Hey guys, back in 8th I used to play tournaments pretty regularly and had a blast! I wasn’t necessarily a great player but I had a decent grasp on the game and enjoyed myself. However I’ve been on a hiatus from the game since the pandemic. I’ve played a handful of games of 9th but I feel pretty lost when it comes to list building. I was hoping some people could give me some pointers!

I enjoy playing imperial soup the most. I have a little bit of everything; knights, scions, admech, GK, custodes and sisters. None of any one particular faction for a mono faction army. Im mainly looking for ideas on how to layout a list to tackle the new objectives and be successful with what I have

Thanks in advance for any tips you guys can give me!

8th was a lot more about killing. 9th is a lot more about holding objectives.

How are you going to hold objectives? Are those units durable? Are they redundant? Are they fast or slow? Do they fill a purpose while on an objective?

Secondaries are half your score. Get familiar with them. Look at winning army lists. What would you take for secondaries against that army? What would be your max score? How will your units complete them?

Blocking your opponent's secondaries matters as well. What might they take against you that is easy? How can you prevent it? Is that trade-off worthwhile? Does it harm your overall battle plan?

Being a little more specific - I would try a soup where you have hard as nail Custodes holding objectives with their reactive stratagems, some nimble scions to carve out problem units, and maybe a knight or admech for some reliable fire power. Get a feel for how that works and tweak from there. GK can replace Custodes. Sisters can replace Scions. Admech is good all-round.

I just played in an 8 round tournament after a long hiatus. I played 3 games prior to the event of 9th.

1. I strongly recommend picking 2 Secondary objectives from the 2021 GW Grand Tournament book that you can build a list around. You need to get 12-15 points every game from these 2.

2. Primary objective. You need to be able to hold at least 2 objectives every round. Even if you are about to get knocked off one, be ready to either counter charge it back or grab another one.

3. Mobility. You need to get into 3 quarters or 4 fairly easily. Not necessarily by turn 2, but you have to be able to contest your opponents objective and block their secondary objectives.

4. Know your list. Know your strategems. Know your Stats like T, S, W, and saves very well. Know your special rules. Space marines? What round(s) is Assault Doctrine and what does it do? Which units are Core. Know your list. Make flash cards. No one has time for flip, flip, flip. Especially if clocks are used.

5. Assume ignorance before malice. I played people with fewer games than I played. Know one is traveling 4 states away, getting a hotel, and paying the entry fee for a major event just to lie to you about the number of wounds their captain has. TFGs are fewer than I’m the past, IMHO.

Have fun!

Yeah, think about how your going to hold objectives, How will you hold and defend your home objectives from deepstrikers? How are you going to take and hold mid field objectives and how are you going to disrupt your opponents home objectives?

And what secondaries can your army reliably do, do you need to take mobile (or deepstrike) small units to do actions in the middle and opponents side of the board?

One quick guide:

And a causius warning to pay attension to the tournament structure:

These are just general advice. Not very spesific.

Being able to spread out models in your table quarter with the home objective to deny deepstriking, other reserves, and redeployment (like neurons) is bigly smart.
