Time to pick winners for the July round, where entrants were given the prompt "Nothing To Fear But Fear Itself", leading them towards both the fearless and the frightful and sometimes both in a single entry! The minis on show run the gamut from modern fantasy to sci-fi horror, from dark fantasy to the eldritch and occult, but among this terrifying selection, there can only be one winner! As always, feel free to vote for as many entries as you feel deserve recognition, and for any reason, be that the quality of the paintjob or modelling, the interpretation of the theme, the effort on show or anything else you think deserves a nod. You're also very welcome to leave some feedback for the entrants, and many of the images link through to the Dakka gallery, so throw them a vote there as well if you fancy.

Good Job again everyone.... my favourites this months

Aelyn: Belladamma Volga

Just love seeing people play around with ways of painting, the monocrome effect with the red splash looks really cool... exactly a Sin City type of look.. Nice.

queen_annes_revenge: Night Lords Praetor and Black Mask

More for the Night Lord, love the light coming up from the neck and how it emphasises his gross pallor. did you base it on an artwork? I'm getting a really familiar vibe from it? cant place it though...

Power Elephant: Ant-folk Gunslinger

Just love this little guy, haven't seen the model before, where's it from?

............ there's loads more good stuff everyone's done this month, and flung a cheeky vote at a couple more ;-) Well done everyone...

My votes go to DV8, queen_annes_revenge and Warpig1815: BF-109 for the same reason I usually give my votes, which is that they stand out from the rest in quality.

I made it recently. For now you can only get it as a file for printing, or I guess you could message me directly if you really wanted it.

I've just now finished another model in the same line, the ant queen. I dobut I'll be able to have her compete next month in the challenge, but sooner or later she'll compete too.

Great stuff all! My votes went to:
Freya: Love the lighting effect on these
Queen Anne's: Creepy, dark, and per usual, flawlessly executed
DV8: Beautiful blends, except maybe for the blue/white on the back of the cloak. Otherwise, everything about this paintjob comes together really nicely.
MS07b7: Very characterful, atmospheric, and appropriately gothic for Sisters. Well done.
Warpig: Lovely weathering. This looks super realistic.
Ezki: Impressive execution, I particularly like the glaze on the main eye.
Paradigm: I like that this is muted and spectacular at the same time.

Thanks for the inspiration everyone, see you next time

There were quite a few entries this month that I really wanted to give a vote to, but as usual I stick to my top 5 (In order of appearance):

QAR - As expected, another excellent pair of minis QAR. I'm particularly taken with the Night Lord - your colour selection, soft pallette and shading are all quite simply exquisite. Honestly, superb work .

Power Elephant - First, let me compliment you on a brilliant piece of 3D modelling. I'm learning the ropes myself, so I'm thoroughly impressed in your skill there. You painting is also top quality too, especially with such vivid colours. Well done indeed!

DV8 - Another exceptional entry. Every month DV8 enters a Marvel mini the subject just doesn't do it for me. But the technical skill of your painting trumps my misgivings each and every time. Truly impressive blending, and once again the vivid saturation of the colours is especially appealling. Great work!

Paradigm - Glorious. Recently, I've found myself going off Warhammer, and especially the over liberal use of tacky gold on everything. But your choice of copper and earthy tones here has turned that model into something stunning. Also, it may seem odd, but for me the base is as eyecatching as the model - you've outdone yourself with capturing the age worn stonework. Sublime.

Aelyn - Your entry this month really caught my eye. Working with such a limited pallette, you've managed to stuff oodles of character into that model and I think that out of all the entries this month, those 7 splashes of red in an otherwise pale world really captured the essence of fear. Excellent work!

As per, all entries were worthy of a vote, and not one was without it's merits. Well done everyone .

Thanks WP. Everytime I see your entries I always want to break open some of my scale models. My scale skills are incredibly amateur compared to my figure/miniature painting. I always get put off by the fiddliness and absolute precision required for scale.

Thanks for the kind words on Yndrasta, folks. Really put my all into that model to try and do it justice, it was such a fun one to paint.

@GulGog: 'muted but spectacular' is pretty much what I was shooting for, I wanted the armour to stay quite practical and a little weathered and dulled while the wings and weapons got a bit more vibrancy and contrast, to try and capture the model's dichotomy of both a war-weary soldier and a resplendent angelic being.

@warpig: Glad you noticed the base, I really tried to make the stonework stand out and pack a lot of visual interest into it. So often I am very lazy with bases, but with both the size and detail on Yndrasta's I did what I could to make sure the base was as impressive as the model atop it.

Some amazing stuff all round this month, but Freya's lich and Ezki's Beholder take the cake for me, nice to see some classic DnD stuff amongst all the wargaming and executed so well.

