Think about it. Squats are/were supposedly 'Allies of the Tau' but mysteriously were eaten by an 'unnamed hive fleet'. Where were the Tau when this happened? Some allies huh?
One could seriously ask what could the Tau actually offer the Squat as an ally?
But really....there's just a fundamental conflict in the official 'story'. Tau don't really ally. They absorb you under their totalitarian caste run space-state socialist republic as a vassal state.
The only logical conclusion is that the Tau must have done an inside job/cover up. The reality must be that the squats are being held as a gulag slave race by those filthy space stalinists, who use them to slavishly produce and output tech and then propagandise it as Tau achievements.

The Squats were part of the Imperium not allies of the Tau.
The Demiurge were a more recent reimagining of the Space Dwarf concept and they *are* allies of the Tau, but they’re also still around.

If the imperium lost the Squats to the Tau, would they admit it?
"Allies" of the Tau.
In which instance are Tau allies not a vassal state?
Think about it....they've been brutalised by the Tau with a thin cover story

If the imperium, who are capable of exterminatus-ing entire planets, lost the squats to the t'au, what do you suppose they would do to the squats?
Methinks "unknown hive-fleet" was probably remarkably similar to a large, gothic space fleet.

The Squat Homeworlds were near the Galactic Core, deep within Ultima Segmentum close to the Maelstrom. They're really far away from the Eastern Fringe where the T'au Empire is situated but are roughly where a number of Hive Fleet tendrils appear.
No, the T'au didn't kill the Squats.
Fun Fact: Some Squats might still be alive as during the Psychic Awakening an Imperial ship became trapped in a Squat gravity weapon near the Homeworlds.

Oh... this again.
I suggest you read the IRL history of the Squats on Lexicanum, there you will see the "Tyranids ate them" was written as a joke in a letters page, which everyone for whatever reason ran with and Chinese whispers turned it into "truth".
Also, the Demiurg are allied with the Tau, not the Squats. The two are distinct species.

This is a hilarious crackpot theory and I love it. The problems are too many as others will point out, but the concept is also damn funny. Certainly bold and original. Thanks for a good laugh!
I hope this shows up as a conspiracy theory in TTS.

Squats are still around, there's several on Necromunda. Automatically Appended Next Post: As for Tau and allies, you can argue that vassal states are allies. It's also true that Tau initially create alliances or deals, building rapport until one day totally subsuming whoever it was.
This is preferred to a direct military response, unless speed is required or diplomacy doesn't work.

How doesn't it add up though?
The T'au are less advanced than the Imperium is and it's only due to their culture and aesthetic that it seems they are a more advanced civilisation. Railguns, guided missiles, and drones are all concepts that modern humans have a very good grasp on. The Imperium has Battlesuits, hover vehicles, and "laser" weapons of its own as well.
The T'au worlds are the other side of Ultima Segmentum to the Squat Homeworlds as has been pointed out so the Squats haven't been annexed. There are still Squats kicking about in small groups throughout the Imperium as well, not exactly something that would be allowed if the whole race had joined the T'au.
And the biggest point you're missing is that the Squats were a part of the Imperium, not the T'au Empire. If they were destroyed by the Tyranids then it's nothing exceptional because it happens all the time.

I won't lie, I'm getting the impression that there's a pretty strong bias against the Tau here, in spite of all evidence saying that they were never involved with the Squats in the first place, and how the Squats aren't even gone.

The Squats are not part of the Imperium anyway, their Homeworlds are independent.
But the Demiurg (which are a cooler concept anyway) are allied with the Tau and do provide them with weaponry. Demiurg only really came up in Battlefleet Gothic where they had huge mining ships. Tau had a few extra auxiliaries in BFG that never made it into 40K.
I prefer the Demiurg as a distinct Xenos species. I think short muscley humans from high gravity worlds are fine, but they're still humans as far as I'm concerned.

That's what they want you to think. But really it was the Zoats who were the allies of the Tau! After the Tau found out that they were a harbinger species for the Tyranids, they had to be wiped out for the Greater Good (the greater good).

Zoat's still exist too. Though they're presented as full independent from both the Tau and the Tyranids.

I'm still baffled that every time I see a Squat speculation thread, barely anyone considers the idea that the Imperium terminated them in secrecy.
I wrote this down a year ago in some other thread, but this is what I always theorize.
The concept of the Squat Empire is one that the Imperium would despise to their core. Squats are a functional society of Abhumans, with a progressive look on technology and high Psychic potential. They are also a stubborn people that strongly believes in independence and self sufficiency. In fact, according to the second edition IG codex, the Squats would secede from the Imperium during the Age of Apostasy.
The Mechanicus wouldn't like them because Squats have better technology without the religious Dogma.
The Ecclesiarchy would hate them because they are Abhumans that disprove the human-supremacist ideology they preach. They also revere ancestor spirits, not the Emperor.
The Imperium took out their empire. Probably conquering and quarantining worlds untill the Squats were beaten down and seperated. Their technology was handed to the Mechanicus, and any evidence of Squat involvement in their creation was scrubbed away.
To cover this all up, the ruling bodies of the Imperium made up the tale that the Squats went extinct due to a massive xenos invasion of their homeworlds.
And now, with the Galaxy split asunder and the Imperium spread thinner than ever, hidden Squat remnants are starting to rise up.
I find this theory more logical and way more interesting than "Tyranids took a massive detour and consumed their homeworlds". It would also allow for a way more interesting narrative if the Squats would ever regain their status as a playable army. A non-Xenos, non-Chaos rebel faction that might even be a proper analogue for "good-guys".

Actually, due to the nature of Hive Fleet Leviathan's invasion of the Milky Way, there wouldn't be any "detour". If you take a look at the galaxy map regarding Hive Fleet tendrils there is one that basically heads straight to the Galactic Core where the Squat Homeworlds are located. Even if it wasn't Leviathan it could have been a probing tendril testing the strategy of attacking from below the galactic plane.
Even if the Tyranid theory was based on a joke, there's plenty of ways it could actually take place.

I think a few Zoats have popped up a few times between M36 and M42. Although I don't recall what the current Zoat lore is though, are they still bioconstructs part of the Tyranid Ecosystem or just Tyranid allies? I took a look at Lexicanum and the article is a bit disjointed.
I am enjoying the Squat / Tau / Imperium conspiracy theories in this thread. Thank you for sharing.

Its disjointed because Zoats have naff all written about them, like Squats. Early 40k concepts that didn't make the cut for later editions so they're left to rot.

It's not a joke. It was put in the foreword of the reprinted novel "Inquisitor" by Ian Watson. The Squat character in the novel played an integral role to the plot so could not be removed easily so it was an attempt by GW to explain the absence of Squats in the wider universe.
Of course, whether that given reason is "true" within the 40K universe or just misinformation is up to you. However there was a hint dropped that maybe the Squats are not extinct after all, in Pariah, p. 37. Of course it could just be again GW playing coy and hedging their bets basically.

The original suggestion of it, from games workshop, was intended as a joke. It was then turned into something that was the actual explanation for them.

The squat home worlds were destroyed so GW had a story driven reason not the make the army any more. Although I think the story came after
Are the demiurg a totally different species or different group of what the imperium call squats.
Either way there are loads of squats in imperial space just their home worlds got destroyed.

The Demiurg were created by Andy Chambers and first introduced in BFG. They were basically a different take on the whole Dwarf/Squat theme without them being Squats (i.e. they are slow but sturdy and they are miners). AFAIK no Demiurg has been portrayed in GW art so their true appearance is unknown.
