Hello!

I played 40k from 4th-7th and was wondering what you would suggest I purchase or look at to get back into the hobby?

I would love to play Chaos Knights but I hear rumours that they are getting a new codex?

Are Chaos Knights viable as their own solo army?

Are allies still similar? I did not like how versatile the allies were in 6th and 7th.

I really like competitive 40k but would like to change to be more of a hobbyist. Do you think Chaos Knights would fill this role?

Thank you, and any advice as to where to start/look would be greatly appreciated!

The last Chaos Knights book came out over two years ago, which is pretty ancient by current GW standards. I haven't heard that their new codex is imminent but that doesn't necessarily mean that it isn't.

Shouldn't stop you getting some models though, especially if you plan to magnetize. Also if you plan to not play competitively does it really matter if your models don't have the optimal loadout?

GW have been trying to discourage allies lately, by making armies who do ally lose certain bonuses. It can still be done, but I don't think it's the same free for all as it was back in 7th edition.

I try to stay away from Knights (both Imperial and Chaos), simply because I'm one of those fuddy duddies who thinks such models should have remained in 6mm scale. So I can't really help with your other questions.

Ok thanks!

By not competitively I still want to have a good army that will be fun to play (and not just get tables) it's just that I don't want to codex hop, min/max, bring in tons of allies, etc. I still want to play my army to the best of their ability to a degree.

I like trying all of the cool 'codex specific' items that you would never see anywhere else. Like with old Khorne Daemonkin trying all of the obtuse and cool weapons and abilities. I don't know if this still exists in 40k proper.

From my understanding, Chaos Knights work about as well as Imperial knights. Essentially, not that great, though a few extra changes have helped a bit. No word of a codex soon either. They suffer from an older codex and the current 9th ed structure (namely scoring and holding objectives) not playing well with knights.

However, Chaos is in one of the better positions for allying, as they have the least to lose by doing so as it currently stands. Now, with the current rules update, you will lose Objective Secured (ignore all enemy models in regards to holding an Objective unless they have another unit with Objective secured) on your knights, so be aware. However, mixing in some Death Guard Poxwalkers, using Thousand Sons Tszaangors/cultists, or other such mass-body nits can provide some much needed numbers. So if you find yourself lacking, you can mix in some other armies in to shore up your issues.

Magnetize, you're likely to see stat changes in the next codex, which might make some Knight builds better/worse. It's impossible to predict the meta 6 months in advance because of constant point changes, most armies are pretty good the day their codex is released.

Pure Knights are not good for learning the game, I wouldn't want to play them in less than 1000 pts and they don't really make sense in less than 2000 points in my opinion.

There are janky relics, Stratagems and warlord traits you can play around with.

Loads of people playing Chaos Knights mono-lists

You're right they're due a new codex - but that could be any time later this year.

The 8th edition codex is still valid, and its FAQ and the Balance Dataslate available to download free from the Warhammer website bring it up to date with 9th edition in the meantime:

In 9th edition, lists with several titanic knights and a load of war dogs seem popular at the moment.

There will be a new Chaos Knights secondary objective in next month's White Dwarf too I believe.

That’s a good point, I will endeavour to do so!

I have a Mars 2 Pro and have been printing off bits and such for Chaos upgrades

I have a moral problem in regard to printing whole units, but adding lots of bits and decorations has been fun!
