I'm planning on getting Into bolt action, after discovering a few active players in my local club and realizing its (relatively) cheap to get into. I'm undecided about what army to try and collect though.

Hence, this thread. Why do you collect the army you have, and why would I want to collect them? Is it a personal connection to the unit/army in question? A specific mechanic or faction trait you like? Do you just think their neat? I'm curious to hear who, and why.

To be a man in such times is to be one amongst untold billions. It is to live in the cruelest and most bloody regime imaginable. These are the tales of those times. Forget the power of technology and science, for so much has been forgotten, never to be relearned. Forget the promise of progress and understanding, for in the grim dark future there is only war. There is no peace amongst the stars, only an eternity of carnage and slaughter, and the laughter of thirsting gods.

I have collected many factions but I truly love my Finnish army. Cool units on skis. They can fight the Russians or the Germans. They have great infantry. If they are to niche than look at a larger faction (Russians, Germans). The chances are you will probably end up buying two anyway.

Misery. Missouri. Who can tell the difference.

Brits are really good when running Gurkha squads and 235 Sherman's.

Germans with MG/panzerfaust/Assault Rifle spam is the default go to if you really want an easy win. You can win with this without have a single vehicle. Just got to be ready to trust in your one shot weapons.

Honestly every faction has its own merits. I picked the ones I liked the main tanks for the best and have zero regrets: US army and German Wehrmacht. I would recommend the nation whose model range you like the best, whether it be infantry or tanks.

Out of my two I like Germans best. They have an unparalleled access to equipment, squad weapon options, vehicles, tanks, and have many flavorful but not over-the-top national rules (with the exception of Tiger fear, but you can not use this by not fielding a big tank).
-officers ordering extra troops to represent blitzkrieg tactics
-machine guns having a higher rate of fire
-squad mates taking over for fallen sergeants

I disagree that German AR spam is an easy win, at least in v2.0.

My first Bolt Action force were British Commandos, organized as a 1944 assault brigade because I wanted to stick an AVRE in there. I've always been something of an Anglophile, and the creativity, make-do attitude, and dry wit in their stories really sealed it for me. I've also run Russians, also because of the brutalist ingenuity of their engineering and their sarcastic sense of humor about the whole "war" thing.

(Also I then discovered K'47 and the British robot machine gun troops, but that's another story.)

My faction of choice is Germans, but that has very little to do with their rules - which are perfectly fine, it's just not the main draw for me. The Krauts were just pioneers in so many ways. First to use radios in their vehicles, first to have guys on the ground talking directly with pilots overhead, first to develop an assault rifle, first to use combined arms warfare - the list goes on and on. On top of that, hands down the sexiest vehicles of ww2. Even their APCs were hawt. You can't look at a Hanomag and tell me it isn't a beautiful piece of engineering. Ditto for tigers and panthers. Just gorgeous tanks all around.

Free French, they're like America but with panache. Plus the late war list is fairly decent.
