In 30k, a huge number of traitor marines had pretty "plain" or "normal" or "original" power armor.
By the 'modern' 40k times, the chaos legions have had ~10,000 years for their armor styles to evolve.
The most common sort of chaos marine armor we are shown is somewhat 'baroque' you might say, covered in spiky trim often of silver or gold.

For the majority of chaos marines: cool, new armor, no real issues there
For Alpha Legion: probably want to look similar to an imperial space marine as a common occurrence

Would Alpha Legion engaging in operations where they'd rather be identified as imperial marines than Alpha Legion, wear physically more standard power armor?
Or are they very often just using some sort of disguise field and their armor is all ornate like the rest of the chaos marines?

What armor would Alpha Legion wear when they are just hanging around their home base?

The Alpha Legion probably get away with wearing "Chaos armor" more than one would think.

There's a famous story in a White Dwarf somewhere in which a group of AL marines save a batch of imperial guard and are completely mistaken for loyalists, and on an even more extreme level, someone actually brought up a story only a few days ago in which a Necron force was confused for Marines by an entire planet without even trying. Any Alpha Legionnaires who were asked questions about their armor could probably make up some excuse about how they're part of an obscure Ultramarines successor chapter called the "Lernaeans" who wear spiky armor to symbolize their alliance with their homeworld's force of Imperial Knights or some nonsense and get away with it fine.

As I recall from an alpha legion novel they were rather fond of the later Models, mostly for the better sensors and tech inside.

thing is, compared to, say, the flesh tearers or some of the other loyalist chapters, the Alpha legion doesn't actaully look that bad, and remember that the overwhelming majority of imperial citizens have never met ANY space marine and have no baseline for what is normal for a marine, combined with the heavy repression of knowledge about chaos meaning they wont recognise chaotic iconography is they saw it anyway ("this? this 8 pointed star is a representation of the Eight Paths to Greatness, all of which flow from the God Emperor, here at the centre"), means that is takes a LOT to be outed as actual chaos marines, as opposed to "dark, edgy loyalist marines".

edit: obviously, things like visable mutations or demonic technology would be a give away, but thats things you can plan around not using or bringing for a stealth mission.

edit 2: for a purely straight answer to the question, the alpha legion would likely have had a mix of mk4 and mk5 armours during the hersey (mk4 was the "Best" type pre heresy, and horus ensured the traitors got most of it in the run up to istvann, and the mk5 was hodgepodge of expedient war production versions used by everyone to recoup losses), with a scattering of older marks, but wouldnt have had much access to mk 6 and later armours as they were developed during the later stages of the heresy and were only really used by the loyalists (as i understand it). modern chaos marine armours are basically mutated versions of these older marks.

To be a man in such times is to be one amongst untold billions. It is to live in the cruelest and most bloody regime imaginable. These are the tales of those times. Forget the power of technology and science, for so much has been forgotten, never to be relearned. Forget the promise of progress and understanding, for in the grim dark future there is only war. There is no peace amongst the stars, only an eternity of carnage and slaughter, and the laughter of thirsting gods.

The Alpha Legion were one of the few Legions to have access to large amounts of Mk6 prior to the Heresy actually.
Mk7 was the only armour not available to all the Legions during the Heresy, with only the Blood Angels, Fists and Scars getting small amounts during the Siege.

Well, it’s really going to depend on your own head canon.

Ultimately, nobody outside of Space Marine forces, the Inquisition and Ad Mech probably even knows there are different Mks of Power Armour, let alone be able to say which is which or that a preponderance of say, Mk4 might be suspicious.

And there’s nothing to stop your AL force being uniformally Mk7 or even Mk8 - they just took pains to acquire it. It may have taken them a while, but it’s entirely doable.

It’s even entirely possible AL do have Primaris among their number, because of what they do. Not just operatives within enemy forces, but there’s really very little to stop a force of them pretending to be a Loyalist Chapter in dire need of reinforcement.

If I recall my HH knowledge correctly, at the onset of the Heresy, aside from the Raven Guard, they had used the new Corvus armour more than anyone else.

In 40k? You could really go with anything. I would assume they would wear whatever the mission required, Chaos armour to intimidate vs normal armour to infiltrate. Ect...

Also what Mad Doc said about Primaris, I could completely see that from a lore perspective.

Waiting for my shill money from Spiral Arm Studios

Alpha Legion will also have greater access to stolen power armor than most traitors too, given that they operate in real space behind Imperial lines. So really anything goes with them. They'd be yoinking stuff meant for loyalists all the time.

I would say each Splinter would be different. That's why we see some AL all spikey and some that are low key.
