Wondering if any of you could recommend some solid novels on blood angels? I see they have an omnibus, but there’s also devastation of Baal which sounds good as well. Is there a particular order a guy should read them in?? Especially blood angels novels about the horus heresy?

Any advice would be great. Thanks!

Fear to Tread is the first blood angles novel in the Horus Heresy. Though the Blood Angels next big appearance is The Unremembered Empire which brings their story in with the ultramarines, dark angles, night lords, and a bit of the salamanders.

Word of warning on the blood angels omnibus books, they’re a bit dated at this point. A lot of the fluff put in there doesn’t really carry through. Also I wasn’t very impressed with James Swallow’s work but that’s just like my opinion man.

Fear to Tread is by far and away my favorite book for the angels.

The devastation of Baal, Dante, and darkness in the blood were all good reads and I enjoyed them.

I enjoyed the first blood angels omnibus too (the one about brother Rafen and his actual brother, though I can't remember the names of them)

Its an older novel, but Lemartes is actually a pretty fun read (though like Evil_Kiwi_60 had stated, it is dated and doesnt translate 100%

I’ve read one of the Mephiston books (third one?) and it was absolutely awful. I bought the complete Rafen omnibus recently but haven’t waded through it yet, it’s a bit of a doorstop so not very convenient for bringing on the commute to work!

Was not super impressed with the Rafen books when they came out.

The Mephiston books are ... weird. A whole lot of him off doing his own thing and not much interaction with the rest of the chapter. And I -like- Mephiston. I'd say they are definitely optional.

Devastation of Baal is great - big picture stuff, huge battles, all of the successor chapters gathering for the defense - it's amazing.

Dante is probably my favorite though. It's his origin story but it's paced well with a nice back and forth between the "now" of the 40k universe and the "then" of him becoming a marine and some of his experiences afterward.

I would avoid the Omnibus stuff by James Swallow unless you're interested in several hundred pages of Blood Angels fighting themselves because reasons, and wish to lose any and all respect for a few key characters. I hated that work so much I don't play them anymore.

I rarely have that strong a reaction to stuff like this, but there you have it.

Fear to Tread was pretty good though!

Edit: I just googled ablutions and apparently it does not including dropping a duece. I should have looked it up early sorry for any confusion. - Baldsmug

Wait, what were we talking about again? Did I ever tell you about the time I gave you five bees for a quarter? That's what you'd say in those days, "give me five bees for a quarter", is what you'd say in those days. And you'd go down to the D&D shop, with an onion in your belt, 'cause that was the style of the time. So there I was in the D&D shop..."

Swallow's works are a dumpster fire.

Avoid Swallow’s books at all costs. They were awful; the Blood Angels would have been wiped out of existence with the casual amounts of death he threw around in those books. Dante and Devastation of Baal by Guy Haley were solid.

Death that often came at their own hands no-less. To me, that entire series read like bad fan-fiction created by someone who actually hates the faction.

There was enough Blood Angel on Blood Angel violence to have wiped out a Space Marine Legion, let alone a chapter, in Swallow’s books…
