The title says it all. Jagged Alliance 1 Gold Edition is currently free on Steam, and will remain that way until the 23rd.

This game was well-liked back in the late '90s when it came out. I've never played it myself, but it was a turn-based tactical shooter similar to the original X-Com. Unlike X-Com, the gameplay focused on hiring and running a team of mercenaries trying to free an island from the clutches of the man who has seized it. Also unlike X-Com, your mercenaries aren't more or less interchangeable Chrysalid-bait, but instead unique individuals hired by you from a roster of available potential employees.

Just as a note - this game is not updated in any way (aside from apparently being able to run on more modern Windows systems). The graphics are the exact same graphics that the original game had back in the late '90s. There's no fresh coat of paint over an old engine. But the original draw of this game was always the gameplay.

And it's free. Can't beat that.

Oh! I was keen on this one, but never got around to buying it when it was on sale. Thanks for the heads-up!

THQNordic is advertising that they're making a stab at a 'true successor' with Jagged Alliance 3.

And hoping people don't remember JA 'Back in Action' (or Rage, though they didn't publish that).

I figured there'd be at least a few people in that situation. You're welcome.

I did give Back in Action a try when I took the demo for a spin. The last straw that finally broke the camel's back, so to speak, was when - after slowly working my way across the map in the demo level, and quickly dealing with the various enemies I'd encountered without raising the alarm, somehow a trio of soldiers that I'd bypassed early on and that were on the far side of the map became alerted to my presence, and made a beeline for me.

The sad thing is that, as I understand it, Back in Action was basically the second game (which is also supposed to have been quite good), but ported over to the RTS engine that the developers were using for Back in Action.

JA2 was fun (its mostly the one I remember). A little weird in places, with some nasty difficulty spikes and some odd video game logic (hiring mercs but having to scavenge decent gear for them)

I vaguely remember trying the Back in Action demo, but it captured nothing of the game I remember. Rage was... really bad.
