I’m starting a crusade and building a guard force to have fun with. Would a punisher with -1AP be worth taking or would a battle cannon or a second demolisher be better.? I feel it might be more fun to take a brrrrrrrrt then a boom but might not do a whole lot seeing though I might be up a lot of marines. There is at least 2 Murder elves forces and possibly some Crons.

Are we talking about a Tank commander?
Are you playing Vostroyans for that juicy +1 to hit strat?

A punisher isn't bad if you already have a demolisher, especially since it can't be messed with in combat. If it's a tank commander go full gun platform, if it isn't you could go nuts with triple flamers and just plop it somewhere where it'll make your opponent think twice about his charges/consolidations.

Yeah it’s a tank commander so hitting on 3’s. I play Cadian with the overlapping fields of fire and pound them to dust but can have my mind changed

The ap-1 punisher tank ace is definitely cool if you need some more anti-horde in your army, iv also considered going for mass 1 damage weapons as a way to help counter deathguard/drukharii, IE lots of punishers and heavy flamers on my tanks, only real problem is you lose out on the whole 2 full payload manticores or basilisks

If you're playing crusade a punisher tank commander with the crusade relic that gives exploding mortal wounds is brutal. With reroll 1's to hit and 40 shots you can do something like 6-7 mortal wounds in addition to your regular damage.

Cadian is an ok all-rounder but doesn't really bode that well with 9th, especially if you play with "proper" amounts of terrain but I'd assume it will still work well for a more casual enviroenment with cleaner tables.

As for Regiments, Catachans will work great for everything else in your army while Vostroyans with the +1 to hit stratagem will make the TC even sillier. If you're a new player remember that Movement will always be the most important phase in the game for every army, no matter the edition, which is why cadians aren't really that great once you get into the mechanics of the game.

So I've actually been running one of these in my lists. I often run an armor patrol detatchment that has Gunnery Experts and Spotter details, but that only allows two TCs. The Punisher with bolters and stubber doesn't need gunnery experts can can go in as an HQ slot for the main batallion which might have more infantry focused traits. The problem as others have mentioned you end up foregoing the ace trait on a manticore or demolisher.

On the other hand this tank, while not great against marines, does put out a lot of shots and seems to do perceptively better than the standard punisher. It also has the advantage that it can go into combat along side a tagged demolisher, try to hose off whatever ails it, and potentially allow the demolisher to get a round of shooting it might otherwise have been locked out of either by falling back or failing to kill whatever it is with it's bolter(s).

In a demolisher and artillery heavy list with less generall counter horde/infantry dakka, it may have a place and is worth a try at least once to see what it does for you. And if you do run into a horde, it will hurt the other guy noticeably