@QAR - My scale skills are mediocre at best really (And I'm consistently impressed with mini painters because I think it's harder personally). But, I say go for it. A change is as good as a rest as they say. You don't have to be bound by the limitations of history. In fact, I think it would be more impressive if you could carry over techniques used for miniature painting onto an aircraft. A 1950s Spitfire XIV racer done up in NMM silver would be incredible!

@Para - It really makes the model. I'd ask you how you did it, but I'm unlikely to be able to replicate it

You'd be surprised! It's a solid 90% just successive drybrushes and washes applied almost at random on the stonework, sometimes by brush and sometimes by sponge. I just used a different colour mix each time, and a different level of opacity, and applied it quite patchily to build up the impression of texture and age. Some greens and browns for the areas closer to the swampy base, a few reds or ochres on the higher areas, and an off-white drybrush on the prominent edges of the steps where they've been chipped away. The trick is leaving enough of the initial base colour showing that it all still looks like the same stone, just treated differently by the various elements.

The surrounding swamp is just a base of Aggrellan Earth, washed with greens and browns and drybrushed with lighter browns and greys. The reeds are old brush bristles glued in clumps, and the scattered bones are leftovers from a batch of skeletons that didn't 3d print right (waste not, want not! ).

No way. I reckon the painting techniques for scale models are generally easier individually, compared to something like painting a miniature face, or NMM, but the bit I find difficult with scale is the patience and precision required to finish each part before moving on. I'm too impatient. With gaming miniatures, I usually start on the figure in sub assemblies, unbased, and work on bits here and there until I can then build it up, and if I do mess up, it's usually pretty easy to either improvise a solution, or take it apart to fix, but with scale you don't get that so much.

I have dabbled in scale before. I did a spitfire a few years ago and also a 1/35 doobi bulldozer (which is a sick model) but they are pretty amateurish. I have a 1/48 ak interactive 'times of glory and oblivion' mig kit that comes with flat tyres and faded decals so you can do a weathered abandoned plane, so I may crack that open at some point.

@QAR - Admittedly, scale modelling is less forgiving in that sub assembly is limited. I mean you can paint each part individually, but it does make it harder to keep a consistent weathering pattern between parts which would wear in parallel (For example, undercarriage fairings and underwing surfaces). And perhaps the lack of surface detail in large flat panels makes it harder to create interest and depth to a model.

But I maintain that model for model, creating a sense of realism in a mini is orders of magnitude more challenging than on a scale model. You say that it's patience and precision, and that may be true of the assembly procedure (and the cockpit), but the painting couldn't be broader strokes if you tried! A bit of careful masking, and away you go. My blog is testimony to that - it's 90% me rambling about fitting issues with the kit, and then 10% painting.

Or perhaps it's personal aptitude. I'll admit that I don't deem myself creative. I'm derivative - with an analytical and logical mind. When I look at your work (or many other entries this month), the creativity in subconciously understanding how blends pull together to create the impression of depth is beyond me (and the restraint to build them up gradually). But on a scale model, I can mimic weathering patterns for those specific subjects, where oil or glycol leaks, where water pools and rusts, how cordite and exhaust gases carbonise the surfaces. So the analytical part of my brain allows me to fake where the truly creative part is lacking.

Wow, no one likes the (not)Crimson Devils? I was pretty happy with them, at least as an exercise in highlighting different surfaces...

Nevelon: Another triumph in contrast. I like the version with the shiny red mouth parts a bit more-- the gloss looks great against the matte.

Freya: Your choice of bright, almost fluorescent colors make me think of a black light Frazetta poster. This is a high compliment.

lifeafter: The assassin and the background having almost the exact same color palette is an interesting choice. I wonder if the eyes could use a spot highlight to draw in the viewer's eye...?

queen_annes_revenge: No lightning bolts on the NL? Is that allowed?

ShadowsAndDust: Solid work on that dread. I like the edge highlighting-- I can never get mine to turn out that well.

SirOllox: A very clever kitbash that shouldn't work, but somehow does. Your choice of earthtones works well.

Yorkright: I like your choice of greenish highlights rather than blue or grey.

Flinty:A wild selection of models. The reflected blue light on the Ambull is quite effective.

Power Elephant: What a fun model! Lots of little details to keep the viewer interested.

vejut: Your choice of purple as a through-color (is that a word?) is inspired, as is the mosaic base on the demon.

