I've only been in this hobby for a few months now, but everyone i've asked says "get what looks cool to you", and I wonder how many people actually do/did this?
I've been following this mentality and i'm going to get some imperial knights for my birthday in a week.

Definitly. When I started I still thought about "is this also an efficient choice?" But in time realized that I very much enjoy modelling, painting and collecting but don't seem to find time to play and will definitly never play in a tournament environment. So I stopped bothering if what I want is efficient and am very happy with that.

Yes, I chose the army where I liked the models. For me it's models>lore>gameplay when choosing an army.

Congrats on your new knight army, they are cool models that provide you with a big canvas to truly make them your own.

Never bought a unit I didn't like just because it was mechanically strong.

With Warhammer, that is a sure way to get frustrated and waste money in the not so long run.

Yes.

And it was a miserable experience for my friends, because the Armored Company army list was kind of a shocker and I thought Russes looked cool.

We quickly were able to overcome the problem with some frank talks though, which is good.

Yes and I died like a little rat for all of 8th with my army of DA terminators.

The same for Age of Sigmar with my army of khorne minotaurs and barbarians.

And looking back I would have chose the same, because I loved the models and the gameplay.

In 40k for example I knew I wanted to play something without vehicles (I don't like vehicles), so I started with Tau (I could chose Tau or Tyranids, Tau looked cooler to me, because suits instead of vehicles, but ironically I ended up liking more my hammerheads and devilfishes), jumped to space marines and then to Custodes in my pursuit for nearly all infantry armies (dreadnoughts are cool. I accept those)

That only applies for a single edition, and will probably change in a couple of years when the rules and codex get refreshed.

So, pick what you think looks good. If it is not much use now, it might be the best thing on the table next edition.

I liked the look of the Eldar way back when I restarted.
And later on, I thought I'd try painting Guard tanks.
Both armies come and go, but the models look nice.

Yes.

Little Grimtuff walked into his local GW for the first time and saw a "Chaos Space Marine Terminator with Heavy Flamer" blister pack and fell in love with that word salad.

I never bought it though, I instead got a 40k starter paint set (Dark Angel green bases represent!) and a loyalist Terminator Sergeant to lead them. I like Terminators (a lot) and still do to this day, regardless of what others think, you know why? Because they look fething cool. That's why.

Of course - I didn't get *everything* that looked cool to me when I started (it took me over ten years to finally pick up the Tau which I'd always had a soft spot for), but rule of cool was definitely the main reason I chose what I did.

Yes. My usual rule is to make coherent squads, but otherwise, i dont usually build for the current 'meta' because that's constantly changing.

For example my gsc are currently worst army in the game. At the end of 8th edition when their book came out, they were the best. Easy come, easy go.

but what I generally just do, is look at the squad im making and have SOME kind of plan for what the squad wants to do. I dont build 1 kombi-scorcha, 1 rokkit launcher in the same squad. I dont put guns in my boyz squads intended to get into melee, and I dont put Tankhammers in my tankbusta squads intended to shoot at range.

Very often, people get incredibly incredibly mad if an option is almost exactly the same as but very slightly worse than some other option. That generally doesnt bother me that much. Sure, OK, it would be better if my genestealer cult squads were 2 10-man squads with 4x lasers instead of 2 10-man squads with 2 lasers and 2 seismics. But I bet a shiny shiny nickel that when the new 'dex comes out, best loadout will be 4 seismics! And who comes out on top then? Well, still not me, but I come out less not on top than the guy who went on ebay and bought a bunch of extra lasers.

Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"

"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"

"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!"

Yup. Never bought a model that I didn't like just because it had good rules. In fact, I've bought models that I knew had bad rules just because I liked them (meet the Cerberus Heavy Tank Destroyer). The rules will always come around to where something is at least "OK" eventually. Chasing the meta dragon is always a waste of time.

Always bought what I found looks cool. What's strong might have influenced the order of when to buy what, though. So I would have bought those Nurgle bikers from puppets war anyway at some point, but since they were said to be the only good choice in the CSM Codex in 6th and 7th edition I got them sooner rather than later. Can't say they ever worked in the game, but they still look awesome .

Yep, I started collecting Imperial Guard back in 2nd edition because I liked the look of it, and have stuck with it. Just as well that I'm not too concerned about the performance of the army, since there haven't been many occasions since that the army has even been in the top half of what is considered good. Same goes for the models within the army, if I don't like the look of them (here's looking at you Taurox! Among other things...) or they don't fit the theme of what I think the army should be, I don't get them.

Since then I have collected more armies. Each of these armies has needed to be aesthetically pleasing to me, but also needs to fit in with the theme of my collection. So I now have a sizable Deathwatch and Sisters of Battle force, as well as Inquisition. Mainly because I can ally them with my Imperial Guard. I also decided to collect Tyranids to take on my Guard, and now also have GSC, mainly because they can ally with my Tyranids.

