How do!

So I believe this came out on Thursday, and I’m playing it on PS5. I’ve never played this series before but I’m having a whale of a time on it. And it seems it’s a superior entry in the Far Cry series, so…yay!

Plot is fairly standard “evil dictator, time to smash his face in”, but it seems a competent example. Again as I’ve not played the others, I can’t really offer much of an opinion here.

Opening bit is something of a struggle, because the early, basic guns are pretty crap. But once you get some upgrades life becomes much easier. I did some YouTube studying, and found the following video. Definitely worth going for these when you get the chance. Shotgun in particular makes life far easier. Shoot people, and make them do the Burny dance!

Also got the grenade launcher without aiming specifically for it. That discovery made life far easier, as for the most part RPG stuff feels really difficult to come by. And you’ll need it against Helicopters, which are otherwise quite irritating!

Really, really enjoying this game so far. Like any good Open World game, you’re free to bimble around causing havoc.

Favourite mission so far involves The Vicious Chicken of Bristol. And it’s mates. I no longer blame Brave Sir Robin for running away.

Oh….favourite feature? You can set vehicles to Follow Road when driving. You still need to pay attention, because random AI shenanigans. But it is most welcome all the same, as the terrain can be unforgiving with even a light deviation from the road. Though my favour for it may stem from my life experience being Right Hand drive, and the game is Left Hand driver. Folks who normally drive Left Hand May find it less necessary.

The Far Cry series is rather well known for having great villains, it's hard to top the intensity of Vaas from the third game, though the upcoming DLC where you get to play as Vaas, Ming and Seed seems to be Ubi catching on to what a lot of people like about the series.

As mentioned elsewhere, loving it so far, this is my kind of game. Also one of the few I personally play through without using guides, exploration is always a big thing with these, though I get that people who CBA or have a time limit on things would resort to guides to get the good stuff. Ubi puts out a fair share of guides through their YouTube during launch to get people up to speed.

Weapons-wise, I preordered (I can already hear some gakkers froth) and got a few extra starting guns, most of them I won't be touching, but the elephant gun is a delight to have, right down to a satisfying reloading sequence that really conveys the heft of the gun. I am missing of the beefier, louder gun noises from the previous games however, these games were always loud and HOLLYWOOD when it came to the gun sounds, instead of "popcorn" with a lot of other modern shooters out there.

Cockfighting minigame came as a surprise, will see if I can bring myself to play more of it, ethics and all that.

But yeah, finally a Far Cry game where serious things happen but the main character isn't angsty or lamenting gak. Not some onion-headed douchebag on vacation, not some punk trying to deliver ashes of his mum, nope! Dani is here to fight for freedom and to feth gak up, because it is fun.

All I want now is a cameo by Hurk and Willis, then we know it's all there. Aaaaaaaaand hopefully no drug fuelled sequences, fething hell have I come to hate those.

The only absolute must have early weapon I would say is the Grenade Launcher, simply because Helicopters are such a PITA when you just have your supremo.

Your other weapons barely tickle them, and they just won’t sod off. The others are absolutely nice to have (the Humidor in particular is very nice to have), but you don’t need them. Plus you really do need to work for the Grenade Launcher.

Even without them, the game is a lot of fun. Whilst I do like my red dot sights, the earliest weapons don’t really cause you to struggle too much. Just keep moving and you should be fine.

And for heaven or the afterlife of your preference’s sake? Explore, explore, explore. You by no means need to be stealthy about it, just take the time to suss out what’s what and what’s where. Mortars make your life so much easier once you’ve sussed out where they are!

I still need to find a good grenade / rocket weapon, though I have my doubts that they'll be any good against choppers, having unlocked the custom T55 pretty early on and discovering that it doesn't make a dent in them with both the main gun and coax. I have found that just running off into a forest is usually enough to make them bugger off over time, that or lucking out and finding a Dushka emplacement, which can after some chipping take it down.

The early weapons are a mixed bag, the FN FAL (SLR for you lot) is a bit disappointing, but then again it always kicked like a mule in full-auto. But I've already decided to go for a CONTRA - guerilla themed playthrough weapon-wise, so a lot of 80's / lowtech weaponry, no fancy optics or too much plastic, so sticking with stuff like the AK, M16, FN and whatnot.

But agreed, the game is a lot of fun. This franchise is one of the few I go out of my way for to play the hell out of, also one of the few that I try to 100%

I have never really been able to get into these games. I'm not sure if its just being tired of the Ubisoft formula or shooters or open worlds a combination of the three, but they just haven't held me for very long.... with the exception of Blood Dragon. That was amazing and short enough to avoid a lot of the sense of busywork that causes me to lose interest in the real games.

I can see how a lot of the tooing-and-froing might put peeps off, but I adore competent open world games. Nothing quite like bimbling off to see what you can see, and getting into a scrap over it.

Though I accept this being my first Far Cry, I’m not affected by the aforementioned Ubisoft Formula. Even if it’s old hat in the genre and gaming hobby, it’s freshly new to me

Don't get me wrong, its a GOOD formula. I've just played it a lot in other games that are more my style. I'm not a huge FPS fan in general.

Have a few reservations before I dive in.

1. Dream/Drug sequences. It got old fast in Farcry 3. Then 4 made it worse, it featured heavily in Primal, 5 had what seemed like an entire portion of the map dedicated to drug sequences. Its just pointless filler. I don't mind it here and there, but when an entire mission is in some dream land with new bs mechanics, it breaks the pace/feel of the main game.

2. Is the story forced onto you? I remember being on a glider in FC5, in the middle of a quest and got a needle dart into my leg, sending me to sleep, and waking up across the map. Whats the point of the open world playground if you won't let me play in it.

