I've been in a huff about this ever since the 8th ed Ork Codex introduced rules for Clans, by making them directly analogous to Space Marine Chapters for some reason, even though in the background warbands have frequently been portrayed as comprising Orks from multiple different Clans. There was *sort of* a way around it previously but now, with the removal of sub-faction mixing across detachments in the latest matched play update, GW have hammered the final nail into the coffin of mixed-Clan warbands, And I – as an Ork aficionado of over 30 years (all the way back to Ere We Go/Freebooterz) – hate it.

Now, I can sort of understand why they did what they did – if you allow a complete free-for-all of Clan traits, you just end up with people cheesing it by cherry-picking the best trait for any given unit, which is just as boring and stupid as everyone being from the same Clan. Obviously you'd need some restrictions to avoid this, and here's what I suggest:

• Whatever Clan your Warlord is, you can take any number of units from the same Clan, following normal army composition restrictions
• Before adding any non-Warlord-Clan units, you must have at least one unit of Boyz from his Clan
• If you want to add units from a different Clan, you must include at least one Boyz mob of that Clan before adding anything else
• Non-Warlord-Clan units can't outnumber Warlord Clan units in the army*

* Still sort of thinking about how this would work – Number of models? Number of units? Overall PL?

Anyway, what we saying? So restrictive nobody would ever use it (I would, I want my army all multi-coloured) or a fun and fluffy way to approach an Ork army?

I feel like it’d work, it kinda pains me cause like you gotta take more boyz just to make your kommandos blood axes, but I think it makes sense balance wise.
I think it could be interesting if you could have like 3 specialist mobs per detachment, and like you can use specialist mobs to pick another clan maybe?

Thing is, that's kinda what I'm going for here, otherwise who *wouldn't* make their Kommandos Blood Axes – I kinda like the idea of people having to jump through hoops a bit rather than always making a unit the Clan that stereotypically has a lot of them, y'know? It sort of opens things up to encouraging a bit of variety – or at least that's the intention.

Lorewise a warboss isn’t going to spring for a whole sub-mob of boyz from a different klan that might usurp him though, they’d be much more likely just to get a squad to do a special role. And like, lorewise yea, who wouldn’t want blood axe kommandos, they’re just the best.

I'm a little unclear on why they got rid of the mixed subfaction thing. Seemed like having to spend CP for the separate detachment was the obvious tradeoff for having a mix of chapter tactic equivalents. Was it just to avoid the confusion of having to remember various traits mid-battle?

ATTENTION
. Psychic tests are unfluffy. Your longing for AV is understandable but misguided. Your chapter doesn't need a separate codex. Doctrines should go away. Being a "troop" means nothing. This has been a cranky service announcement. You may now resume your regularly scheduled arguing.

I agree with your confusion - I'm already spending three command points to take an extra detachment with a pretty small number of slots. Given how generous the core detachments are with slots right now, it's rare that I have a list where I really *need* those extra slots. It seems like the expense was balanced around taking other faction bonuses, which then got cut.

Imo GW didn´t mess up this time. 40K armies with different colour schemes don´t look good though it kinda worked for Epic.

It works pretty good for orks, and now I think about it, it works pretty well for everyone else also. I saw this really cool ultramarines/blood angels army once.