I've got my eye on Orks and Emperor's Children too, though have resisted the urge so far due to them not really fitting in with the rest of my collection. Probably just as well, I've got enough 40K models as it is.

I've only ever gotten models that looked cool to me, which is what led me to stop playing 40k, because once you have the minis in 9th people start telling you "oh, yeah, no, you have to buy a different army to play 9th."

While there are minis that are obsolete/legends/dropped, they are a tiny minority of the GW range. Most of the time when people tell you you need to buy new minis, it’s for what’s the cutting edge broken stuff you need for a competitive list.

But I’ve found that when everyone plays with minis they like, it generally balances out to something fun. Unless by chance someone’s tastes align with the meta. Which can happen.

100%. 40K as a hobby has a massive investment in time involved in getting any unit purchased out of the box and onto the table. its pretty much mandatory that if your going to spend 5-10 hours gluing, spraying and painting a single squad of guys....you better think they are cool enough to be worth it or, you'll loose interest haflway though and add them to your Pile of Shame, or even grow to hate these minis your only doing for their competitiveness.

so get that Knight, even if you dont play with them that much...your far more likely to have a cool, painted mini at the end of it than if you got The New Hotness.

I like a balanced aproach.

Get some models that look coll or that you like. Fill your list with that, about 33%. Fill out the amndatory slots (HC, troops) about 33%. The remaining 33% you get things that holds you army together.

A lot of truth here.

It’s not fun to get wrecked every time you put minis on the table for a game.

Start you list with what you love, and then figure out what you need to add to make it viable/legal. What shores up your fun units’ weaknesses? What can you add to leverage their strengths? What roles do they not fill that you want for a well rounded list?

Before 9th, I did this every game; I’m playing Crusade rules now, so have a much more static list. When tossing a list together, I’d pick a few units. Mostly it was fresh paint that needed to see the table. But other times it was old favorites that were getting a little too dusty. Normally 2-3. If they fit a theme I’d run with that, otherwise just put together a TAC list with them as the core.

I've never bought an army I didn't like, buy I also have pretty broad tastes. I will say:

Rule #1: Buy models you like the looks/lore of. You're going to spend a lot of time and money on the aesthetics, so get your time and money's worth.

Rule #2: Start small. This is where I see people get in trouble with #1. They fall in love with one specific model or type of model and buy a whole army of it and then its not very good and then they're disappointed. Starting small gives you something to work with, but leaves room for you to grow your army along with your understanding of the game. If you find that thing you love isn't great, maybe it needs a specific support or maybe its just okay that its not the best if its only like a quarter of your army. Either way, half of the fun is growing your army, and the tendency for players to try to start "complete" misses out on a lot of the joy of building.

I'll second this.

But also I really like the way my troops look, so I wind up with at least 66% of what I like the look of by default. . . and then I only tie my army together competitively with things I also like the look of, giving me a 100% like-the-look-of army

I voted "No".

Because....
While it is true that what I started with (SW Terminators) did - and still does - look cool IMO, it's honestly not why I bought it. "That's so cool" - yeah that thought never entered my mind. I bought my 1st army solely based on rules.

Kind of? I started in 2e by reading the crap out of the Codex Imperialis book. And I fell in love with Orks and Squats, probably because I was a huge fan of fantasy orcs and dwarves from Tolkien. I thought all the other factions were really cool too, and I was really intrigued by the background hinted at for the Blood Angels and the Imperium in general.

But when I looked at the models, I didn't think they really matched the background I was reading for the Orks, and there were no Squats for sale in my local toy shop, so I started Blood Angels, because there were lots of Space Marines available and they were cool enough. When Gorkamorka came out I got some of those cooler looking Orks, but never enough to make a full army. But then when 3e came out with the amazing Brian Nelson Orks I dropped my Marines and went straight for Orks and stuck with them for years. Nowadays, I think the backgrounds and models for almost every faction are cool, so I'm happy to pick up models for any faction, but if there are any models I don't like I completely ignore them.

I third this. Get what you like and round out your lists with what works well. These days there are very few units which make you auto-lose for taking them. Don't spam the current best thing but build varied lists and magnetize expensive models.

On an army level rather than a unit level, definitely get what you like most, pay no mind to efficiency. I have brought dozens of people into the game and people who picked their army based on efficiency have almost all left the game when their army was invalidated. Codices and editions can completely change the rules of your army, but models and fluff hangs around.
That said, some armies get more spotlight than others and some armies allow more varied play than others. For knights, you need to be aware that you will never be able to play anything but big, stompy robots (with all its advantages and disadvantages) and that you are unlikely to see big waves of releases for them since they are a small niche codex.

7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks do not think that purple makes them harder to see. They do think that camouflage does however, without knowing why.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.
Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers.
Orks do not have the power of believe.
