I have lots and lots of unpainted & unbased marines and it is becoming daunting on deciding where to start. So I thought I would start with a competent 1000pt list and get started painting those models. Here it goes:

++ Battalion Detachment 0CP (Imperium - Adeptus Astartes) [48 PL, 1,000pts, 6CP] ++

+ HQ +

Captain [5 PL, 90pts]: Master-crafted boltgun, Power sword, Warlord

Chaplain [6 PL, 115pts]: Jump Pack, Litany of Hate, Power fist

+ Troops +

Assault Intercessor Squad [5 PL, 95pts]
. 4x Assault Intercessor: 4x Astartes Chainsword, 4x Frag & Krak grenades, 4x Heavy Bolt Pistol
. Assault Intercessor Sgt: Astartes Chainsword, Heavy Bolt Pistol

Intercessor Squad [5 PL, 100pts]: Bolt rifle
. 4x Intercessor: 4x Bolt pistol, 4x Frag & Krak grenades
. Intercessor Sergeant

Intercessor Squad [5 PL, 100pts]: Bolt rifle
. 4x Intercessor: 4x Bolt pistol, 4x Frag & Krak grenades
. Intercessor Sergeant

+ Elites +

Vanguard Veteran Squad [7 PL, 150pts]: Jump Pack
. Vanguard Veteran: Power sword, Storm shield
. Vanguard Veteran: Power axe, Storm shield
. Vanguard Veteran: Power sword, Storm shield
. Vanguard Veteran: Power fist, Storm shield
. Vanguard Veteran Sergeant: Bolt pistol, Power sword

+ Fast Attack +

Inceptor Squad [7 PL, 180pts]: 2x Inceptor, Inceptor Sergeant, Plasma Exterminator x2

+ Heavy Support +

Devastator Squad [8 PL, 170pts]: Armorium Cherub
. Devastator Marine Sergeant: Bolt pistol, Boltgun
. Devastator Marine w/Heavy Weapon: Multi-melta
. Devastator Marine w/Heavy Weapon: Multi-melta
. Devastator Marine w/Heavy Weapon: Multi-melta
. Devastator Marine w/Heavy Weapon: Lascannon

++ Total: [48 PL, 1,000pts, 6CP] ++

I think this list has a good amount of Troops, with 3 strong Primaris units, a good amount of attack going forward with the Chaplain and Vanguards supported by Inceptors. There is some good tank-hunting ability with the Devastators but somehow I feel like they don’t fit in the list and there may well be a better way to spend 170pts?

I think this is a pretty good list, and you would likely do fine with it as-is. But since you asked for suggestions, here are a few things that I think might help.

For 1000 points you really do not need a Battalion detachment. You would really be just fine with a Patrol. That way you could save a lot of points that you are spending on your 3 troops choices and your 2nd HQ. Both your HQs are good, but I'd just say pick one.

Concerning Devastators most people run Devastators with a Drop Pod if they are going to run them at all. It does make them more expensive but it basically guarantees them LOS and range to your opponents most threatening unit on turn 2, and you're ready to melta it to death.

For 170 points you could instead have 3 eradicators with Heavy Melta rifles and 20 points left to spend somewhere else. Or if you wiggled a bit to get a few more points available for 180 you could have 3 attack bikes with multi-meltas. I think either of these choices would be stronger than no-drop-pod devastators.

If you want to let me know what chapter or chapter traits you are using maybe I could have a little more specific advice.

Hi, thanks for you reply.

Are two Troops choices enough? If you assume one is for squatting home objective, that leaves just the one outfield.

I have also removed the captain given that most units will by out or range of his buffs, thus the Chaplain should be a more effective Buff. I have added a multi-melta bike (i just have the 1), with the few pts left i’ve filled out one of the intercessor squads, what do you think?

In terms of Chapter and traits, i am thinking of a successor chapter with some assault-oriented buffs, such as 2 from: Born Heroes, Tactical Withdrawal, Warded & Whirlwind of Rage.

+ HQ +

Chaplain [6 PL, 115pts]: Jump Pack, Litany of Hate, Power fist, Warlord

+ Troops +

Assault Intercessor Squad [5 PL, 95pts]

. 7x Intercessor: 7x Bolt pistol, 7x Frag & Krak grenades
. Intercessor Sergeant

I play a lot of my games in the 1k bracket and one thing I've noticed is that not everyone brings enough heavy stuff for a large commitment to heavy weapons to be worth it. Say someone brings a swarm army against you, your Melta's aren't going to do all that much.

In and of itself, I don't think a unit of Devastators is a bad idea, however, I think the commitment of the Drop Pod is. In a 2k point game, I would totally agree that a Drop Pod is the way to go, but you are investing a much greater percentage of your points in committing to their Deep Strike when it won't be effective in every game.

Rather, I'd cut the Drop Pod and one of the Intercessors to make a unit of 10 and use those extra bodies to cover them and give them some extra firepower. In addition, you can then combat Squad them out for more flexibility. Speaking of which, I'd recommend 2 Lascannons, have that unit sit and hold the backfield and then you can move the two Melta's up. With your Attack Bike and power fists, I don't think you'll have any issues with armor.

If you change one Melta to a Lascannon that would give you 5 extra points, cutting your Intercessor Squad down to 5 would then give you 25 (and protect against Auto 3's on Plasma Cannons) and you could use that to make your Chaplain a Master of Sanctity to make him much more flighty. He gets and additional litany and can recite two per turn, his unique Warlord trait makes his Litanies inspiring on a 2+, and his relic prevents anyone from re-rolling attacks against him, and gives some LD debuffs to enemies.

Another trait to consider is Hungry for Battle. Adding one to your charge. However, if you plan of Deep striking your Chaplain and Vets, just taking Canticle of Hate to make it 7" would likely work better. (or just not Deep Striking at all since the 1k tables are pretty small so it's not usually necessary.)