DV8: Great work on a normally ridiculous character. I particularly like the fishbowl helmet.

me: As I have mentioned before, these aren't really very good models. I found all the different surfaces a challenge to work with. The shading on the semi-circles turned out better than that on the giant boxes on their shoulders. That said, these guys made an appearance in a game of Five Parsecs From Home just a few days ago, taking down half of my crew, so even if they aren't getting votes, they caused plenty of fear in game.

ms07b7: Classic black and red Battle Sisters-- can't go wrong there. The weapons are intriguing-- they don't have the standard glowy effect one normally sees on miniatures, but the black spotting makes them look like they've been heated in a forge--I like that effect.

Arakasi: I like the red piping on the white body suit. No hiding in shadows for this assassin!

Captain Brown:Solid work on some funky older models.

Warpig1815: Scale models like this are so far out of my wheelhouse that I'm not really sure what I can comment on, but I am impressed.

Jamie Shred:Weird, creepy models. The drippy slime on the last one is a nice touch.

the_balloon_dog: That's quite an ambitious customization. I like the fire in the ribcage. The other burning areas could probably use some reflected light to really sell the effect.

Tallandra: Solid work on the chaplain. His presence on the tabletop should make your opponent rethink his tactics.

Ezki: Nice work, especially the eyes.

Viterbi: Nice OSL work on the tesseract-- I can never seem to get the effect to work.

Paradigm: Your transition from red to blue on the wings is quite impressive, as is the grimy stonework on the base.

Turaxa: I like the classic colors on this classic model.

MobileSuitRandom: A much darker take on this model than you normally see. The crazy eyes are a subtle detail that really add to the model.

Gulgog TufToof: One doesn't see a lot of blue and white with orks. so this banner should really stand out.

Midget Gems: The dark reds, tans, and especially the medium grey on the armor make this model seem like it's seen a few miles. Very nice.

Feltmonkey: Nice vermin that should be useful in a number of games. I'm going to try the girsaille method you mentioned.

Maharg: The grey skin reminds me of Tom Savini's zombie makeup in Dawn of the Dead. An inspired choice.

Aelyn: Monotone is an interesting choice for the model. The red eyes really pop against the white skin.

SmallChanges: Nice work on an impressive model. The pinions on the head and legs could probably do with a little shading, though.

In conclusion: Great work, everyone!

Now showing Samurai Marines!

Painting total as of 3/18/2024: 14 plus a set of modular spaceship terrain

Painting total for 2023: 79 plus 28 Battlemechs and a Dragon-Balrog

You may have noticed already but these past few months I've been testing something. See, I had the same type of experience as you. I do a decent job highlighting and playing with the models shades but something just wasn't right. It took me a moment to really sit back and figure out what it was. I took a look at art I loved and art that was good and compared them. Most of the top paint jobs I loved were flashy and technically perfect to boot. Though I'm too much of an amateur to really get perfect paint jobs like DV8 and QAR... I could at least do one of those things. So I dug deep into contrast and started going for the simple fun flashy models. I'm not exactly aiming to win with them, to do that I'd need far more skill. But as it stands, I'm learning a lot about painting and how to combine colors to make models look really cool. Once I get a better handle on that, I can work on the big stuff... like my NMM which is gonna take a lot more than a few months to get good at... or my oil knowledge which is miniscule... some day maybe I'll buckle down and get serious... but today isn't that day. Today is the time to experiment and play around.

All in all, I thought your models were pretty cool. They look like you poured a lot of love into them and honestly, I'm all about that. You take the time each month to pour over everyone elses models and at least say one thing. I guess I'm a bit of a softie but I always like looking at your models and I appreciate your passion for the hobby. For you it seems to be more than just a challenge to your own skill... but a challenge to bring everyone around you up. So thanks.

I think I gave them a vote. They're well painted for sure.

This competition is a strange one... I've had months where I've thought the model I painted was one of my best, and not placed, and had others where I had no motivation and dragged a reluctant paint job out and come top. I've also noticed that non gw models don't do very well (for me at least) and I usually get more votes when I'm higher up the voting table. Might just be coincidence, who knows, basically, don't take it to heart, because it's probably just bad luck.

Also the vast majority of entries get 10 votes or less. However what keeps me going is the motivation support and the kind contributions

Regarding the blue reflection, I think it’s the bit that worked best on the ambull. I think I went over board with the green.

@Josh-in-Japan - QAR makes a good point - non-GW tends to do worse than the alternative in general. I'm surprised that I even get votes, because scale modelling tends to be skipped over on Dakka. The interest I recieve in these comps vastly outweighs the interest I've had in the Showcase forum, or on my blog. It's also worth noting that the votes each month are roughly one order of magnitude higher than the number of participants - so you're not just being judged by us lot (who are more invested in each other's progression), but also by many members just passing through.

