Hi everyone! It has been about maybe 25 years since I have last played Warhammer 40K or Fantasy, and I recently got back into it. The last edition I played was 3rd, or maybe 4th edition - I totally forgot, its been so long.
I still have a few metal Terminators and I realised I had an unpainted land raider and I decided to start 9th edition with the Deathwing. Id love to get some feedback on this Army list, since I am starting again from scratch as all the core rules are super different from when I last looked at rule book.
Even though I am a returning player, don't go easy on me - I used to be a tournament player as a kid, and I hope to get straightforward feedback. Please and Thank You.

Welcome back! A lot has changed since 3rd Ed...

Deathwing are in a good spot right now. I think you have the bones of a good list there with two Deathwing Squads for Obsec and the Twin-Las Dreadnought to support. I really enjoy Deathwing Knights and use them in my lists, but you will find that many pass them by and go with Thunderhammer/Stormshield Terminators for the Obsec. I have found, though, that Deathwing Knights can kill anything in melee and do not need a character to babysit them since they hit on 2s (the DW Terminators with Thunderhammers hit on 4s). DW Knights also have a nasty Strat to take down big monsters/vehicles. I take them!

I might go with Belial instead of the Chapter Master in Terminator Armour to save on CPs. Certainly not a deal-breaker. You have picked two good powers for your Librarian to support your Terminators. I use Ezekiel to get a third power for options, but you do lose out the ability to teleport.

I think the Land Raider Crusader is a wonderful model but also a gift to your enemy. Many opponents will find killing it rather easy to do (Drukhari etc). Tables are a bit smaller these days, and I find that I can march my Deathwing into combat by Turn 2 or teleport in on Turn 2 and hope for a good charge.

Those 310 points could allow you to take a very useful Deathwing Apothcary (or a Ravenwing one if you are feeling cheeky) and bulk out one of your Deathwing Squads to 10 (which could then combat squad if you need to).

I am not sure that you need the five-man Deathwing Command Squad. Two squads of two would allow you to protect both characters on independent tasks; or perform actions and hold objectives (not obsec but they get get the job done) or be in table quarters etc. A Deathwing Ancient with the Banner of Repentance (-1 damage to a DW squad) is also very useful.

Come on over to the Dark Angels Tactics thread!

All you have to do is fire three rounds a minute, and stand

Hello, I've been playing Deathwing as well. Personally I've found shields unnecessary. My current got to list is 3 10 man Deathwing squads with 2 cyclone. Then one 10 man relic squad. Characters are Belial, Chaplain, and Apothecary.

I'm on a 23 game winning streak. Though I must add that I haven't played in any tournaments and I've yet to play Drukhari. I have beaten admech once and Grey Knights twice. Like already mentioned Land Raiders are too easily killed. I've yet to try any Dreads, I'm still enjoying fielding all terminators.

Thank you both for the advice. This has been helpful and it's nice to know that I still haven't lost the touch of building an army list.

I just have a few more terminators to paint and Im done. But I will definitely rethink taking a Land Raider Crusader on the field. When I last played, transports were a big thing, so its a really different feeling to know that in 9th, terminators can slog across a table.

Again, thanks for the feedback - it has been extremely helpful as I get my head around the new rules available now.

yes you have an excellent start but land raiders for the most part arent very good. and you would do well not to take any of them, they are big targets that can die to lots of real problematic things in the game. things the terminators dont have problems shrugging off.

also the new relic terminators are really good if you want to add more terminators to your lot. reaper autocannon, lots of lightning claw attacks, cheaper then normal terminators, they are an excellent unit.

the apothecary is a good choice, and the deathwing ancient is also a very good choice, both make it extra tough to drag your bone colored tanks down

DA army: 3500pts,
admech army: 600pts
ravenguard: 565 pts

Leonil,

My first army was DW in 4e (3e codex); a lot of the Space Hulk termies.

I have played in tourneys steadily since 5e, branching out to Chaos, Tau & all the elvish flavors.

Regarding HQs, the Chapter Master is okay, but there are better:

Currently, the Talon Master, a Land Speeder character, is a great unit, so if you have one, maybe break off one guy's an arm, attach a power sword. A relic called Arbiter's Gaze allows shooting overwatch on BS2. It's awesome. And because it's a character, it adheres to those character targeting rules.

Got an apothecary? They're way better than they have ever been.

The Ravenwing champ has a 'swings first' mechanism (against characters), which is becoming very important in 9e, as there's a wych cult (Cult of Strife) which fight first in h2h and other units in the game. Plus, Ravenwing has a shenanigan (The Hunt) that allows them to get Move before Turn 1, near-guaranteeing an opportunity for a Turn 1, 9" charge, of which the bike then bounces out of combat before the opponent can swing (forgot what that is).

If you decide to go with some more characters, give them the BladeGuard / VeteranGuard dudes, which act as body guards, taking shooting if they're within' 3". The apothecary buffing them makes a rock solid small, Death Star. Their Storm Shields laugh at -1 AP wounding.

There's a new dreadnaught, the Space Marine Contemptor, with Volkite guns, which has a lot of shooting which seems to be a tourney standard (I'm not buying any) as it pours out a lot of shooting. I'm looking to play SM again, but I don't wanna buy two or three of those.

This edition, and 7e & 8e too, is constantly changing, FAQs quarterly, revised rule booklets for points, etc. Be sure to check for the 2021 GT mission pack, revised Points booklet, the 2 new (this week) 2022 GT missions that GW has available for download. Oddly, I could only find it on BellofLostSouls. It's the internet's fault, but it's a good thing as GW has been responding to feedback to alter and fix, as soon as possible, imbalances and such in the game.

Play!

You don't have to go with all the new stuff to have fun with Deathwing right now.

One thing you will have to change is your cyclone loadout. You can't take it with the thunder hammer/storm shield currently, it has to have a stormbolter. besides, you want your storm shield guys tanking saves so don't lose an expensive cyclone to do that.

For fun I'd keep the Crusader in the list, but drop the second LR for more terminators.

You will definitely want a Deathwing Apothecary, no matter what.

I'd also alter your HQs. Captain with sword and SB is cool, but no Chapter Master, that belongs to Azrael. Same with Librarian, Ezekiel is the Chief Librarian.

I'd also look at Deathwing Knights, yes they are not obsec but they hit like a truck and won't miss as much as your Thunder hammer guys.

I'd lose the Heavenfall Blade on terminator sgt. Not really worth the relic IMHO, but there are worse places to drop CPs.

Good time to be a Deathwing player
