This month was the open round. We have a wide assortment of entries to vote for!

As always, feel free to vote for as many entries as you feel deserve recognition, and for any reason, be that the quality of the paintjob or modeling, the effort on show, or anything else you think deserves a nod. You're also very welcome to leave some feedback for the entrants, and many of the images link through to the Dakka gallery, so throw them a vote there as well if you fancy. The poll will run for 5 days.

In no particular order

Balloon dog: a very lively bust with texture as well as color making this really stand out as an entry. The beard and hair seem a bit bland compared to the skin but overall still a fantastic job.

Dv8: smooth blends, great effects, and tentacles! The glow on the hands is nice though somethings off about the color towards the light source. Maybe needs flourescent paint? Not sure.

Paradigm: lovely beat up marine. It's not every day I get to vote on a blueberry but I certainly will for you. Could use some edge highlighting but I only say that cuz I can't find anything else to try and be constructive about.

I'd have to say that yours was my favorite this month, Freya. It was a very cool take on the classic Space Wolves scheme.

Thank you! I'm glad it turned out well.

Your model was actually one I think I would struggle with and I applaud that you chose it.

White and red are both very difficult colors for different reasons. White is hard to paint as you no doubt know. And red is hard to photograph well. Both in one single mini would certainly be a challenge for most mini painters.

You chose a hard one and did a lot right with it. The gloss for the liquid was a nice touch. I'm hoping to see you continuing on this friendly competition.

Good work lads!
Very inspirational

DV8 crushed it as usual.

I liked the redwall-esk entries, the mouse ninja and the witchhunter with witches.

Thank you for the kind words of encouragement. I use a light box for my photography which really helps me get nice clear pictures. Painting the Sanguinary Priest was a lot fun as I like detail work, and doing the Chalice of Blood was just a matter of applying one thick coat of Blood for the Blood God paint.

I look forward to seeing more of your work as well. Keep at it!

Great job everyone!

A few comments:

Freya: This is my absolute favorite from all of your entries, awesome as they have been. From the flavor to the details, top notch!

Mr Nobody: I'm a sucker for a good DKoK model. I like the lighter color scheme on this guy, as I'm used to seeing them in dark grey (including mine).
The base could however do with a little more detail in my opinion, but that's just nitpicking.

Maharg: I like the clean colors and the subtle rust on these guys. The classic stripes in their pants really caught my eye!

See you all in the next challenge!
And happy hobby year 2022 to everyone!

Nice Job Everyone!
My favorites in no particular order this month are:

Mothsniper - I've been obsessing over trying to increase the amount of contrast in my minis lately and these 'nids prove why it's worth it to do so; the darks give them the grimdark alien effect and the lighter colors make them pop. I like that the terrain covers the bases completely too, it makes them more 3D and less statue-like.

Mr. Nobody - In contrast to Mothsnipers, yours is very statue-like, but for this mini it works very well. Nice clean paintjob and very atmospheric.

theCrowe - just so much character in these, and the fact that you sculpted them is the icing on the cake.

Ezki - Proppa Orky, solid weathering, and I like that the gunner looks like he can barely see what he's shooting at which for orks is of course besides the point. Nice conversion, nice paintjob.

Maharg - you brought out all the detail without obscuring any or making them too fussy. This is just a solid entry. Plus, stripey pants gets a vote every time.

MobileSuitRandom - impressive execution on an impressive mini, the paint job really does this epic character justice.

If you'll pardon the shameful self-promotion, I finally finished my Squighog Boys and mounted them to the Squighogs I painted for last month's competition. Come on folks, bit quiet here for such a nice round? Guess it's my turn for a comment marathon, then:

KidCthulhu - I like how very 'urban' these look, with the basing and the somehow regal colours! Feel more like corrupted gentry than br00tal barbarians from the wastes, interesting.

Turaxa - Given my Dakka account name I ... very much approve of this mighty war machine.

Pariah Press - One of my favourites this round, such characterful minis & the no-nonsense paintjob both ties them together and stresses their individual personalities!

