I went to the site to see if my tau got any new love (I wish) and I got shovelled into a queue for Kill Team Orktarius - something that I didn't want. I couldn't leave the queue, and when I waited for it, I got dumped onto GW's front page.

Is GW throttling visitors to its page, was there a special release today, or are they just f****d up?

Well the kill team octavious. Site was getting more visitors than usual so queue to ensure site works smoothly. No timeouts when paying etc.

Common feature these days for big boxset releases.

GW started using the system on their website on weekends when they have high popularity options on sale. It started with Dominion and they've rolled it out a few times.

Note it also impacts Forgeworld as well (its all one system).

It's basically designed to ease the flow of users into the site so that the site doesn't end up doing what it did during Indomitus - crashing constantly.

I suspect having their customer base double and the lockdown impact both combined so that the GW store got a LOT more hits than normal at launch times which their system wasn't built to cope with.

IT can be frustrating at times, but it only happens on big launch saturdays and even then if sales and pressure lower they seem to turn it off early if its no longer needed.

Setting up their web infrastructure so that only people who wanted to buy the new release would be have to queue would definitely be doable, but it would also be hugely expensive and generally a massive hassle. That's why everyone has to queue.

If you go to games workshop's website and just want to browse the tau, the same server that's processing that request is also processing the thousands of people who just want the new box set.

Think of it like trying to go to the supermarket on the same day there's some big new release of pokemon cards. Even though you're only there to buy a pint of milk you still have to use the same doors and tills as all the people there to get the hot new releases. So the supermarket might ask everyone to queue before they go in simply as a means of controlling the flow of people. That is essentially what gw has done.

Yep and its fair. Lets face it its only the new limited stuff that's actually limited on the day; so anything regular that you want you know will still be there in a few hours. You can either wait for another day or just join the line and get in a bit later.
