Hello.

Im looking to painting some shadow specters from FW.
Being a stickler for such things, I aim to paint all my aspects as mandated by the official paint jobs.

So I found this recipe from FW:

Also please see image on FW

https://www.forgeworld.co.uk/en-GB/Shadow-Spectres-Aspect-Warrior-Squad

The thing is Thrakka Green, and Asurmen blue are both washes as far as I can tell
So Do I just water these down slightly or should I invest in a medium??

So my question is, do I apply a normal wash of thrakka green all over first and then glaze with Asurmen blue over the top to get the hue.
Or is the intention to apply thrakka green as glaze (how thick is the glaze supposed to be?)

I don't have much experience with painting using exclusively glazes as a method.
Im a bit confused by this recipe.

Also, the spectres are currently sprayed greyseer.
I think I will need to base them white first or spray them white ?

Glazes are a quick and simple way to paint miniatures and I highly suggest watching some videos on youtube about them.

In essence, they function like contrast paints. You throw a layer of white of some sort down and then paint over them. Not unlike painting with inks too.

In this case, if you look at other examples of work done with Thraka green you'll notice all of the photos are a deep emerald green as opposed to the spectres on forge worlds website. This indicates that these colors were mixed to the artists particular whim when they were painted.

If you're bent on matching those paint jobs exactly, I suggest testing different mixes of the three components until you find a suitable color to use. I tend to use old pieces of plastic or junk sprues for this task.

Once you've found (and written down) your mix, you can proceed by simply covering the model, being cautious to not let any pool on the model.

Here's a GW video thinning a contrast paint to a glaze which should give you an idea of the consistency of that the glaze needs to be:

Glazes can be made with water only, but this will affect the finish as water can dilute the matte/gloss medium in the paint. Alternatives would be using acrylic medium of your choice.

It's not a huge difference but something to keep in mind.

There’s a good video on YouTube about layers, glazed and filters, I think it’s on the hobby cheating channel

So you think in the recipe they mean that it was a mix of thraka green, asurmen blue and varnish - rather than applying these in their individual layers?

Thats kind of what I wana make sure im reading right.

FWIW, Army Painter's Blue Tone and Green Tone are dead matches for Asurmen Blue and Thraka Green, both in color and physical properties.

Mix equal parts blue, green, and gloss varnish and apply thinly over white, and I expect you'll get comparable results to those studio models.

Yeah its definitely a mix. You can probably do it with water instead of medium but eh, who's counting.

I don't understand what the purpose of using the varnish is?

They don't look particularly shiny.
