Wishing I was back at the South Atlantic, closer to ice than the sun

So I finally got round to making and painting some of the terrain I've bought over the years. I have packs from TTCombat, Warcradle and Spartan Scenics (Yes I am old enough to have bought it when it first came out and no I never opened the box until now)

The problem is both the TT and WC accepted spray undercoat but the Spartan wont. Its as if there is a water repellent sealant across the board so any paint gathers in tiny 'snakes' of paint and wont stick unless I drown it in spray paint, and so lose the etched details.

Has anyone else encountered this problem with MDF/HDF? and how did you deal with it? I am reluctant to was the boards down with detergent as I'm worried that I'll soak the wood and so deform it.

Any advice?

Ta

Andrew

The only thing I can think of that might solve this problem is enamel paint, specifically Humbrol primer(01). If this doesn't work I'd speak to spartan and see what they suggest.

Some backwater sump

How about hitting them lightly with some fine grit sandpaper?

Debuff them with some fine grit sandpaper.

Not enough that you will remove detailing and etching, but just enough to cut into it to allow the paint to grab.

And then, USE a MATT ENAMEL spray paint to prime it (mdf and HDF will drink acrylic paint like water and swell up. You then have to sand them back and respray). Enamels will form a skin on the surface that will dry and give you a nice surface to add further paint to.

mdf need to be prepared to accept paint you need to paint it first with sometingh that sealt it. in the netherland we have a paint that stops the mdf from sucking up the paint, or you need more then one coat op paint 3 or 4

You can and should seal the mdf; a shellac based primer is generally best because the solvent is denatured alcohol and it sublimes off quickly. Shellac is also pretty neutral once dry and you can paint acrylics over the top. It’s reasonably priced here in the us in quart cans. It’s somewhat less reasonably priced but available in spray too; I don’t typically like spray cans because the propellant adds another variable.

Tried to sand, but I don't know if I've left the kit too long, it kind of furred, so going to try a plasterers trick of watered down PVA to see if that seals it to take paint.

But all the suggestions have been helpful.

Thanks

The water in the PVA will continue to raise the grain of your pressboard product. I’m not saying it won’t work. But you run the risk of swelling

I hadn't thought of that. I'll try it on one of the scraps first

I used kilz oil based primer on my mdf terrain then hit it with whatever color spray I needed after. Worked fine.
