So now that the new Adeptus Custodes codex is out do all the Stratagems from 8th supplements go away, for instance "Superior Fire Patterns" from War of the Spider?

Usually, when a new codex comes out, the old codex gets invalidated. According to this whc article psychic awakening books are a codex update, therefore they are also invalidated by a new codex.

The Psychic Awakening books act as a codex update for your armies.

In practice, it would need to be judged on a case-by-case basis since GW has been absolutely terrible at advising which supplements should still be valid and which should not. You can't simply say that all supplements are automatically invalidated when a new codex comes out - after all, we have supplements available now that were released just before their army's codex was.

For example, War Zone Charadon Act I was released just before or around about the same time as Codex: AdMech and Codex: Drukhari, but has supplements for both. It was clearly supposed to be released after them but the release schedule got messed up by supply issues, so you'd be hard pressed to find anyone who believed that those supplements shouldn't work.

The WarCom article could be considered a fair source on working out intention behind the publication, but I don't think it can be considered a rules source (I shouldn't have to memorise thousands of unindexed blog articles to work out if something is legal or not!).

There is also no rules source which invalidates an old codex when a new codex comes out.

Not strictly true, IIRC there was a note in Codex: Daemonhunters that invalidated the old Codex: Assassins

But yes, it ultimately comes down to social contract and which rules you and your opponent (or event organiser) decide to use. My way of approaching it is that if it's currently available from the GW website and is not explicitly invalidated (e.g. the SM supplements for 8th), then it's fair game.

Yep, and codex craft worlds was explicitly invalidated.other than those, gw does not say "this isn't valid any longer".

Then you get the awkward situation of having supplements that have multiple factions, and one of those factions getting a new codex, potentially invalidating that section of the book. A good example was Saga of the Beast. Has both Space Wolf and Ork contents. Codex: Space Wolf was replaced by Codex: Space Marine + the Space Wolf supplement. GW had initially FAQ'd that the SW half was invalid, but then removed the FAQ for some reason, all while the Ork half was still valid and being sold in their online store.

Then you have rules content from things like White Dwarf, Blackstone Fortress, etc, etc.

It would be nice if GW had a compendium of what they consider current and valid documents / rules sources.

Yeah. Depends.

Supplements Raven Guard, White Scars, Ultramarines, Iron Hands, Imperial Fists and Salamanders were all written for the old 8th Ed. 2.0 Space Marine Codex and are now legal and adapted with a few FAQ to the 9th Ed. Space Marines Codex.

What happens is that they supplement themselves to the shelf or trash bin.

It Depends. Sometimes GW writes the new codex with the supplement in mind (or writes the supplement with the new codex in mind depending on timing - think Chapter Supplements). Sometimes they just errata the whole thing to chunk them together as best as they can to prolong the shelf life of the supplement - often the Warzone or one-off supplements. Imperium Nihilus warzone books are an example of both - the new codex for my UM reworked a lot from that book, but not all so a few bits here and there are still valid. Most of the time you have to check the FAQ pages.

My WHFB armies were Bretonians and Tomb Kings.
