Unlike most people who bought Hexfire, I don't already collect either army, and I'm not splitting the box with a friend either - I'm starting both armies at once!

I've already bought both codexes, another squad of Purifiers, and Ahriman to take each army up to 650 points.

I'd like some feedback on the following unit choices and loadouts, as well as some suggestions for which units to add next. With GK units getting a 5+ FNP, and TS units getting a 5++, I'm wondering if vehicles could be viable?

Anyway, here's what I'm planning on building initially:

GK Vanguard Detachment
Spoiler:

HQ
Castellan Crowe

ELITE
5 Purifiers with Nemesis Force Swords and 2 Psycannons
5 Purifiers with Nemesis Force Swords and 2 Psycannons
5 Purifiers with Nemesis Force Swords and 2 Psycannons

HEAVY SUPPORT
Nemesis Dreadknight with a Nemesis Greatsword, Heavy Psycannon and Dreadknight Teleporter

TS Patrol Detachment
Spoiler:

HQ
Ahriman with Disc of Tzeentch
Infernal Master

TROOPS
10 Tzaangors with Autopistols, Chainswords, a Brayhorn and a Herd banner

ELITE
5 Scarab Occult Terminators with a Soulreaper Cannon and a Hellfyre Missile Rack
Tzaangor Shaman

I'm not a verteran of either army by any means, I only had about 500 pts of Grey Knights previous to Hexfire and had always wanted to get into Thousand Sons, but never had. That being said:

Some Terminators seem like they could be a good addition for the troops slot. I'd say Paladins are more worth it with the 2+ WS, but you're already very Elite heavy as is and with your low model count, you're going to want some OBsec units. It would probably be better to change one to a Strike squad, that way you've got another OBsec and aren't spending 2CP on the Elite Detachment.

Rubric Marines are really good. I'd recommend some of those to help out. Not sure where the Deamons/Vehicles landed for Thousand Sons in the new codex, haven't had a chance to field any yet myself.

Yes, the obsec issue with the GK list did occur to me. I'm a big fan of elite lists though, and it is super-fluffy having Crowe lead the Purifiers into battle.

Do others not run elite-heavy vanguard detachments?

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Rubrics would certainly be the iconic choice for the TS list if I wanted more troops.

The problem with mass purifiers is they don't get brotherhood benefits as they are honoured Knights. Most lists I've seen include strike squads and interceptors over purifiers. That said you don't have to follow the trend.

You could add in another HQ and give them unyielding anvil to give the purifiers obsec but then you'd need to keep them all together.

I could field the Dreadknight as a Grand Master and do that, but as you say, it's not ideal.

Would the following GK Patrol Detachment be a better mix?

Spoiler:

HQ
Castellan Crowe

TROOPS
5 Strike Squad with Nemesis Force Swords and a Psycannon

ELITE
5 Purifiers with Nemesis Force Swords and 2 Psycannons

FAST ATTACK
5 Interceptors with Nemesis Force Swords and a Psycannon

HEAVY SUPPORT
Nemesis Dreadknight with a Nemesis Greatsword, Heavy Psycannon and Dreadknight Teleporter

My worry about this list would be it's ability to take on swarm armies. You hit plenty hard, but that might not be enough if they have a mountain of models. This is just personal preference, but for me, I'd run the Interceptors with an Incinerator and Nemesis Falchion's and keep the rest as is and dump them next to the most vulnerable target; but again, that's just me, the amount of Storm Bolters may be just fine to deal with that. I do think this list is totally fine as is.

for the tsons, you 100% need more rubrics. if you dont mind doing a little proxy and kitbashing to create a 2nd aspiring sorcerer, you could run 2 x5 squads, a sorcerer, 3 bolters and a soulreaper for the rear objective, and 5 flamer squad (well, 4 flamers and a sorc with flame pistol) for deep strike/risen rubricae shenanigans (with 12" flamers they can DS in and unleash 5d6 AP-2 flamer hits on a target...which they can also do in overwatch). Also, consider the Icon of flame, for an extra cabal point, in a small list like this you will be really struggling for them.

If you haven't already build the tzanngor, i would suggest going with the tzanngor blades option over the pistol and chainsword. 10 bs 4+ str 3 shots isnt really worth that much (something like half a wound vs t4/t5 3+), but that extra point of AP in melee form the blades, spread over all thier melee attacks, will often make more of a difference. the heard banner isnt great either, its fine to soak up a few points but really, if your taking a morale check your likely to fail anyway, re-roll or no. warhorn is a good choice though.

To be a man in such times is to be one amongst untold billions. It is to live in the cruelest and most bloody regime imaginable. These are the tales of those times. Forget the power of technology and science, for so much has been forgotten, never to be relearned. Forget the promise of progress and understanding, for in the grim dark future there is only war. There is no peace amongst the stars, only an eternity of carnage and slaughter, and the laughter of thirsting gods.

No, I've not built anything yet. I've just got Hexfire, another Strike Squad sprue and Ahriman so far. I'm playing with ideas and thinking about how these armies are going to evolve before starting.

I think I'm coming round to the idea that the Patrol Detachment is just going to be more flexible, given the way that GW has designed the rules. To be honest, although I like Purifiers, having 12" horizontal movement, Interceptors does appeal.

Would Rubrics be a better option than more Scarab Occult Terminators? Also, are Tzangoors worth taking at all?

Forget purifires for a while, before you want to deploy them into battlefield you definetly want to max yourself on dreadknights, interceptors and strike squads.
GMNDK
CASTELLAN CROWE
3x5 strike marines (No heavy weapons, just all halberds or all swords depends on the metagame . Best thing modelingwise is magnetizing weapon hands becouse what is best equipment often changes)

10xinterceptos from another strike box (same thing here No special weapons, just mele and stormbolters)

You have a pretty good batalion to start your army.

I'm going to go with this GK Patrol Detachment:

Spoiler:

HQ
Castellan Crowe
Grand Master in Nemesis Dreadknight with a Nemesis Greatsword, Heavy Psycannon and Dreadknight Teleporter

TROOPS
5 Strike Squad with Nemesis Force Swords and a Psycannon

ELITE
5 Purifiers with Nemesis Force Swords and 2 Psycannons

FAST ATTACK
5 Interceptors with Nemesis Force Swords and a Psycannon

And having picked up a box of Rubric Marines, this TS Patrol Detachment:

Spoiler:

HQ
Ahriman with Disc of Tzeentch
Infernal Master

TROOPS
10 Rubric Marines with Warpflamers and a Soulreaper Cannon

ELITE
5 Scarab Occult Terminators with a Soulreaper Cannon and a Hellfyre Missile Rack

That should give me a solid foundation for both armies (starting with 650 points of GK and 800 points of TS) to build over the winter. I've not decided what to do with the Tzaangors yet, but they're not going to be included to start with.
