Hi everyone,

I am working on an Aeldari kill team and I like the idea of it being built around a group of rangers from Craftworld Altansar. I am going to write some fluff about the key members of this of this ranger team, including the previous paths they trod before become outcasts. But I had a few questions about the time that Altansar spent trapped in the eye of terror.

Asurmen introduced the path to the Aeldari immediately after the Fall. Altansar disappears into the Eye 500 years after the Fall. As such, would it be reasonable to assume that the principles of the Path had reached Altansar by the time the were sucked into the Eye?

Whilst stuck in the eye, would there have been much call for the services of rangers, or even the opportunity to become one, given that everywhere outside the craftworld would be tainted and controlled by Chaos? Or do you think rangers would have become more of a “thing” once Altansar re-emerged into real-space? I guess there would have been forays to explore certain Crone worlds and try to discover we way portals!

Any thoughts or guidance much appreciated.

Typical!

The tactical need for having scouts with camo-cloaks and sniper rifles exists outside of the social construct of the Paths. You might have people armed and trained like Rangers who in practice are just specialist Guardian militiamen without the whole "Path of the Outcast" thing going on.

Balanced Game: Noun. A game in which all options and choices are worth using.

I like this take a lot. "Shadow Guardians" or what have you. To my knowledge, it isn't clear whether or not Altansar utilized the path system prior to being yoinked out of the warp by Maugan Ra, but we do know that Maugan Ra was from Altansar and thus knew of its existence. It doesn't seem like a stretch to say Maugan may have prioritized visiting Altansar when he and the other Phoenix Lords were spreading the path system to various craftworlds. So basically, that particular detail could go either way depending on the story you want to tell.

If you really wanted to, you could maybe even fluff your rangers as a type of aspect warrior whose shrine is a spin-off of the dark reaper tradition. Rather than relying on bulky armor and heavy weapons, the shrine emphasizes the importance of personal skill in identifying weak points and placing shots shots to exploit them. So they wear thinner armor that lets them move into position (deepstrike) and include camo cloaks in their wargear to escape detection while they line up the perfect shot. Could be cool, although I personally probably prefer Rake's specialist guardian take on things.

ATTENTION
. Psychic tests are unfluffy. Your longing for AV is understandable but misguided. Your chapter doesn't need a separate codex. Doctrines should go away. Being a "troop" means nothing. This has been a cranky service announcement. You may now resume your regularly scheduled arguing.
