Title says it all. I know I'm going to get super flamed for this but, whatever. As you can see from my account activation date, I've been here a long time. Walked away from 40K because the fan base was pretty awful. (Not including 4chan, as its obviously full of degenerates. Though I happened across a 4chan thread today which prompted this question.)

Backstory, I had been playing 40K at least once a week since 1998 until late 2017 - early 2018ish. There were a few weeks here and there where I would miss but I've played solidly from late 2nd through 8th. Through all the ups and down of rules. Still have my metal sisters army I bought in 2000 and my metal Eldar from the time. Played in Ireland and across the entire united states before I finally settled in the southwest.

Anyway, I walked away from the local scene, 3 stores across the town with okay sized player bases. Around 30 players across the spaces fairly consistently. Anyway, I got tired of people talking openly about wishing for genocides, R words while deployed, bragging about it, constant N word usage. Didn't used to be that bad but, SOMETHING happened and it made it all a lot worse. Tried moving game stores, tried reporting them to the owners but nothing was done. Eventually I gave up the hobby because I was tired of listening to fantasies about what a heavy bolter would do to a BLM protestor's head. (Gave up my active shooting range usage for a similar reason.) I tried to only play with people that DIDN'T say those things, but I decided that I was out of breath and that playing near them was agreeing to them, no matter how many times I told them to go F themselves.

Anyway, this will vary by region, but, has anyone else had this experience? Has anything changed? Gotten better or worse? I welcome your hate mail.

"Suffering is Faith, Faith is Strength.

Generations have suffered with the same devotion that we can offer but once. Still, our Faith leads us through these dark times like a beacon. It will guide us to triumph over these abominations. Either by breaking them upon us like waves against a limitless, golden peak or by thrusting through them like the spear of the Immortal Emperor Himself." - Cannoness Aoife, Order of the desert rose #Yesallwomen

Ummm, yeah I have never, ever, experienced an interaction anywhere near this at all. I don't want to be mean here, but I think this may be a local community issue.

I've never seen any of this kind of thing outside of 4chan. I hope those places have changed for you, but it's hard to tell without us going to your stores to see for you.

Already, members of our growing cult are using the grace of the Omnissiah – the true Omnissiah, not Terra’s false prophet – to harness the might of the warp. Geller fields, warp missiles, void shields, all these things you are familiar with. But their underlying principles can be turned to so much more. In my 20ish years exposure to the game, the only time I even came close to something in that general direction, was when back in 1999 a regular customer at the local game store had an Ork army with some characters converted to have SS symbols.

But there was never any political talk and he seemed like a normal dude who just wanted some fun.

Nowadays my local club is just a bunch of geeks with too much disposable income who want to spend their Sunday afternoons together nerding about the game.

Never seen anything like that around my local gaming stores. The managers around here don't even like it if you let basic profanity slip, much less anything racial.

I'v never even seen anything like you just wrote about.. like ever. Especially in the game stores, everyone is super polite, that's 20yrs worth.

Once about 15yrs ago someone had bought a fully painted space marine army where all the shoulder logos were nazi swastickers. It was a really unfortunate purchase, they were painted nicely, even the logo's were done nice. He was looking for his first game, I had to decline and I told him why and we talked for quite a while about what he could do, since I didn't think he'd get any games in otherwise. A week later, he shows up with his army and he had converted all those logo's to the windows icon. We had a great first teaching game that day.

Every region is different, sounds like yours was the most extreme kind. And I am sorry for that.

Windows Icon space marines sound amazing to fight, and I'm glad you talked to him.

Gone to a handful of stores in California and the southwestern US, nothing so far. Can't speak for anywhere else, but given the responses here, it seems like a rare thing.

I'm in America. Not only that, I'm in Florida. I often go to hobby stores with my friends, and they host tournaments, and I've never seen anything like that. I could be lucky, but who knows?

Two years is a very short time for apparent societal problems to change.

I will say this, due to how the Imperium is presented as the focal point of the setting you have these guys drawn to 40K that think the Imperium is alive because of its fascism and not despite it. People who still have the revisionist opinion that Nazi Germany was somehow successful in restoring order after the economy crisis. They don't necessarily advocate for the Holocaust or even wars, but they think in dire circumstances like 40K shows us, you need a strong authoritarian government. With how Space Marines are more and more presented as heroic saviours of humanity they even have a basis in the fluff to draw from. These people didn't leave in the last two years (why would they?), but they might have hidden in their homes like we all did because of Corona .

To be fair, the Imperium being total fascists / human supremacists towards other _actual_ races is at least grounded in some reality.

Orkz, Chaos, Tyranids and the likes can't be reasoned with and will always be an existential threat.

But yeah, the people you are talking about probs don't understand the difference to real life.

Sounds like a local issue for sure. The people I meet are generally nice. Found more of the type you're describing in old-school TSR D&D groups (an era I like, but a lot of that is because of nostalgia).

This sort of thing is just one of the million reasons I never play with randos. I wouldn't even mind the facism so much, but if they think there is something inherently "great" about the IoM, they have misunderstood the 40K setting so badly that I just cant be bothered to play against such a person

IoM is like, the WORST faction

Yeah, unfortunately the worlds full of holes & worse. And some of them also play minis games like us normal folks....
That's why it's important to make actual friends with like minded people - so that you can enjoy a private get together with 6 or 7 buddies, NOT at the local shop, & wage 15mm-30mm war in peace.

You walked away from you local scene since you experienced toxic behaviour from some people.
Now that I get.
But then you say you walked away from the entire hobby, branding everyone who plays, paint, read, or in any form enjoy and partake in it as a white supremacist?
Grow up!

If any of this is true, why would you think this has anything to do with 40k? If you gave them star wars legion, something tells me they would be saying exactly the same sort of things.
Like every other poster said, none of us have come across anything remotely near this sort of thing... It seems like that is the norm in every civilised area of society across the world...

Seems there is a particular political narrative undertone to what they are saying... Maybe that's why he is pre-emptively saying he will get flamed..
I wonder if OP thinks violent looters and rioters are protesters...

"I walked away from 40k 2 years ago..." Then asking people from around the world on a forum if the white nationalism had gotten better.

Had he said that he walked away from the game due to local morons making a toxic environment, then I would have supported him fully. He instead made it about the entire hobby.

Maybe you should re-read OPs post...
I know its tempting for people to immediatly jump on the "40k bad coz white supremacy" train but cmon..
Is the bar set so low?

That's not true.
I've come across a fair # of these types, & more in recent years than before. The very worst (or at least most vocal) was a guy about 10 years ago who'd thoroughly bought into the idea all Muslims are the enemy & had recently returned from too many deployments to Iraq/Afghanistan. He got himself banned from the local shops in short order.
Fortunately that's what happens to most of these types around here - because they're bad for business.

Any type of 'gaming' community tends to bring out your dubious neckbeards and miniature wargaming in particular tends to appeal to the 'gravy seal' military larper guys. Both of these groups have a predisposition towards racism, especially towards islamic groups (at least in the US.).

The attitude isn't particularly rare (especially in more Red areas) but there's a natural pressure to keep your politics to yourself when gaming. There are several people in our local area I've had to unfriend on facebook so I don't see the anti-vaxxer/racist/sexist/etc content they post to their personal feed; who manage to leave that gak at home when tournaments roll around.

Except they didn't. Their entire play area was full of toxic somethings. So they stopped playing.

Now they want to know if those toxic somethings have reduced in number or gone into hiding. It's not a personal attack.
