So haven't been using my wet palette and have a opened packet of keep in mind proper wet palette paper which I've used about 15 sheet of for about a year and i last used a new sheet from it two weeks ago, if anyone is curious its a RGG palette i tested out a friends and it was perfect when it was working, but now for some reason the paper is not letting water through at all now I think this is perhaps it getting too dry where I had the opened packet of paper as it got to like 8% humidity I believe a few weeks back and may of affected it and caused it to shrink perhaps? But does anyone have any ideas of how to fix this without getting new paper, or does anyone recommend other wet palettes that do not let too much water through something similar to a RGG one or just let's a little bit more through?

Oh Canada!

Relative humidity shouldn't ruin your palette paper - it's being submerged/put into contact with a whole lot more water in use, after all.

Did you pre-soak your paper before applying it to the palette? If there isn't good contact between the paper and sponge, that can cause poor absorption. If not, try that - just soak the paper in a bowl or sink of water for a minute or so, until it stops wrinkling and curling. If the paint is drying out on the paper, you may need more water in your sponge during use.

Also check if the RGG paper is the same on both sides - some papers have a directional top/bottom.

I've never had this issue with my RGG palette. How are you noticing it's not letting water through it? I can usually leave paint on mine for a week and have it still usable depending on brand.

I am noticing it because usually when I have used it in the past small amounts of moisture permeates through the paper before I even have paint on it and when I touch the paper with a dry brush it gets wet, along with just touching the top side with a finger, it also just doesn't dilute the paint any at all even after 12 hours when it's sealed which is unusual as when the paper was "working" it always diluted the paint to be noticeable in a 12 hour time span.

Also it is actually discouraged by RGG Fire_Forever to wet both sides of the paper and I had not needed to previously, I also find that if I have to soak a paper on both sides that defeats the purpose of what I want from a wet palette which is controllable dilution of my paints to a degree, and when it is open the ability to prevent it from drying out without it becoming unusable in terms of being too thin, but I did try it and they using my finger wiped the excess water off that did not work, also usually (IE when I was using it more regularly) the paper sticks to the sponge with the water and I smooth out any bubbles I see, so I am thinking mainly now it getting so dry in the storage I had it in could of caused some kind of change in the structure of the paper most likely. I am basically not going to use that packet of "hydration sheets" anymore and most likely slowly use it up as a sheet for sculpting epoxy putties on from now on.

Thank you for your replies and suggestions.

Oh Canada!

No idea then - doesn't sound like RGG's paper works the way I'm used to a wet palette functioning. You could try the more standard siliconized baking parchment, see if that works for you perhaps. Riding the fine line between 'too dry' and 'too wet' while a wet palette is in use is impacted by your local relative humidity. Usually it's compensated for by adjusting how much water is in the palette / how airtight the storage is.

If the paper drying out is indeed the issue as you suspect, you could seal your dry papers in a container with a cup of water on the side until they rehydrate?

I had a bit of trouble getting the red grass pallet the correct amount wetness for the paper, I think it’s a bit of trail and error but I assumed all the paper was the same.

It’s been a while since I used it but I don’t remember wetting it on both sides you have to get the sponge wet and have a bit of residual water sitting around the sponge and then smooth the paper out on the sponge and it will naturally get a bit wet on top and then leave it soak through from the sponge. And wipe of any excess water from the top.

I think that’s what I was doing but it’s months since I used it. RGG have a video on how to use it I think that’s where I got this from
