Hey Dakka!

I probably haven't been on this forum for about 7 years or so and it is exciting to be back. I've already spent many hours catching up on old blogs I previously followed: fantastic to see some still going.

With my city currently returning to lockdown, the lit the fire under me to return to this hobby that was very dear to me. This time around I wanted to achieve and pursue all the things I didn't years: For one I want to develop my painting and complete an army to a decent standard and that'll be my priority.

Secondly, Gaunt's Ghosts and the Tanith First and Only were fascinating to me years ago but I didn't have the budget or willpower to take steps towards that; coincidently when I walked into my local Games Workshop they'd just released the latest Gaunt's Ghosts model. With them I bought a few necessities to get started though after looking further online I'll still need to order a few more paints and brushes including some Contrast paints which didn't exist last time. I don't believe the Contrast paints are a necessity but they seem interesting and may be helpful to developing my painting skills.

With the Ghosts in mind, I'd like to be able to get through Dan Abbnett's series on said characters and gleam some inspiration for building this army.

Thirdly, I wanted to keep an updated blog on this journey: Over the years I would love following different P&M blogs on this site and it is something I never felt I could do (lack of money, lack of dedication, too scattered in my interests, etc) so this time I want to be what I looked up to as a young wargamer.

With that, I should at least show what I've been working on:

I know it's not much currently. I'd placed orders at various sites to continue to grow this army including miniatures from Victoria Miniatures to fill out the rank-and-file of the force.

Any advice and tips on how to proceed is certainly appreciated.

Sorry, first post meant I couldn't utilise links. Any tips of how to reduce the resolution on images posted?

Should be cool to see peoples take on these new minis...
I suspect that replicating the branches on the bases are going to be difficult

Progress update!

Border Ranger miniatures from Victoria Miniatures arrived and in addition paints from Games Workshop.

In total I received 20 guardsmen to begin forming the ranks of the Tanith First & Only but I've only assembled the first section to see how they progress. Similar to Gaunt's Ghosts I've only partially assembled the troopers for ease of painting.

Previously in the hobby I wasn't much into the painting, let alone skilled at it, so I'm just taking the plunge! Looking to get some colour across the whole force before doing any highlighting (something I never really tried in the past, only shading and drybrushing). I've been looking to some guides for the colour scheme but also trying to take some of my own liberties.

Here's an outline of the progress.

1. Camouflage cloaks: base of Death World Forest, layer of Militarum Green contrast.
2. Pants, boots, and some weapon bodies: Base of Ultramarine Blue contrast, layer of Black Templar contrast (derived this from an guide though it didn't really have the effect I thought it would).
3. Skin: base of Flayed One Flesh (goodness, this required layers and layers), layer of Guilliman Flesh contrast (Only just started on this step. Completed a test piece to see if I'd like the result).

As I've gotten to painting the skin tones I've opted to try using a homemade wet palette and I've not sure if that's why the base has required so many coats or if that's down to such a light paint on a grey undercoat.

Any feedback or criticism is certainly appreciated!

Shaping up nicely! Always good to see more Ghosts. The new set is awesome. And the minis from Victoria work really well.

May I ask, what do you use the pink sticks for? (Don't lnow the english word for it)

Currently to get paints from the Citadel paint pot into the wet palette, nothing exciting. I’ve ordered some dropper bottles so eventually I’ll be able to put the paints directly onto the palette.

Great progress on the Ghosts so far. Have you noticed any of the pieces or bit as being brittle so far? I plan on putting mine together next month.

Do you mean specifically with the resin miniatures? I've noticed the rifles are quite prone to breaking, particularly the slings.

Hey folks! Apologies if I'm slow to update.

I'm not a fast painter it seems hahaha. I've completed the skin for the 6 Ghosts and 10 guardsmen.

In the meantime, I've collected a Catachan command squad and heavy weapons team and will ordering enough parts from Victoria Lamb to be able create 6 heavy weapons teams, a platoon command squad and another rifleman squad.

In total, I'm approximately looking at having the following force:

-Gaunt's Ghosts

-Infantry platoon:
1 Command squad
3 x Rifleman squads (each with meltagun and auto-cannon)
1 x Mortar squad

While I'm not sure if competitively or even lore-wise that assortment of weapons is ideal; I like to try and draw from other media or even real life composition so a machine gun in each section would be appropriate. Additionally I rewatched Band of Brothers and the Pacific to the idea of a mortar section was appealing.

Slow but steady. Looking good there. Sounds like a fun small force.

I'm still waiting on some materials to continue painting but in the meantime I've had some fun assembling more troops.

Using Catachan and Victoria Lamb miniatures to kit bash a sniper, Vox-caster and a mortar team. I'm particularly proud of the mortar team; to get the cloaks flowing onto the ground I dipped the cloak into boiling water so that I could be them into shape!

Just a small update.

I've assembled the rest of the mortar team and a few members of a company command section.

A friend and myself have organised to play a few small 500 point games once lockdown ends as we grow our forces so I'll likely be looking to run a platoon or two with Major Rawne acting as company commander.

To follow the rule of WYSIWYG I've given Rawne a laspistol since the stock miniature bears a lasrifle.

My little hand drill has arrived and most of the miniatures have been pinned to their bases and I've resumed painting (I was waiting to pin them since my hands were rubbing off paint as I handled them).

In the next few days the rest of the platoon shall arrive and I hope to charge ahead and get most of what I have painted before then.

Wow mate, these guys are off to a great start! I always love themed guard regiments, and the mix of Victoria bits with GW stuff really makes for a seamless fit with the Gaunt's Ghosts minis.

Colours looking nice and muted so far, and those bent capes are a brilliant idea!

Glad to hear these guys will (hopefully) get on the table soon. I haven't gotten nearly as much painted as I thought I would this lockdown! Heaps of motivation when there's no time, and then when there is...bah!

Good luck with powering through them, and for the games. I really enjoy the 500-1000 pt mark in 9th, I find the full 2k to be a bit tedious in the first few rounds moving everything around and remembering all your rules and then deflating in the last few when 80% of your army is gone and you've finally figured out where you should have moved that guard squad to on T1 to score more points!

Thanks for sharing and keep us posted
