How do!

So I struggled with the title here somewhat, as I just can’t think how to get the topic across in just a few words. Apologies if it feels misleading.

What I want to talk about is my dream for a Necromunda Campaign. Rather than just being loosely narrative, I want to create a proper world for the Gangs to inhabit. Somewhere that actions have consequences, and locations feel real and established.

Let’s start with a settlement, where the trading post would be located. This is the start of rooting the campaign in some form of reality. The trading post, and other locales would have a fixed layout, at least to begin with. Pre-designed boards, with set features. So the gun store would always be in the same place, as would the other shops and facilities. This I feel would bring a real sense of permanence to the campaign. And should games end up being played within its confines, part of the fun would be how well each player has “explored” the area in times before, rather than a relatively random setup of terrain.

Likewise, for hired guns I think I’d want them to be a limited and recognisable resource. Perhaps there are only a couple of Bounty Hunters, and only one each of Guilder Delegations (though that might depend how established I decide the settlement is. I could add more as the campaign and campaign seasons continue on if I decide it’s a new endeavour. Same with the shops and that now I think about it).

Hive Scum? I think I’d be a bit more liberal there. Certainly if there’s to be a fixed number, it’d be greater than the more professional Bounty Hunters. The same for Ammo Jacks, Sloppers and other hangers on. Keep it limited. Make it feel like a real community, which tend to have limited specialists.

I could extend the fixed areas to points of interest. Perhaps higher value territories will be instantly recognisable, leaving more random setups to other engagements.

The aim of course is to create a tangible area of the Underhive for my players to revisit time and time again. Perhaps even home brew rules for them to fortify locations, at a cost in resources, rather than up gun their dudes.

What are your thoughts on this concept? How might you develop such a campaign environment?

Are you talking about classic or new necromunda? If it's about old school Necromunda you could check out Yaktribe. It's another online forum with an impressive Necro community.

It has a vault with all sorts of interesting files regarding new gangs, rules, settings,... You should take a look there, boatloads of worldbuilding inspiration there.

If you want a more free feel to it check out the Ash Waste Nomads ruleset. It's a standalone ruleset for gangwar outside of the hives. Neat rules for vehicles and lone independent settlements to be found there.

If you are playing new necromunda, I know nothing about that. But it might be worth checking out, if only for inspiration.

As for hired guns, you, as a GM could create premade named hirelings with their own little backgrounds.

Just my two cents but I hope it helps.

Would be Newcromunda, but possibly with the Territory rules from the original, as I really, really like those!

And yeah, any hired guns or hangers on would be named characters, apart from stuff like Gang Lookouts (though I think I’d be up for allowing peeps to bribe them).

Basically anything which brings a sense of permanence and that I’m up for.

Will delve into yaktribe soon I think,

Don't get lost there

Now I'm sitting here, wanting to start up old school necro again. Sweet, sweet memories!

On an Express Elevator to Hell!!

Yes was going to say Yaktribe will probably have a lot of stuff there.

I had some plans for a Necro campaign that sadly got forestalled by Covid, but a couple of ideas below. Like you we were going to use a hybrid model of old and new versions; use the NCE for all of the pre and post-game stuff (scenarios, gang ratings, injury table) and NC18 for the actual games themselves. The key reason for that is that the balancing mechanism for the original was so superior, so it's a good way of stopping people from losing interest in the campaign if they get hammered a few times. There were a couple of minor alterations to the rules; using the WHFB hit chart for melee, original high-impact and exploding weapon rules, plus allow people to fire into melee. I'll try and find the link to get more details..

That sounds like a really great idea for the permanent campaign. One idea I had had, but hadn't implemented, was to use Wix.com to make a really basic website (it's super easy to use and free) where you could use as a Hive Times blog, which featured a map and battle write-ups from games people had played. So you could track the campaign, everyone can access it easily etc. There would be a 'now hiring' board where you (if you are GM for the campaign) can drip-feed in hired guns and scum and make them available to buy - it's also a way then of helping out gangs that are struggling after the first few games. You can post amusing stories about the demise of gangers, or warnings about what might be coming (one scenario I had was of headless corpses being found for a while, leading to a fun 'Predator' style all-against-the-monster game you can put on to help break up the campaign).

Sounds like a really great idea though, look forward to reading what you come up with and hopefully stealing some ideas !
