In case you missed new Kill Team stream, GW presenters said that Kill Team compatible troop boxes will have parts to indicate various specialists in the game. They shown new upgrade sprue for Krieg with stuff like prayer book + beads for zealot, mace for melee fighter, etc.

Of course, my first thought at seeing this was thinking to the two units Primaris would be using in Kill Team - Reivers and Infiltrators. Both have big problems, lack of any melee weapons among them being one of the first given both units want to walk up close. What would GW put on similar upgrade sprue? Why, melee weapons for all the CC specialists, of course. The thing is, giving the squad option to take one would be trivial years ago seeing they made all SM arms compatible so there was nothing stopping them from giving both units said option in the two SM codex books we had since... Unless said upgrade rules were held back for the time both units got KT upgrade sprues

Or take new CSM squad. Players complain it's missing weapons... Then GW turns up with upgrade sprue filling the gap, and maybe say 'pocket medic' parts for 'heretic not-apothecary candidate' that will greatly increase their competitiveness in 40K. Rinse and repeat for every troop unit with 'problems' GW failed to fix in the last few years because they were waiting for KT bits. Is that too cynical thinking or something GW would actually do?

I think this is a bit tinfoil hat; GW would totally try and sell you a sprue, and they'd totally make the stuff you can get on the upgrade sprue better than the stuff you had already, but I don't think they deliberately choked the rules for anything while planning to make OP Kill-Team sprues years later, that implies a degree of foresight and malice I don't think they have.

Yes, mostly because the side games like Kill Team and Warcry usually end up as a weird form of abandonware as soon as the boxes are out of the gates. Old KT and Warcry got erratic support with some rules even locked inside expensive box sets(Pariah) or divided between 5 books(Warcry) that weren't even available in digital form. As much as I am excited about the new Kill Team box contents I do fear the new KT will end up as just another abandonware on the GW shelf. Hell, they even said that the boxes would only stay around for a limited time.

In other words Warcry is following the lead set by Indomitus and carried on by Dominion in the lack of digital content (as I expect the new Kill Team to do as well).

I don't think you know what abandonware is.

Cheeky boy. I said "weird form" as we really don't have a word for "abandonware" for boardgames or this "release and leave it" form that Games Workshop tends to do to a lot of its side projects.

But hey, let's derail this thread because you are trying to be smart.

Yep, which is a shame as it limits accessibility to their content. I would be honestly surprised if this approach doesn't hurt GW in the long term. I know that in my FLGS the WarCry enthusiasts left the game for other games(like MCP) because they didn't want to follow GW's no digital approach.

The answer to the original question is NO!!! The designers are quite capable of screwing up the last two additions themselves. The problem with the two units is they are just designed poorly. As far as digitalizing rulebook GW just doesn't want to give up on the automatic profits. If GW can't get people to buy more figs they have to keep the books physical so they have a profit stream. If they were smart digitalize the rule books and just keep making more models to sell.
