things I want to buy, then I'm not going to spend my money on what GW is offering in its place. Same goes for the rules.

Frankly even though I don't play any of them, I'm a little disturbed by the changes to Krieg, and the increasing limitation on alternate guard regiments. You'd like to think guard wouldn't go away, but what a hole in the stomach many Kriegers must have these days. To be honest any level of squatting should make any faction player apprehensive. GW should reaaaaly be careful with the message that could be sent in "spend tons of bucks and MAYBE your stuff will have a place in the future". Frankly one of the best things I've liked is how ancient models are often still perfectly playable. It would be a shame to lose that feature.

Well, I'd simply write my own rules for them or proxy the models as a different faction and continue playing, but the poll doesn't have that answer.

If they got rid of craftworld Eldar it'd be over for me. I collected them 15 years ago, and I could see myself collecting them another 15 years from now. GWs myriad space marine options won't keep me around.

As long as I have the miniatures to represent a legit army in correct sizes and wargear and I have opponents that share a common vision of the game yes, I'd keep playing. If one of my armies gets squatted I'd play the other one or proxy the squatted one as something else.

In fact I'd already proxied my firstborn Space Wolves into Adepta Sororitas multiple times already .

I definitely won't buy another army just to keep playing, because I somehow feel forced to do it. I may buy a new army because I like it though.

I would keep playing with my models but in Grimdark Future or some other GW inspired game.

I used to have a small Squat army and I remember being disappointed that they didn't have any rules in 3e. So it's happened to me before, but I didn't stop playing, I just moved to my second favourite faction, the Orks!

I like most of the factions in 40K anyway. So if they removed Orks I'd be pretty sad and annoyed, but if the game was fun I'd still play it with some of my other models while still using my orks in other games they fit into.

Despite having 2 main and favourite factions, my answer is no.
I already was teetering on the edge of stopping to play during 6th and 7th. the only reason i still did was because R&H... which now in essence are reduced to a single entry in the CSM book...

CSM themselves being my second fav army have a long history of basically sucking by design. Atleast ever since 4th edition, but it became even more egregious during 8th.
Especially after Faith and Fury in which basically all legions got a much deserved update, only to be hamstrung via having only 1 warlord trait for most legions accessible, being vastly imbalanced internally, but it also fell into the time were loyalists got shovelware galore of higher quality.Meanwhile in the same book you had the same content for 5 traitor legions page wise stappled to Black templars supplementary within it.... 5 legions get the same content as one loyalist chapter....

Iow, basically i felt like a second class custommer, the ruleset isn't really enticing anymore, GW already bloated the 9th with first day DLC ontop of dexes..
So yes i stpped playing more or less.

GW:"Space marines got too many options to balance, therefore we decided to legends HH units."
Players: "why?!? Now we finally got decent plastic kits and you cut them?"
Chaos marines players: "Since when are Daemonengines 30k models and why do i have NO droppods now?"
GW" MONEY.... erm i meant TOO MANY OPTIONS (to resell your army to you again by disalowing former units)! Do you want specific tyranid fighiting Primaris? Even a new sabotage lieutnant!"
Chaos players: Guess i stop playing or go to HH.

They squat orks, I'm gone.

I doubt that there is any chance of them doing that though.

7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks do not think that purple makes them harder to see. They do think that camouflage does however, without knowing why.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.
Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers.
Orks do not have the power of believe.

Had to say maybe. If Death Guard get dropped, can I keep playing using the same collection but just as Chaos Space Marines? That might keep me in. I also have a decent sized Ad Mech Army but I haven't enjoyed their rules that much since 7th edition.

But my heart belongs to Nurgle and losing the ability to use a collection built up over 7 years (7, whoooo!) would kill my enthusiasm.

My fav army are space marines if they where removed from 40k, I'm not sure 40k would be 40k anymore, they've become (for better or worse) so central.

Or, I'd expand the Ad Mech. Harlies are not really a full army, so only go so far.

The majority of my games were played throughout and either side of 5th edition with the sisters of battle - no rules or models since 3rd edition, no codex by the end of it (discontinued 2011), nothing on the shelves and referred to as 'other factions' at best in supplements.

Ultimately it was core rules changes more than faction changes that drove players away, and have so far continued to stall out efforts at a revival.

Forgeworld I don't really count but painting projects have suffered more than one premature end when they discontinued key models.