Freya - Top blending & colour choices here, deserved win! Particularily like how distinct the different bluish/purplish materials work out.

Nevelon - Those guys really mean business, don't they. Good clean paintjob and very effective snow basing!

Mothsniper - Super interesing colour choices & bases, very convincing in their alien-ness, especially the blue glow & the Ravener's carapace

Mr Nobody - That's just glorious - heroic with bright & clean colours while still subtly grimdark, what with the nasty claws & mud base etc

the_balloon_dog - This one has lived & seen things, obviously - great skin colours & the downcast eyes add to the atmosphere

DV8 - great as usual, actually the skin on the tentacles stealing the show from 'Stephen' himself, somehow

JoshInJapan - Now these are fun minis - and a fitting retro colour scheme but with 'modern' effects!

Captain Brown - Getting major 2000AD vibes ... so many (disturbing) details to find here

ShadowsAndDust - Nice classic colours and some good use of gloss/blood effects! Good base, too.

theCrowe - I love those, so adorable! Even though the Witch Hunter is maybe not *really* adorable, the eyes look like they're silently judging me, hmm

Ezki - wrote in your other thread already, the weathering & materiality is perfect!

Flinty - Interesting model & made even more interesting through the OSL. Wonder how this would look with a different, darker lighting setup for the photo, but might be difficult to pull of without losing detail ...

E3DD - I like the bright cartoony colours in contrast with the moody alien bases - the orange/white armour makes it look even a bit more like the strange cargo cult outfits from Horizon Zero Dawn

ms07b3 - That face is just sooo good. Really captures the slightly comical earnestness of Ultramarines!

darktt - Great conversions & great attention to different textures and materials, classic grotesque Chaos like straight from the RT era ^^

Jamie Shred - strange, interesting mini, you captured the brutality very well through the weathering on the various metals

Viterbi - I like how you add extra attention for detail & atmosphere (the blood and magazines) to the clear cartoon paint schemes! Great terrain, too.

Paradigm - Ooooh yes, peak grimdark. He looks as he's been wading 24/7 through muck and corpses, which is exactly what I'm envisioning him to do as soon as SM2 comes out

Vejut - I always think you must have the most fun mini collection on all Dakka, no exception here ^^ Like the transitions between bluish fur and pink skin a lot.

Midget Gems - Heh! Fittingliy gaudy scheme for a wacky mini. I like the darker squig skin + green Christmas lights cable much more than the GW colours.

Gulgog TufToof - checked out your finished Boys, that's a really clever, striking colour scheme with the gold on blue & white!

Maharg - already wrote in the other thread, great skin tones and great stripey pants ^^

DJJazzyJeff - That's some interesing OSL and great slime here, making him look both very nasty and very powerful, with the ominous lighting from below

MobileSuitRandom - This was a strange experience, spent hours and hours painting & being sure that she's a total mess, then spent 15 minutes adding some off-colour shading and washes and suddenly everything seemed to make sense, huh. Thanks for the votes!

I guess it’s been 5 days Time for some winners:

Coming in third with 18 votes is Mr. Nobody’s Death Rider of Krieg. Lovely smooth clean colors. You can tell he’s in charge, as he doesn’t have mud all over him!

Spoiler:

Second place goes to a classic car, mekshop style. It’s rusted and ramshakle, but pulls in to win the silver. Ezki's Kustom Boosta Blasta!

Spoiler:

And a suitably icy win for this mid-winter’s contest, Freya’s Wold lord!

Spoiler:

Grats to the winnners, and everyone who entered. 2021 was an amazing year for everyone. Good work all around, both in this contest and all the other ones. So much joy in seeing everyone grow as painters.

Let’s all keep painting our best in 2022!

Congrats to the winners, very deserving miniatures!

And thanks MobileSuitRandom for the Feedback! The MCP bases always look a little bland and I don't want to paint those little bottles and cans they provide with the bases So blood and posters it is
