Looking for advice on how to build my tyranids in 9th, just starting the army have had a few kits for a while but jsut finally getting the motivation to build and paint

I am an primary ork player with a 3d printer so can kitbash anything or modify/get more models. I know Tyranids will likely get a 9th edition codex hopefully soon but until then want to try the current bug codex out.

models I have (all unbuilt plastic and resin)

1 swarmlord
1 hive tyrant
1 prime (would come from warriors kit if making one)
2 dimacharon
18 warriors
50 termagaunts
40 hormagaunts
9 hive guard
6 zoenthrope
3 lichtor

You might want to check out the list section.

Because you mentioned the 3d printer... with old nid kits, you basically have double the amount of models.
When I first started I 3d printed bodies to have both Hive guard and tyrant guard, zoan and venoms, and swarmlord/tyrant

Looking at what you already collected, it's clear to me you already have a good idea of what to run with nids. You're just missing some Exos and some Rippers.

Swarm jumping Dimas is a fun feat to watch in game. Other then that bringing 6 zoan and 6 hiveguard every game is an easy way to start up most nid lists from what you have.

don't confuse things i bought with knowing much, literally just things picked up cheap new on sprue or unbuilt on ebay over the last few years. I read a lot of the tactics thread and watched every video i could find but there is so much contradiction.

should i make warriors some all guns some all melee? or should I mix and match there so they are generalists? the hiveguard look amazing looking at the data sheet, the plan depending on points was 1-3 units with LOS ignoring cannons x3

I will add exocrine to my ebay searches, as for rippers I have 5 with the termagaunts and will probably print some more. I found some neat models where instead of a few rippers its a literal swarm of them on a base, will be a good project to see what my sonic mini 4k can do. That and more bodies to make use of all of the weapons.

The standard approach these days is starting from a Kronos patrol with an Exocrine (for the stratagem and psy power), 6 hyve guard (for the double shooting stratagem) and a Neurothrope to provide the buff to the exocrine. You can put more exocrines for redundancy.

After that, you build into the FW monsters or into zoanthropes or even into a swarm.

Honestly I don't like this approach because:
a) If you care even a little bit about having an army that makes sense, mixing 2 hyve fleets is an abomination.
b) Having to paint in a different scheme the Kronos ones will bite you once the new dex will change the lists.

Agreed on not mixing factions for Tyranids being unfluffy and to me a no-no.

I already have my planned custom color scheme it will be a flat dark yellow as the base for skin with a flat army green airbrushed in for the transition up to the scales. scales will be a almost ultramarine blue with a blue-green transition paint claws and teeth will be black, eyes a bright red with glow effects. So i will likely run as a custom hive fleet rules type thing, I am not looking to build a tournament winning list or army just play bugs fairly effectively to not autolose in beer and pretzels games at the game store or my garage

That's pretty funny (not sarcasm) because you have a nice collection of the better by far tyranid units. Again you're really only missing the rippers for objectives and Exos for Marine murder.

As for loadout for Warriors, it's rough to advise because in the next few months it can completely go out the window. However at the moment Scything Talons and DS/VC are the way to go. Your warriors with Adaptive P. and the defensive strat make them obnoxiously tanky in shooting. They're still complete trash in melee though compared to newer units/rules and don't dish out anything of note with boneswords. With a prime they hit on 3s which makes DS/VC a decent amount of viable dakka.
Again though, their main purpose is to be stupidly tanky for their points.

Hive Guard are amazing. Don't let the online world fool you. My wife, who is the main tyranid player in the house, brings them every chance she can short of tournaments. They can and likely will delete 2 vehicles a turn, every turn.
The reason people don't tend to bring them on tournament lists and undersell them in general is the d3 damage and -2 AP. This makes removing marines a lot more difficult then what an Exo can do. I've never seen a unit delete my marines with such efficiency like an Exo. It's insane lol. Zoanthropes all have invul 3 and can zap annoying invul units quite well too.

Another flat out solid unit is the Malanthrope from FW. Or kitbash it with the Venom bits if you don't plan to 3d print spare bodies to double your kits. Put it with your backline and your tanky army is even more annoying to deal with.

So to recap:
Decked out Warriors = Annoyingly tanky. -1,-2 ap null and -1 damage
Hive Guard= Cant see on the table to deal with.
Zoanthropes= all invul 3
Exos = t8 and possible invul 5
Malan= Makes everything -1

Suddenly you're playing DG lol

It's a fun gun line against most armies in a typical store setting. Then you can change it up and have Dima/SL zipping across the field eating everything while Lictor/rippers get objectives. Another alternative (not as good as Dima) if you double up with 3d printing is build SL and a Flyrant. You can get lucky t1 charges that eat an important character if your opponent sets up poorly.

will do, looks liek i have lots of printing to do. I am debating on magnetizing vs just printing a gak ton of bodies and getting more boxes. I might also just straight print more warriors with weapons so I cna swap between em and mix em in the squads. also some of the custom stuff I have found is pretty cool so all will have custom heads and bits at least.

My theoretical list now is

swarmlord
prime with boneswords and death spitter

1 squad of 3 warrios with boneswords and spitters

2 squads of 3 warrios spitters and rending claws

2 squads of 9 warriors all spitters and swords

I will work in some cannons to above and maybe add a rippers

2 units of 3 hiveguard with impalers on all

1 lichtor
2 dimachaeron
1 exocrine (on the way should be here in a few days)

will throw in some zoanthropes and a malenthrope too later when tweeking and playing with just want to see how the first pass goes

If you are going heavy on Warriors Leviathan might be a good Hive Fleet. Don't worry too much about color because the Hive Mind might have chosen a seperate color set based on the target, or you might be a splinter fleet...?

Yea i will be playing with them all and try leviathan first then. seems the way to go. the custom hive fleet is liek the colors i want and that they can work as anything sort of like my "blue steel" space marines or "Guzbots mad orkz"

3d printing the combined parts isn't needed, but when we first started we started slowly so it was needed to play 2k games lol. Still though, having 6 hg and 6 tyrant Guard is nice. Same with SL/Tyrant to mix up HQs more

The other bigger creatures I'd magnetized

2 minor things:

Keep hiveguard in 1 unit (6) so they can all double shoot

Keep your warriors together so they all get the AP and strat to tank.

after some printing its now up to 28 warriors and 3 tyranid primes.

assembled 9 hive guard, 28 warriors, 20 termagauns, and swarmlord. hopign 2 dimacherons and zoanthropes this weekend and then if time permits base coating them to have a few models on the board.
