It seems to me it's becoming more and more mainstream, ironically, to declare oneself a dyed-in-the-wool geek than ever before. GW must be loving the publicity.

It's a follow-on from Henry's interview on the Graham Norton Show the other day.
More people talking about WH, not Henry himself in this one.

Still, it's more good exposure.

If Henry Cavill doesn't end up voicing a character in any TWW3 content then GW/CA's marketing departments need to be fired.

There’s also an article in fashion mag The Face

https://theface.com/culture/warhammer-games-workshop-nottingham-gaming-company

Not about Mr Cavill (sorry, I always feel uncomfortable using first names if I don’t know the person. Just me being me) as such, but GW’s “golden age” during the pandemic.

A non-condescending BBC article about Warhammer? Impossible I say!
Honestly though, that Norton segement was a joke, glad to see positive and accurate articles on the hobby for once.

Helluva hobby to pick up during it.

Only time will tell if it remains attractive in the longer term of course.

Norton does generally gently take the piss out of his guests though, I don't think his interview with Cavill was anything out of the ordinary

I've yet to watch up but I would like to think it's a step up from his C4 chat show days where Norton used to interview people with a love of rubbing themselves with balloons for their jollies. And that was a tame episode.

In Norton’s defence, his ribbing is always good natured.

And yeah. I remember his channel 4 show. Did you see the one where a “zero g enthusiast” had Elton John serenade him with Rocket Man?

I predict people picked up the hobby thinking it sounds cool and satisfies the itch of crafting and painting along with a side dose of armchair quarterbacking. When people truely start getting out and into the game stores and see/smell the other customers (because I have met very few who look like Mr. Cavill, more look like the beasts from the Witcher), I think there might be a dramatic drop off of new players .

Lets face it, it wasn't that long ago that computer games were the domain of the geeky only; and even then the affluent geek.

Fastforward to today and COD and Battlefield and all those games are mainstream where its more abnormal if you've not played them or heard of them than if you have.

And a huge part of that is purely marketing. It's not that modern shooters are in any way "more" than shooters of the past like Unreal Tournament; its that there's a VAST amount of marketing, awareness, making it "cool" and such all behind it.

TV and other media marketing is insanely powerful.

I would also say D&D being insanely popular right at the minute has had a sideways effect on anything tabletop related.

It wasn't a bad interview really, it was just a bit of honest piss taking.

Indeed DnD and Larping have really taken off in the last 10 years or so and grown in popularity. Super Geeky hobbies like that do have a side effect of bringing others up as well.

LARP is bloody good exercise. And a lot of fun!

It’s only really expensive to get set up. Once you’ve got some kit and weapons, with care they’ll last you a fair while.

Indeed. Its a golden age of consumption for gw. Not a golden age for the miniature wargaming hobby. These dollies dont play themselves and without that key element, its just a masturbatory exercise in wishful thinking, without long term sustainability. So as much as gw and other sectors of the hobby industry are profiting from this pandemic, they better pray that people pull their collective heads out of their asses and take the plague seriously before such seemingly discretionary income dries up and instead becomes part of essential upkeep for survival.

Actually…GW has always been a model company first and a game company far second. Most of their toys never see a table, but rather a shelf. It’s not a new thing it’s been going on since the beginning.

Given how Tom Holland jumped in at the end, I think the view that Norton's comments were making things very awkward towards the end of that segment wouldn't be uncommon.

Kinda wish Henry had turned the tables and asked Norton about his hobbies - if any - but I suspect he's too much of a gentleman for that.

Why? Because he made fun of wargamers/hobbyists? He's a comedian. That's his job. Besides, nothing he said was false. You should be able to laugh at yourself.

Or ask "So, I wargame" while cracking walnut shells with his biceps and generally pointing out how many people of all sexes find him gosh darn attractive.

Or even better "My Royal Marine Commando brother and many of his fellow Royals also wargame. Want to joke about them?"

Then again, it is Norton's job to wind up/ mickey take guests. Some join in with gusto. Will Smith for example.

It's really unfortunate, instead of the "Huehuehue nerdy stuff, really, lulz?" crap they could have explored it with Henry a little bit. It saddens me that we still have this issue where people feel they need to insult others because of their differences. That same crap that made people like the Big Bang Theory which is just tons of tropes making fun of nerd communities.

Isn't Big Band Theory mostly watched by nerds though? Any community should laugh when someone makes good fun of them. Nerd communities are no exception.

Big Bang Theory I think started laughing at nerd culture, but quickly ended up laughing at Sheldon or laughing at characters imagining what Sheldon would do/had done.

In general once you remove him as a character almost all the comical aspects leave with him. Which makes it less about geek culture and more about one specific character.

If I was cynical I'd point out how Cavill always hyped up his 'geeky' side when a new season of The Witcher is coming out. I remember last time there was barely any hype about it until "Omg omg omg he has geeky hobbies JUST LIKE ME!!! Omg omg I love anything with Cavill in it now!!!"

But I'd only say that if I was cynical of course.

Maybe, but once Amy and Bernadette got added it more or less became stock formula sitcom with the nerd references being broader pop culture stuff that wouldn't need explaining to a mainstream audience

There's nothing cynical about it. It's reasonable to assume that this is at least in part marketing for his particular niche of acting roles, but that doesn't make it any worse for us as a community. We can only profit from large, handsome chad actors normalizing our hobby.

The success of Big Bang Theory stems entirely from portraying geniuses as imbeciles so actual imbeciles feel better about themselves.
