I was looking for some suggestions on how to paint some chess sets that I printed for my boys that I will give to them for Christmas. Each set is based on their likes, so I have 6 different chess armies and do not really want to go with the usual 'paint every mini perfectly', as it may take too much time. I have seen some in a solid color with a wash and drybrush, but think that might be too simple.

Any thoughts on a fairly fast and nice looking technique to show the piece details? Any pics of previous work done?

I have attached some photos and you can also go to Thingiverse and search for 'mdsw' to see the sets in question.

Thanks!!!

This would seem to be a prime purpose for contrast paints. Lets you see all the details, and smoother highlights compared to rough and ready drybrushing.

Please excuse any spelling errors. I use a tablet frequently and software keyboards are a pain!

If you want simple but with some pop, maybe a Sin City-esque job. Primarily monochrome (which could be base/drybrush, contrast, or intricately wet blended, depending on how much time and effort you have). Then pick out one or two major details and use a bright accent color.

For chess I still always prefer the classic statue look. Granite or weathered metal look.

This. Pot of black contrast, pot of bone contrast - job done.

Cool... I do like the weathered metal look, so maybe steel and brass schemes...

Thanks to Veldrain for the metal idea. Here are some pieces from the first set. Super quick and easy and I think the look came out nice.