For what it's worth, although I didn't vote for yours, they were still a very appealling little set. Your blending is excellent (a point I fail at) and you certainly manage to squeeze every bit of character and detail from minis which don't have the benefit of CAD design and crisp moulding (a challenge in itself). Perhaps it's the subject which holds peoples votes back, but that's no bar to the fact that your results are consistently impressive.

And as Freya says - your enthusiasm for everyone elses work is a credit to you .

To be fair wp, I think scale does well in here partly for the novelty value, not meaning that in a way that takes anything from your work mind. The couple of scale entries that I've done a few years back got quite a lot of interest.

On Instagram however, it's a different game. If you stop posting gw stuff for a while you tend to lose followers. I know guys on there who set up different accounts to post scale stuff in because people were unfollowing them.

@QAR - No no, that's a fair point. It is something of a novelty. Perhaps a matter of my expectations - I only started my blog recently, so there's not as much appeal for anyone to follow it (Where's my tiny violin....? ). Which is understandable lacking because this is primarily a Wargaming/Sci-fi/Fantasy forum after all.

I stick around mainly because Dakka lacks overwhelming ass-hattery. At least in the P&M subforum. Some of our other dungeons have some absolute mouthbreathers in there...

Honestly (at least in my experience too) the discussion that can happen even in the Project Log subforum isn't what it once used to be. I remember way back in the day (like 10 years ago) when I used to post more in forums (Dakka, Warseer, B&C), you'd be able to generate tons of discussion and have conversations just firing back and forth. Nowadays, it's like, meh. Even my own PLog is pretty dead even when I was posting fairly regularly (and honestly I haven't really been keeping up because it's just not doing it for me lol). I think part of the problem is it's far easier to post to something like Instagram that you can link to Twitter, Facebook, etc. and just fire off one post and have it shoot cross-platform.

Most of the time now I just post my monthly piece for this Dakka Challenge and answer the occasional question in P&M.

Thanks man! Honestly I've been on a bit of a Marvel tear, and that's further compounded by the fact that I have absolutely zero interest in AoS and 40k at the moment (hero-hammer/monster-mash doesn't do it for me, and 40k needs something more than 2-wound Space Marines to fill the meta).

There is a lot of credence to this point. I lose followers every day that I post non gw models on Instagram. Personally I don't care, I'll paint what I want cuz its not for them, it's for me. But still, any non gw tends to get less attention and not just here... reddit, insta, you name it...

Wow, thanks for coming to my pity party, everyone. I appreciate your kind words to salve my bruised ego. I feel a little ridiculous for having reacted the way I did, and I plan to just keep doing what I've been doing (painting models for gaming), and at the same time find one thing to work on, as per Freya's suggestion.

Let's all keep at it, supporting each other on our respective hobby journeys!

Now showing Samurai Marines!

Painting total as of 3/18/2024: 14 plus a set of modular spaceship terrain

Painting total for 2023: 79 plus 28 Battlemechs and a Dragon-Balrog

I was on a trip while I did my votes, but better later than never:
These are not in any particular order.

QAR: The NMM looks really good and all the spot colors, especially on the table, really did it for me.

Warpig: I loved the weathering: it really sells the model. Especially the streaking effects on the bottom.

Jamie Shred: The theme of the entry really caught my eye. I especially liked both of the nemesis models.

Paradigm: You have really outdone yourself with this one! In my opinion this is one of your best entries. Nice work on the wings!

Arakasi: Nice, clean colors. This is one of my favorite entries from you. The picture could be a bit bigger though

DV8: The colors and the exceptional blending is truly something to marvel at (pun intended). But seriously, nice work!

Regarding the talk about voting: my votes tend to go to the entries that are especially interesting to me (theme, colors, technique etc.) or when I think the entrant has really outdone themselves. The last one of course usually means that I should vote for every single entry, as I think everyone truly shines every month!
When I don't give a vote to an entry, it does not mean that I do not like it. I'm trying to keep the votes to 5-6 each month, which is really, really hard.

Regarding my own entries: I think my models fare better in the voting when I think they are not that good technically and when I stick to the basics. When I try to master a more advanced technique, like blending or glazing for example, the entry usually gets less votes. After thinking about it for a while, I think the main reason for that is contrast. When I paint my entry more quickly, I tend to do more harsh and brighter highlights, so the model ends up more defined. When I try to do blending / glazing, the contrast is much lower even though I might be more proud of the result. I might be completely wrong, but I think the lesson to learn here is that I should not be afraid to push the contrast harder and not to try making every color shift perfect.
Hopefully this made sense. Just got back home from a long trip and I'm quite tired, so this rambling might not make sense at all

Anyway, I'm thrilled to get so much votes when competing with such talented people!
