What words are you not sure if your saying right? Or have recently learned have been saying incorrectly?

I still say Tuz-ee-nch for Tzeench although I believe it’s prounced chenk….

And I have been saying cust-owed-s but recently heard them called cust-owed-ees

Sorry if my phonetics aren’t very good

It's a vast galaxy where human speech has had millennia diverged drastically from standard Gothic. You can't pronounce stuff wrong.

I want to pronounce zoat as zo-at, but it's supposed to be like 'goat'.

Ever since great Khador debacle of Privateer Press (somehow not!Russia pronounces 'kha' as 'kay,' officially) I no longer care how writers pronounce things.

I go with what makes sense or sounds pleasing, rather than letting people 'officially' gouge out my ears with a spork.

Efficiency is the highest virtue.

I only speak Imperial High Gothic so as not to offend the God Emperor and bring the Inquisition upon myself.

But for real: Aedptus Ar- Bit -Ess.

People who say Ar- Bites drive me nuts.

In 40k, chances are that if a word ends in an S preceded by a vowel, the vowel is sounded.

eg: Astart - es vs A- starts.

Theres no official way to pronounce Tzeentch because Tzeentch is ever-changing.

For what its worth, common pronunciation around here is "zeen-ch"

The way I see it, there is no wrong pronunciation. I imagine high gothic has more variations in accents and dialects than any real world language given the size of the Imperium and the timescales involved.

That being said, generally I pronounce words that are recognisably pseudo Latin as if they were Latin (according to my limited knowledge from secondary school), so: ass-start-ess; cust-ode-ess; arr-bit-ess; vin-dick-are-ay
and so on.

The one that I found surprising was Abaddon. I’ve always said “abb-a-don” with stress equal across the syllables, stressing the syllables in a similar way to the city Aberdeen. Not at all how it is pronounced in the citadel painting videos. I remember the first time I heard Duncan say “a-baddon” with the stress on “bad” the so it rhymes with abandon.

The way Duncan says it is the usual Anglicized pronunciation ("He's a bad 'un"). But Abaddon is a Hebrew name and in the proper Hebrew pronunciation of Abaddon, the stress is indeed equal across the syllables. So you were right. If we're being really consistent with the linguistic originalism, though, we should pronounce the 'b' more like a 'v' (i.e. "Avaddon")...

A little bit of righteous anger now and then is good, actually. Don't trust a person who never gets angry.

I don’t like pronouncing Horus as whore-uss, but I believe that’s the proper way

In 40K it's indeed the proper way, but for the Egyptian God of the same and same latin spelling, it's actually pronounced "whore-oo".

Primaris is pronounced heretic, as is Cawl. At least, that is what the voice on my head says when I read these words or hear of them, whatever sounds emanate from the corrupted who dare speak of such.

I don't really accept the official pronunciation of "Guilliman" (insofar as I've been able to determine what the official pronunciation is).

I've generally had these pronunciations in my mind when reading/saying them.

Soar-or-itas
Cal-id-uss
Kull-ex-is

Now I know it's pronounced Ky-mera, but I say Chim-er-ah. That tank came out when I was very young, and all we had was WD - the Internet was't a thing yet - so we called it as it looked.

And yeah, I say Ab-bad-on, not Ab-adon.

Seriously though, I have the same reaction to people who say "Layz-Cannon" or "Layz-gun". It's Lahs!

Who's pronouncing Lasgun as Layzgun and why have they not been imprisoned.

1000 years of civil war against the people who say LassGun.

Edit: For a lot of stuff, the Japanese version ends up writing out a not-quite-phonetic version of the name. (It doesn't tell you anything about the stress pattern, but it's a bit shocking sometimes.)

I'm a simple man: Laser is pronounced lay-zer, it's a laser-gun, I drop the middle syllable, las-gun.

You guys don't do anything weird with the 'chain' part of chainsword, do you?

Favorite answer. (And yet I still have very strong opinions about the "right" way to say the names of fantasy space elf gods.)

ATTENTION
. Psychic tests are unfluffy. Your longing for AV is understandable but misguided. Your chapter doesn't need a separate codex. Doctrines should go away. Being a "troop" means nothing. This has been a cranky service announcement. You may now resume your regularly scheduled arguing.

You're probably one of those people who pronounces GIF with a soft 'g'.

I've got a couple, mainly words that I initially misread (and was too lazy to check) and then developed a habit of just saying them wrong in my head. Notable examples:

Primarchs becomes Pri - marks.
Omnissiah becomes Oh - mis - ah

Not 40k related, but AoS....

My AoS Slaves to Darkness tome has units such as Darkoath War Queen etc. The Darkoath are the chaos barbarian tribes. For the longest time I simply read it as Dar-ko-ath. 1 word, three syllables.
Why not? It's a fantasy world, Dar-ko-ath sounds like as plausible a name for a fantasy barbarian tribe as anything else....

And then some time back I was reading something & it was talking about how the tribes all swear various dark oaths to the various Chaos powers.
Oh. All they did was squish dark & oath together into 1 word. :/ Why didn't I spot that from the get go?
