Because of the wacky state of the world this day, or perhaps because of dissatisfaction with the current iteration of the rules, I’m curious how many people have not moved on to 9th edition, but may still be using some form of 8th.

I must admit, I have not - and do not plan to - move to 9th edition, though I did pick up some of the latest necron models from the new starter/base kit, as well as some Admech cavalry.

It never ends well

I have not moved onto 9th. I generally prefer Apocalypse these days at home as well as some older editions (mostly 4th/5th), but I have kept my 8th edition rulebook and all of the Index books. 8th Ed. with just Indexes is still the easiest edition to teach others 40k, especially with the folding card rules sheets that came in so many 8th edition box sets. It's a solid edition version for a fun simple beer and pretzels game.

9th and its codexes with so many layers of rules, stratagems, secondary objectives, etc. seems much more focused on "tournament" style gamers. Sadly I see AOS 3.0 going that route as well with the leaks so far (I liked the relative simplicity of AOS 2.0).

I've moved on to 9th, but I still use Urban Conquest, many of the Theatres of War from the PA books, and obviously any 8th dexes that don't have 9th equivalents yet.

Some of the PA books, I expect, will have relevance for a fairly long time- Pariah's Inquisition Rules and Web of the Spider's SoS rules for example.

I suppose not exactly what you were looking for.

Generally 9e rules, with either 9e codex or 8e codex as appropriate.

In Lockdown

I've been playing since 4th, and after so many spins on the merry-go-round my group have decided to settle on 8th.

The main reason we're not stepping up to 9th is due to the expense of having to buy another set of codices. Some of us were very reluctant to move on from 7th, especially when Traitor Legions lasted maybe a month or so before the edition change (it was the new Death Guard range that convinced me to step up to 8th).

I've tried 9th missions, and there's just too much book keeping for a Saturday night game when you've all had a skinful.

Do you know what your sin is, Malcolm Reynolds?
Ah hell, I'm a fan of all seven.
But right now, I'm gonna have to go with wrath.

8th was terrible for melee armies so after a few games I just stopped playing it there was nothing you could do to make melee work, and I hate playing gunline.

9th making cover actually do something and the reduction in the impact of getting the first turn are massive improvements.

Good riddance 8th, I won't miss you.

Not really, though I really do miss CA2019's missions.

7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks do not think that purple makes them harder to see. They do think that camouflage does however, without knowing why.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.
Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers.
Orks do not have the power of believe.

No. As many problems 9th has, 8th was a much worse rule set. I would only play 8th ed games, if I was paid for it.

If you have to kill, then kill in the best manner. If you slaughter, then slaughter in the best manner. Let one of you sharpen his knife so his animal feels no pain.

Nope. For me, where 8th was good, 9th is better, and where 8th was bad, 9th is no worse.

While my contrarian nature leads me to be ambivalent about the power and popularity of the 9th Drukhari codex, the army was no fun at all at the end of 8th.

That's how I felt about 5th edition!

I like 8thmore than 9th as a casual player it's easier for my brain to know what's going on than 9th as I have not had enough games of 9th to get into the swing of things.
I do like the rule set for 9th well enough but everything after the main rules is a headache I'd rather not deal with.

I'd much rather play 4th or 8th more than 5th-7th and 9th at this point.

I know it's all about repetition and if I were able to play more 9th I might change my mind about it but as it stands there's a lot that just doesn't jive with me, especially secondary objectives.
I feel there should be a wat to make the optional for either player during a game so one player could use them but the other player, just playing the mission could still win by winning playing the mission.

We used to play something like that during 2nd, each player playing a different mission some times we kept those secret till the end. I'd really like something like that to work again.

Sigh, Yet another doomed attempt by man to bridge the gap between the material and spiritual worlds

Just for the fact that in 8th I had to bring 4-6 HQs and 6-9 troops for a regular game to make my army work I'm glad that edition is over and I'll never play it again. I'd rather give another chance to 7th .

Out of curiousity, what army was that for - Dark Eldar?

Tried 8th a fair amount of times but every game was dreadfully boring so I went back to 7th (which is still a joy to play.... if I can ever find people to play with). Almost all the issues I had with 8th have not been addressed in 9th so I don't see any reason to try and play it. But frankly 8th killed the hobby for me so the number of games I can play has been very few and far between.

Yes but with Kill Team which is still in 8th edition.

Casual gaming, mostly solo-coop these days.

Orks mostly, that's my main army. 6 HQs and 9 troops was the standard. Starting with 13-14 CPs was possible but somehow brave . And still meant 4 HQs and 6 troops.

Drukhari as well, they actually worked good with a single battallion and then 1-2 specialists detachments so I wasn't referring to them. Anyway I've sold the army so I'm not gonna worry about them anymore .

I also played SW and it was a pain to see SM armies of any flavour adding the loyal32 or 15 scouts just to have the basic amount of CPs to compete. SW couldn't even have scouts as troops.

Out of my Mind

Moved on to 9th for most of the mechanics. Avoiding 'Matched Play' until they get rid of it and replace it with something that is actually playable. Mostly using the Open War mission pack and having a great time with it. Playing around with the 7th ed. Missions to see how they perform with the new rules and the same problems with 9th still have an impact. Lethality of going first, Non-shooting Reserve units, etc. Working on a 'Maelstrom' mission setup, and it's going well enough but still got some bugs to work out pushing it into 9th.

A House rule that has worked fairly well for us preventing the use of an 'Army' rule against a Codex that hasn't been updated yet if they don't already have a rule. We won't use 'Protocols' or 'Doctrines' against a codex that doesn't have it yet. Of course, this only makes Pick-up games fun. Not much else to do while waiting for a Competitive mission pack.

Waiting for 40k to come back in the next edition.

Our group uses index 8th edition with halved ranges for movement/weapons for playing epic 40K and it works great.

Otherwise we still play our hybrid 5th edition because it is way better than 9th.
