So I’m not sure if this is the right place or if it belongs in “Army Lists”, but I will post in both and delete the one that doesn’t belong.

So I’m back to warhammer 40k recently... played 2 games as marines and won against Necrons and then against Necrons/Custodes 2v2. However, since they came out I’ve loved the models for the sisters of silence and if I’m going to be investing a pile of money, I’d like to paint what I like the look and lore of. From what I can see... the only way I can play sisters of silence is to proxy them as sisters of battle or use them as a vanguard detach for Custodes. I like the look and rules of the Custode termies, and the forgeworld world humpback unit... not a huge fan of the troop choices, but it is what it is.

I guess my question is... how do I play sisters of silence competitively?... now by this I mean in the flavour sense... I have a feeling that by using this army I will be losing some competitive edge and I can’t find any reference to people using them in 9th, so they must not be that great.... at first i thought it would be a great source for cheap bodies in a custode army, but the sisters don’t have obsec... so not sure what to say on their purpose.

Would love to hear some thoughts on how I could use these models I love so much.

Thanks in advance!

According to Battlescribe at least: you can also include them in a normal custodes list as an elite slot.

Odd are pretty good that when the Custodes get a new codex for 9th they will feature more prominently, but for now I'm afraid that's the best you are going to get :-(

What role would you be fielding them for and how would you use them?
They are def usable in Custodes as per their rule, but I’d like to know how I can justify them as units.

Any idea when they might get a 9th codex for Custodes out?

Thanks

SoS units exist to make Thousand Sons players upset, basically. It's an extremely specific counter that is only going to feel good to run against an army with a lot of psykers.

I guess the one argument you could make is SoS as cheap backline objective holders, since the are significantly less expensive in points than Custodes troops. Won't have ObSec though, for however much you care about that.

Edit: All right looking at this more seriously if you actually want to push SoS as a core part of your army they've got stratagems you can feed them to make it more appealing. You can support a unit of Vigilators with Creeping Dread, Talons, and Decapitating Strikes to make them a genuine threat even to non-psyker armies. I doubt this balances well against just using that CP on your Custodes but if you're looking for justifications there it is.

I don't know, for 165 points you can get a unit of five witchseekers (the SoS with flamers) and a rhino to transport them. With the new range 12'' flamers that's a turn 2 hit with 5d6 Str4 attacks, unless someone focus fires them to death before them. That's not amazing, but it is def a threat that needs to be addressed (especially against something horde style).

Considering that pretty much everything in a custodes list would be harder to kill, there is a good chance that your opponent will target them first, which saves your harder hitting troops from dying early.

Again, it's not much, but it's not nothing either. I could see running two of those set ups, charging in at two different spaces and blocking things up a bit while the rest of my army focuses fire where it needs to be.

Make no mistake: They will DIE, but they might just take a chunk off your opponent in the process, and definitely will require a bit of firepower directed their way regardless.

Again: it's not great, but it's certainly not nothing.

Having played more games than me, do you not think obsec is very important to have in 9th?
Looking at the stratagems you listed, Vigilators do look like they have some potential in close combat to shred equal point cost opponents. Along with the flamers in a rhino tactic... maybe there is hope. Ultimately I like the idea of a 12 point per model bolt gun SoS units sitting on an objective in the back while my termies and Venatari do work... 17/18 points for vigilators and witch-flamers is looking on the expensive side.

*shrug

ObSec is extremely important; I'm a Necrons player first and foremost and we happily give up a lot of damage potential to put ObSec on all of our units. This is mostly applicable for contesting the middle of the board, though, you can largely get away with not having it on your backline objective holders. If the enemy has troops in your deployment zone whatever was holding that objective is probably already dead.

So in all reality, it would be reasonable to use my cheap SoS units to hold back board objectives at 12 points a model for point efficiency and flavour... maybe a unit of flamers or vigilators to smash in with enemy psychics up front in a Rhino (again for flavour and my love of the models) and then fill the rest with Custodes, all of which have Obsec to push the mid board anyway .... and maybe a Telemon. From what I can see almost every custode has Obsec, even the Venatari Jumppack squads for mid objective pushing and enemy deployment zone objectives....

Thoughts?