3. Makeshift weapons. I never got the standalone game that came after FC5, as it seemed like it was going for a poorly done Fallout imitation and featured silly weapons. I see in the previews that you have all sorts of weird scratch built weapons. I'd rather not. Can you play without them?

4.Skippable dialogue & cutscenes. I mostly don't care about it after the first viewing. Just let me play.

With all that said, I generally enjoy the FC games when they get out of your way and let you play. Loved the stealth mechanics and the gunplay in most of the games.

No dream/drug sequences so far.

You can pick your own mission priority. I’ve never been forcibly hoiked out of one.

Supremos are fun, but you don’t need to rely on them. The custom guns are entirely optional.

I’ve not skipped anything, but I have seen the button. Whether it’s every dialogue, I dunno.

Need to find a place where they play domino, I am reluctant to leave the first region I'm playing through right now, wanting to take down those putos one region at a time, but the time-limited challenges for this week include playing a single game of domino.

Which is an important reminder: partake in the weekly challenges, no telling when Ubisoft will stop supporting them and right now the rewards are good: four spray cans, 500 of that currency you can only get through playing coop missions and the always quite useless XP for your Ubisoft account.

edit.

Alsoooooo, there are free rewards you can get for the game: a Chorizo dashboard model, some pesos and three packs of themed cocks: Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter and Anton versus Resistance cock.

But okay, found out dominoes is only played in one spot, just like how, erm, rooster fights are only held in one place as well.

Well, that’s a bummer.

Might it be a delayed release? I don’t really do PC gaming so don’t know an awful lot about the inner workings of Steam.

It's an Epic "exclusive" for what? Six to twelve months? YMMV, but Steam is much preferable to Epic or Ubi's launcher, the latter in particular suffers from stability whenever a big launch is underway. ERROR CODE SNOWSHOE or the like, ugh.

Wrapped up the main story of the first area and have moved on to tracking down the Legends, who also have a domino table in their camp, so after playing that a few times I managed to bag the last of the weekly challenges for that last spray can and oh-so worthless XP.

Loving the characters so far, yet to meet one that's gotten on my nerves by being lol-memes or trying too hard to be edgy. Also some pokes and nods to the previous games, found the obligatory Assassin's Creed reference and a (none too) subtle nod to the Cleaners from the first Division game, if you know the faction and the weapons they're most known for.

Also discovered the Caveira bundle, being the Siege fan I am, had to get it, as it quite nicely complements my current mode of play, being stealthy.

I’m onto the second part of the story, with only a couple of Yaran Stories left to do on the first part.

I’ll nip back and do those when I fancy some mindless violence.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Just completed a random Treasure Hunt. Wound up with a Rocket Launcher with lock-on ammo.

That’ll do nicely!

Now onto the third area, and won my first game of Dominos.

The story continues to plod along, but it’s not really feeling like we’re achieving anything. See, you run around and do these missions, but you don’t take out anyone of any real consequence.

I am likely still fairly early on, so hoping we’ll be upping the death count soon.

The game seems mostly focused on building up support in all three regions and once you've got that, you can make a move on the capitol itself.

Did sit through my first genuinely unpleasant cutscene yesterday, ugh.

The Far Cry series has been so hit and miss for me.

The original Far Cry is one of the best games ever made, even with the dodgy monsters. It was one of the first great sandbox games and for the time, and still today, had some of the most amazing visuals. The enemy AI wasn't stupid which made the fights great, and being sand box, there were so many ways to approach a mission. The one with the old WW2 aircraft carrier was just, wow.

Then came Far Cry 2 - worst game EVER. This came out around the time PC games were being ported over to consoles and it showed. Its why I hate consoles and why console players are looked at in disgust by PC players. Game play was so disgustingly repetative because consoles couldnt handle variation at the time. I tossed the discs in the bin.

I was hesitent about Far Cry 3 because of the afore mentioned abomination, but I actually quite enjoyed it. Still a lot of repetition because of consoles but the main missions were reasonably good and required some thought and sneaky beaky skills to pull off. You had RPG style progression systems and some inovative features.

Far Cry 4 and 5 I didnt enjoy. Far Cry 3 clones, same thing different skin. Got bored with 4 after a few weeks and bored of 5 after a few hours, and too much video gameplay, ie where you are get a cutscene moment then have to follow on screen instructions to escape. I truly hate those - requires no skill or an IQ above 1 to complete.

So not keen on spending money on Far Cry 6 and looking at game play videos it seems its just another Far Cry 3 clone.

The second game was made by Ubi, who had taken over the franchise then. The game was, still is, a good open world game, though mainly made to see what they could do with their own Dunia engine. I'd still love to see it remade or remastered, it really needs two player coop.

From the third game onwards they found their working formula and kept finetuning it from there on. Still open world, toss in compelling villains, be given freedom to tackle almost everything the way you like it.

The latest one does away with a lot of the bloat that the series got over time, some of it will not be missed, like having to climb radio towers, hunt down animals to upgrade ammo capacity, the many ways to stealth kill someone and do something straight after depending on what button you press (toss grenade, use pistol, chain-attack more people in melee etc.) to things I do miss, like being able to hotswap arrows and ammo for guns in the field, instead of them now being an upgrade you need to select at a workbench. Removing most, if not all of the skills the previous games had is also good, a lot of it felt tacked on (said melee kills) or were just minor buffs to something. Removing human sidekicks is also an odd choice, but full coop integration makes up for that, the amigos do not, they're a very cumbersome and clunky experience still, with sometimes horrible pathfinding.

Also, new weekly challenges for the sprays, XP and money are up, most should be piss easy and in the bag.

I only use Guapo to score a single kill, making me eligible for the weekly community reward, but after that he's back into storage.

Only really annoying challenge this week is the death from above one, normally you can get these quite easily in the older games, but here not so much.
