I just read multiple posts about all this crap about what is bad about a game that was created for us all to have fun....

People whinging left right and centre about everything...

Tournament armies make up such a small percentages (espec in covid times, that it is almost irrelevant now days)

This post is about what it gives to you...\ what you like...

For me:

The expanded lore (though is inconsistent is good read) need more consistency

Mates I would have never met and though we talk about rules we never go on rampages and its always good humour. Gives good meta maxes without people doing stupid things (we all knew liquifier getting the nerf so never played it like that... or took obviously)

Awesome modelling (my biggest love is converting and modelling, second is painting)

Playing awesome narrative games...crusade giving more options for that

I enjoy the lore and the miniatures a lot.

Pity the actual game ruins my enjoyment of both of those. If you're wondering why I actually play the game, it's only because on certain weeks it's the only game I can get. Otherwise I'd rather play any number of other games (including many GW ones).

Some of the models look really nice, and you can see people playing the game.

I'm here for Necrons and pretty much Necrons alone (till I can get back into the groove of playing some games at least). They're my favourite sci-fi faction by a large margin and I just love everything about their nihilistic sense of manifest destiny and Shakespearean tragedy. The model line is gorgeous and I'm currently in the process of creating a library of all the Necron novels published currently (I already have the Codices starting from 3rd).

So its simple, as long as there's Necrons in 40k I'll continue to be happy.

I love converting and painting the miniatures (though I hate they are now monopose...pisses me off, have to trim out so many shoulders or green stuff so much stuff now)

I love the lore, just listened to Brutal Kunnin and was awesome (and I dont even like orks, but maybe a collection is to be had after this book...)

In no particular order:
- The lore and the setting. You have to ignore some things in your headcannon to get to fully enjoy it, but that is not something new. Somersaulting Terminators anyone?

- The models. While not every model can be a hit and some design decisions irk me like the gun proliferation on Primaris tanks, overall the quality of sculpts and kits is ever increasing.

- Increased community engagement compared to where it was some years ago (at 0) via Twitch, Youtube, the community site and social media.

- Curse and blessing at the same time, but regular balance "patches" are something that older editions direly needed imho. So that is a plus in my opinion.

- Shorter release cycles + every faction gets to have a codex for the edition now.

- "Mythical factions that only existed in the background" got proper releases over time like AdMech, Custodes, Harlequins. They increase the available flavour of armies and models.

- I really enjoy a round of Warhammer with my friends on a Sunday afternoon.

- Better rules than 6th and 7th : )

GW leaves itself wide open for criticism on alot of topics and imho you need a certain mindset when you approach Warhammer to prevent yourself from becoming frustrated, but overall it is one of my favourite spare time activities.

I wish they would give 3 weeks pre-register interest before release for pre-orders.

Though I have never missed a release I want (in Australia and I log on the second it is released here if want something), it would make it so much easier for others I recon. (they maybe could get other copies made to order before released cause know approx numbers).

Every faction gets a codex at start... Never gunna happen, game is to big. But I do wish they released like an index free for all to download they updated basic rules and points (like in 8th) but alas that point was to much money it seemed...

Sorry mate to hear...I love playing narrative games of 40k (tbh necromunda is my fav GW game) you need to come up with some narrative missions etc or fun games to take to your group if want (its what I do when sick of crap...I always come up with whacky things for people to play or do if they want....for options over a standard 40k game and we 90%time have a blast).

biggest to me origionally as a youth was the social aspect. several of my friends played and every saturday we would get together at the FLGS to play a few matches. Very few models were ever painted more as a game.

As I got older I got more into collecting models and tried painting to do a few tournaments and foudn i enjoyed it.

These days i am more of a painter/collector/ 3d printer of custom armies/bits. I look forward to being abel to play again one day but have young kids so its hard to get away for a game when i work weekdays and the wife works weekends.

The models, the lore, narrative play and all the crazy stuff that's going on in the game. People on dakka often seem to want a more streamlined, straight forward 40K and I get why that would be better for the tournament play I don't care about.
But actually having rules for every Grot pistol, strange axe and numerous funny special characters in all of the many factions actually is a big selling point I think. Because you can make up any army you want inspired by the lore and throw that on the table or in a campaign and the game gives you rules for your paint job and every weapon you choose for your knight. And that's great.

I also play Oathmark which goes the contrary way, where you have generic races with generic weapons and you simply throw your Lotr orcs on the table and let them fight it out against Warhammer bretonians if you like. This is also great, but a totally different approach and only works because Oathmark doesn't really have a setting outside of some small fluff blurbs in the BRB.

I mean it's the only game where I can take tanks with church organs on top, so what's not to like?

More seriously, the setting drew me in with the image of flying space churches lit by candlelight punching holes through hell to deliver space knights to alien worlds. Sisters double down on that so much I hit that like Tony Montana face diving a mountain of nose sugar.

As a setting it is unbeatable: designed to be inifinite in the stories that be told - and all the gaming, modelling, art and writing that can bring - yet with such a strong theme and feel running through it all.

The setting and the majority of the models are awesome.
I think it's probably one of the best wargame settings ever conceived, both in visual design and original idea, and provides endless potential to customise your dudes, or make up your own stories, or have reasons for any faction to fight any other faction.

