Because apparently, when the company you're trying to partner with is rapidly driving itself into a wall the only solution is to just buy the car out from under them. Throw in the Bethesda purchase, and Microsoft is now on track to become the Disney of video games. The only companies that can possibly come close to competing are Sony and Tencent.

I predict this purchase will eventually, one day, lead to Microsoft being broken up via anti-monopoly legislation, etc. No doubt this purchase comes with an intent towards exclusivity on Xbox and PC in an effort to snuff out competition from Sony and others.

Good, Activision-Blizzard have been a mess for a while, so hopefully Microsoft can clean house and give them a direction.

That would require the US laws be applied for once...
Or anti trust laws in general...

This would in effect give Microsoft a near ironclad hold on NA based AAA game development.

Blizzard is no longer capable of producing original video games. Everything is purely derivative or possesses so many flaws it becomes mediocre.
Microsoft is acquiring the remains of a company, this is just a new entry into an elephant graveyard. There is value in the IP, which will continue to be exploited.
But it's not like they are acquiring talent. Anyone with a brain left a long time ago.

While Bethesda and Activision/Blizzard are large companies that still doesn't remotely come to monopoly levels of industry control.
It is also a bit odd to see lamenting for Sony not getting some titles as exclusives while sitting on piles of their own exclusives.
Yeah they are pretty much just buying the IP.

Microsoft has been buying a lot of rotten apples lately. Hopefully they're able to restore the seeds of once great games from muck and clean up all the rot. Pretty much everything they've bought is companies I just don't buy from anymore.

Well, at least MS isn't likely to pull a 'don't you have phones?' moment.
Be interesting to see someone do something with the properties, instead of letting them languish for a decade or more at a time.
Wouldn't mind a single player RPG in any Diablo/Craft verse.
--
Though I have to say, the MS article title for this purchase is hilarious:
Microsoft to acquire Activision Blizzard to bring the joy and community of gaming to everyone, across every device
https://news.microsoft.com/2022/01/18/microsoft-to-acquire-activision-blizzard-to-bring-the-joy-and-community-of-gaming-to-everyone-across-every-device/
And while I hope they shove Bobby Kotick out the door along with the rest of their bad actors, I shudder to think how big of a 'reward' he going to get for this sale.

Dragon Quest Online (Japan only) is getting a version for the Switch that is Dragon Quest Offline. Instead of other players in your party they are going to be computer controlled NPCs, as well as a few other modifications to deal with the transition from an online multiplayer to an offline single player game.
Point being if Dragon Quest can do it they should be able to do it as well.

Don't know how true it is, but I saw it posted elsewhere that if Kotick is out as CEO due to a change of ownership, his compensation package is something like $290 MILLION.

I don't think it is that bad at all. We still have EA and several other major developers over here.
Xbox is very anti exclusivity right now. They are trying to push their services to more platforms. They want to have an Xbox service on Playstation and Nintendo products in the end.

I’m not sure we will see full exclusivity from this, if it even goes ahead.
See, every Console sold is, to the best of my admittedly limited knowledge, sold at a loss. The idea being you make your money on software sales etc.
I can see it being in MS’s interest to release across all platforms. Let Nintendo and Sony etc take the console hit, and just Hoover up as much of the software money as possible.

That has not been Microsofts plan so far. It's the kind of short sighted buisness plan that Sony has with the Playstation. Why would Microsoft create exclusivity on their one system when they can take a cut of every sale on the Playstation as well? Bigger customer base means more profits to be had. Are you aware that Sony currently uses Microsofts Azure Cloud for their online servers?

These are my opinions. This is how I feel. Others may feel differently. This needs to be stated for some reason.

To be honest I hate the current track record of Blizzard-Activision. Activision in particular are just awful. Hopefully Bobby Kotick will be eventually purged.
Given the state of BA it makes sense that Microsoft are just taking them over.

Well this came out of nowhere....I guess it makes sense from a business perspective. Microsoft is going hard on Gamepass and Acti-Blizz desperately need a PR reset.
Anyway, this will take 18 months before it's finalized so we'll see what happens.

Microsoft has also just bought a better online service for gaming than they have. Or at least, one they can better adapt vs. their Xbox app on the PC which doesn't work half the time.
They have the Blizzard App and Battle.net now.

It's a bad day to be a Playstation owner. Sony will need to buy EA to keep up. Lance845 wrote:Why would Microsoft create exclusivity on their one system when they can take a cut of every sale on the Playstation as well?
They're doing it with Bethesda games, why wouldn't they do it with Activision titles? This purchase was made so they could get Call of Duty as an X-Box exclusive.

Possible.
I think it's also worth considering that X-Box is throwing a lot into Game Pass as the future of X-Box Live's business model and that model becomes a hell of a lot better when they don't have to cut deals with anyone and everyone for games.

"Xbox exclusivity" these days basically means "Xbox and PC" exclusivity. In fact, it isn't unheard of Microsoft allowing Nintendo ports of their games.

Future Bethesda games won't be on the Playstation.
What are you even talking about? Existing games wouldn't vanish, and certain games have deals in place to come out on other platforms (it's why Deathloop didn't suddenly become an X-Box game). I'm talking about future games.
