I have always liked the little Cyclops mobile bomb and included it in my army quite often. But in 9th I am a bit puzzled how to use it as well as if it is useful at all.

First of all, it needs to be in engagement range to shoot. Isn't it only able to do so in the charge fase or when charged itself?

Second, it doesn't auto-hit anymore and is heavy. So even if it gets in engagement range will most likely hit on 5's.

As you can read I am a bit puzzled. Is it still a viable unit and how to use it?

Vehicles don’t suffer the penalty for moving and shooting Heavy weapons.

Only Infantry do.

Vehicles do suffer -1 to hit when they are in engagement range and shoot heavy weapons at the unit which they are in engagement range with.

BIG GUNS NEVER TIRE
A VEHICLE or MONSTER model can make attacks with ranged weapons even when its unit is within Engagement Range of enemy units, but it can only make such attacks against enemy units that it is within Engagement Range of. In such circumstances, VEHICLE and MONSTER models can target an enemy unit even if other friendly units are within Engagement Range of the same enemy unit. Note that if a VEHICLE or MONSTER unit has more than one ranged weapon, you can still choose to target units that are not within Engagement Range of the firing model’s unit, but they will only be able to make the attacks with that weapon if all enemy units within Engagement Range of the firing model’s unit have been destroyed when you come to resolve those attacks. In addition, when a VEHICLE or MONSTER model shoots a Heavy weapon, subtract 1 from the hit rolls when resolving that weapon’s attacks while any enemy units are within Engagement Range of that model’s unit.

Demolition Vehicle

The bearer can be selected to shoot with if it is within Engagement Range of any enemy units and can make attacks with its Cyclops demolition charge when doing so. When this unit is selected to shoot with its Cyclops demolition charge, you must target and resolve attacks against every other visible unit within range (friendly and enemy), even if those units are within Engagement range of models from a unit from the opposing side. After this unit shoots with its Cyclops demolition charge, it is destroyed. In addition, this model cannot control objective markers or perform actions.

You can embark the cyclops in a stormlord, and shoot from the inside, then you dont get the -1 to hit.

Thanks for letting us know!

I think the passage means it CAN shoot while in engagement range, not that it must be in engagement range. So it hab explode while >1" from enemies

Thanks for the link. That clarifies these messy rules. Funny the explosion is less effective when in engagement range.

Doesn't look like it is a unit worth its points, however, since it can now embark on a Valkyrie it would be funny to fly one smack in the middle of the enemy force and throw 4d6 at everything within 6".

I think (note that it's just an opinion) it's a unit whose worth depends a bit on luck and/or mistakes the enemy makes. If you can get it within range of multiple expensive units (preferably a bunch of characters) it can damage/kill a hilarious amount of points. Meanwhile this should only happen if either you make some pretty aweseome moves and the dice are friendly or your opponent misplays and lets a couple of models stay together without enough chaff to hold the cyclops back.

In this direction it can also be interesting to hide a cyclops in some ruins or something out of line of sight to discorage the enemy from getting to close.

That might be interesting indeed. But it still need LOS for the first target. And its movement is restricted by being a vehicle.

I don't think that would work since it can't shoot on the turn it disembarked. It looks pretty useless really, which is a shame since it's so cool. Seems more likely to move to legend than get any new rules anytime soon. Maybe if we all got together and wrote in we could get it faq'd? At least to remove the -1 to hit when in engagement range. Even if it had an ability to fire overwatch after the enemy made thier charge, that would be something. I'm gonna fire off an email to GW (as I always wanted to model a couple of these).

PS it would be cool to see your Death Rider blog but all the pics are missing.

O wait (I play way too much orks). It needs an open topped transport to shoot when embarked, darn. So this will only work with the Stormlord.

What I (on a purely theoretical basis, mind you) think of is putting it in the backline, not where you want to hold an objective but where you expect a deepstrike to happen. I assume it can discourage deepstrikers if they know they will be close to the charge, especially when it is in cover or can for some other reason not be removed easily

Yeah it's quite small and can be hidden easily so this could work. I would have to be super careful to get the size right so it's not 'modeling for advantage'. Looks about 1.5 times the size of an epic land raider.