Warmachine and Hordes or LOTR or any other game I've played doesn't come close to the scope and kitchen sink nature of 40K.

Rules wise, it's never been *great*, but it's rarely been so terrible I didn't want to play it (pretty much only 7th edition). I'm interested in 8th and 9th editions but haven't played them. I'd rather play a simplified version of them without strategems and so on though, to be honest. Those sorts of mechanics aren't really my thing.

Fantastic miniatures/models.

The art.
The lore/setting - it's ok. I like the current stuff less than in ages past, but 'eh.
The rules are alright enough at the moment. Nothing that can't be reasonably fixed within the circles I play in.

Social aspect. Getting together with friends & playing some games.

I said this in a few threads this week, but I feel like 9th does a good job of making you manage your resources. Much better than in past editions. Also like the models of course. Even when I'm not actively playing (sat out most of 7th), I can be found building/painting models.

Edit: I just googled ablutions and apparently it does not including dropping a duece. I should have looked it up early sorry for any confusion. - Baldsmug

Psiensis on the "good old days":

Wait, what were we talking about again? Did I ever tell you about the time I gave you five bees for a quarter? That's what you'd say in those days, "give me five bees for a quarter", is what you'd say in those days. And you'd go down to the D&D shop, with an onion in your belt, 'cause that was the style of the time. So there I was in the D&D shop..."

The lore, the models, the established player base, and the volume of choice.

The problem is that the game itself is often so poorly balanced AND poorly designed on a fundamental level that it undermines those really good qualities.Couple that in with a large barrier to entry and the accompanying investment required to play and if players feel burned, they're going to feel it even harder.

40K is the center of an immersive hobby; I can play it at any size and scale; when I don't feel like playing, I can paint and build; when I want to read, it's there; when I want a video game, it's there. And soon, when I want to watch TV, it's going to be there too.

It's been a part of my life for 34 years.

I can write stories set there, or play games that ARE stories; I can join stories that other people are playing or make my own.

I built a genestealer hybrid wearing a cowboy hat in 1996; GW gave me a Kellermorph. One of my Palatines found the shield of Saint Katherine buried beneath the chapel of Saint Katherine's Aegis during an Apocalypse game in 2008; GW gave me the Triumph of Saint Katherine.

Sometimes it feels like GW is reading my mind.

I love Crusade, and think it's a strength rather than a weakness that there are still blanks for me to fill in so that I can make it mine. I love escalation, and the game size mechanics and support that we have now has never existed before.

Escalation and Crusade are not the same, and yet the combination of the two is far greater than the sum of its parts. I love that there's at least Warcom and forums and White Dwarf when there's a slow period in the release schedule.

I love that I can take pride in my contributions and efforts in pursuit of the hobby.

When I speak of 40k, it should be understood that for me, BSF, Kill Team, Space Hulk, Necromunda, Aeronautica, Titanicus and Battlefleet Gothic are all 40k.

The expansiveness of the range has pushed that even further in recent years; I like having Cultist in 40k even if they suck because it connects Necromunda; I like flyers in 40k even if they suck because it connects Aeronautica; I like Knights in 40k even if they suck because it connects Titanicus.

Immersion.

For me it's the miniatures, Kill Team and the (older) depiction of the setting. I only play 40K proper cuz my gaming group wouldn't be up for 100% skirmish level gaming.

Least interesting aspects for me are Tournament play, kiddie morning cartoon tier animations and pretty much most of the BS BL puts out.

+1 for the setting and art. Something about the way it was done was just so intriguing that I got immediately hooked when I was first exposed to 40k back during 4th edition.

#1 Minis - if GW didn't make great looking minis, I don't care how great the "lore" or game is, no buy.
#2 Lore - l love 40k & love Star Wars/Trek, but only buy 40k mini cuz the others look like gak.
#3 Game - if you have 1+2, then the game should "roughly" represent what they're supposed to be like and how they're supposed to act I'm down.
I thought I'd like X-Wing, played a demo and said nope. But loved the West End Games Star Wars RPG.
40K to me hits that sweet spot of all 3.

- Really like the asthetics and the idea of ad mech and fractured humanity.

- Evil space gods feeding of emotions spawning elemental demons.

- Fungus like aliens that grow into killing machines that "just wana go fasta" and strap jets to a shopping trolley which works because they believe it works

- Monastic space knight monks going around burning things wholesale because the universe is so crazy you just cant risk even the littlest infractions.

- The unlimited potential of what's possible.

- The concept of good v evil being a bit obscured and open to interpretation.

For me, in no particular order:
- The setting/lore. Everything is awful and I love it.
- The models. I rate about 90% of all new releases from the few years as being "Good to Excellent".
- Painting/modelling. There's something incredibly satisfying about clipping out those models, fitting them together, kitbashing them and painting them. I just don't get the same feel for 3D printed minis; it's somehow more satisfying for me to make models from a kit.
- Kicking back with mates and talking about the things that get us excited in the hobby. I love seeing what gets everyone else excited.
- Fighting battles that look awesome while still testing skill.
- Crusade. I've played 40+ games of Crusade and it is by far the most enjoyable experience I've had in the game.
