I am converting a plain chaplain. Why you say? Because I found my Land Raider up in the attic and I want to try him out.

I am magnetising his backpack, so he can also have a jump pack for deep striking. Although a primaris on bike is better then a jump pack if you do not deep strike. And a terminator is better if you are just looking for deeps trike and not survivability.

But do I give him the power fist or the crosarium? Usually chaplains can only have the crosarium. But regular marine chaplain can have a power fist. Only 10 points. I play as SW, so the - 1 to hit does not botter me. But the 10 points does. Is s+2, ap+2 really worth a whole 10 points? If I use him for deepstriking or landraiding he will probably have the wulfen stone as his relic.

What do you think? I do not want to magnetize the hand.

Double check the data sheet because I'm 99% sure you swap his Bolt pistol for the powerfist, not the crozius. All chaplains take the crozius. The x2 strength can be interesting for making him more of threat to tougher targets. You can choose to allocate attacks with the crozius for when you don't want to suffer suffer -1 to hit and the powerfist may be overkill.

But if I want a Chaplain that fights well though, its hard to not give him the relic crozius and just chant mantra of strength to buff himself instead.

I’m stupidly traditional with my chaplain. You can take whatever shooty thing you want for range, but if a heretic needs smiting, you do it with your crozius. Those things aren’t the badge of office for nothing. I don’t care if the fist was free, without penalties, and sang a jaunty toon while it crushed people into chunky salsa and ripped open tanks. Use. The. Crozius.

Chaplains are probably the most 40k characters there are. They are over the top crazy. They hate you so much, they give everyone around them bonuses. As a group, they are historically some of the best sculpts overall. They ooze fluff.

Mechanically, I’ve generally been satisfied with bludgeoning things to death with a stick. They have a perfectly respectable weapon, why pay full price (no rebates) for another one?

I actually have the OG metal chaplain with the PF and Crozius, so I had the exact problem as you, especially since i usually like to play WYSIWYG. In the past, before 8th ed, having the versatility of having a harder hitting weapon was important, but now it's a bit of a tougher call given that both weapons are D2. I think the prevalence of ignoring AP1 or and S8 being a really important breaking point to wound certain units makes me think that its not terrible to drop 10 points on it, especially if you think he'll be stuck in before Assault Doctrine kicks in.

Lol it is indeed the pistol.

My problem with firstborn marines are that they die to a stiff breeze. They have 1 less wound, and can not transhuman in a pinch. If I am taking a chaplain it is mainly for the buffs. (The primaris bike chaplain has a whopping 7 wounds and T5. He is a hero. The terminator chaplain is 2+.) I am not sure about sinking 10 points on a fist. I will think on it.
