Moving this concept to a new thread, as I'm pretty happy with markerlights now – just Seeker weapons I'm torn on.

Both are meant to reward landing more than the 3 markerlights you'll usually need to get full re-rolls for most Tau units; the first version scales slowly, but just slightly better than Seeker missiles do now, going from 6+ at 0 markerlights to 5+ (re-roll 1s) to 4+ (re-roll 1-2s) to 3+ (re-roll 1-2s) to 2+ (re-roll 1s) at 4 markerlights. It does devalue the Sky Ray's BS3+, but there are ways around that; giving it a +1 to hit for Seekers, for example.

The second version is much faster, going straight to normal BS for 1 markerlight... but it requires you to "spend" that markerlight, penalising the shooting for the rest of your army unless you've got a surplus of markerlight counters. It also can't reach 2+ re-roll 1s on its own.

Markerlight
A Hunter Cadre's firepower is guided by markerlight technology, which scans potential quarry with projected holo-beams. Within moments, targeting patterns and optimal aiming vectors are uploaded to the local combat network, enabling a fusillade of withering precision.
Weapons with the Markerlight ability cannot be fired except in the Marker step of your Shooting phase, as described below. Each time a Markerlight weapon scores a hit, the target gains 1 markerlight counter and the attack sequence ends. All markerlight counters are removed at the end of the Shooting phase.

Marker Step
If your army includes any T'AU EMPIRE models, your Shooting phase is split into two steps. First, you highlight enemy targets in the Marker step. Then the rest of your army shoots in the Shooting step. The Marker step and the Shooting step each follow the same rules as a normal Shooting phase, with the following exceptions:
  • Units that are selected to shoot in the Marker step can also be selected to shoot in the Shooting step.
  • Models that are selected to shoot in the Marker step are only eligible to shoot Markerlight weapons in that step.

  • Markerlight Counters
Each time a TAU EMPIRE unit in your army makes a ranged attack in the Shooting step of your Shooting phase, you can re-roll the hit roll if the unmodified result is equal to or less than the number of markerlight counters the target has (e.g. against a target with 2 markerlight counters, you can re-roll a hit roll of 1 or 2).

Seeker (V1 – scales up with markerlights)
Seeker missiles do not depend on the fallible eyes of a gunner, but are instead controlled by an intelligent homing system. These fearsome single-use weapons pursue their targets as fiercely as any Kroot hound, following the holo-beam of allied markerlights like a scent trail.
  • A Seeker weapon can target a unit that is not visible to the bearer, provided that target has 1 or more markerlight counters.
  • Each time an attack is made with a Seeker weapon, the firing model has a Ballistic Skill characteristic of 6+ for that attack.
  • Each time an attack is made with a Seeker weapon, for each markerlight counter the target has, improve the firing model’s Ballistic Skill characteristic by 1 for that attack.

  • Seeker (V2 – expend markerlights)
Seeker missiles do not depend on the fallible eyes of a gunner, but are instead controlled by an intelligent homing system. These fearsome single-use weapons pursue their targets as fiercely as any Kroot hound, following the holo-beam of allied markerlights like a scent trail.
Each time an attack is made with a Seeker weapon, the firing model has a Ballistic Skill characteristic of 6+ for that attack. At the end of the Marker step of your Shooting phase, you can select any number of enemy units with at least 1 markerlight counter. Remove 1 markerlight counter from each of the selected units. Until the end of the phase:
  • Each time an attack is made with a Seeker weapon against one of those units, you can ignore any or all hit roll and Ballistic Skill modifiers.
  • Each time you select a target for a Seeker weapon, that weapon can target one of those units even if it is not visible to the bearer.
