So, I started with the hobby waaaaaay back in time. Back in the day, with CSM, and my first unit were some old Chaos Terminators, the models from 1996. Then, 8 years ago I left the hobby, nut now, like Abaddon and the Black Legion, I'm returning from the ashes, reborn and with more will to play than ever. But I have a problem

The old termies were smurfy

In fact, this is a problem I have with most of my old army. Marines have gotten very bigger! So I was wondering if these models are still legal because Im planning on saving money for Abaddon and some of the new and cool units

I mean, I'm already planning to put the termies up some 40mm base sizes to keep up with new bases and compensate a little the biiiig difference on stature, but, is this enough? Is it enough with changing just the base sizes? What has GW said about this problems? I really doubt Im the only one that has suffered with this transition

(And, yeah, I'm quite nostalgic with my good ol'd termies, and I want to be able to play with them)

The real chad move is to only use models from 2nd edition, scale creep be damned.

No one will mind official, nicely painted infantry miniatures on the most recent base size.

7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks do not think that purple makes them harder to see. They do think that camouflage does however, without knowing why.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.
Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers.
Orks do not have the power of believe.

They certainly are still legal as they are GW miniatures. Base sizes may be an issue with some people, and almost certainly at tournaments, but on the whole, just use what you have. now as to the base size, older termies look kinda janky on 40mm bases, after putting my 2E ones on 40mm bases, I decided to put my 1E on 32mm bases, mostly so they don't constantly fall over.
There are plenty of ways you can increase the base size without having to rebase the minis, magnets in the bottom of the bases to fix them to a 40mm base, or you can get base extenders so when someone who is younger than your minis throws toys out of their pram you can easily fix it.

Well, problem with this old minis is that they came with ranure slots for the bases, so I, not being an expert on modeling, don't want to cut those metal ranures bcs of fear that I damage the foots.

I think Ill just buy some 40mm bases, and the termies up so I can simulate the difference

But I would be very grateful if GW says something on the matter, legalising old smaller marine units.

There is a FAQ for using minis at warhammer world:

Can I still use an older version of a model?
This can depend on what the model is, however in most cases older miniatures are permitted ensuring they are still
appropriate for organised play. As such, they must adhere to WYSIWYG and be mounted on the base size of the current model.
In some cases, you may need to be flexible with regards to line of sight and measuring if the current miniature is much larger
than that which you are planning to use.

Full FAQ at https://warhammerworld.warhammer-community.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/15/2019/10/Updated-Model-Requirements.pdf

Bear in mind those are the rules for 'events', you will quite probably find that most people are far more accommodating and lenient in casual play

I use a lot of old models, probably the bulk of my collection is still 2nd-5th but some more recent. I've transferred almost all of my collection to new bases with some scenic details to make them a touch taller, and they work fine: at a distance it's plenty close enough; close up you're usually looking at individuals or squads.

I'd probably make Abbadon on a big scenic base or just get the new one, but the rest should be fine.

Or... just cut 40mm circles out of the back of a cereal packet, spray them and blu-tack your minis to them. Or glue them and fill in the empty space with greenstuff or tile grout or whatever, and then paint/base the top like the 25 mm base. It can look a little weird (especially if you're used to a base edge), but its dead easy to get the base size basics, and putting in the rest of the effort is up to your taste.

Efficiency is the highest virtue.

I glued my terminators with their 25 mm bases on 40 mm bases. Add a bit of sand to it and you are good. No problem at all.

I still use my 2nd ed Terminators, I just plopped them on 40mm bases. Those models are great though! I've no real reason to buy new ones.

That's... actually a very interesting sugestion. THe most probable thing I'll to save some money (I already have to buy bases for the disc from the burning chariot, ugh)

It will depend on your community.

This exact scenario was something that I had to explicitly lay out in event packs because some people lost their minds about it because of True Line of Sight and base sizes putting them at a perceived disadvantage.

The easiest compromise is to make sure they are on appropriate sized bases.

After that it will depend on how competitive your group is. If you are playing tournaments, I would expect some people to have some nasty diaper rash from the smaller terminators (as I said - it was brought up yearly and I had to put it in the event packs explicitly that older models were allowed which led to some backlash from the more competitive elements of my community) because you can hide them easier as they are smaller.

The old argument used to be -Yes, they are smaller but they also have a smaller footprint so auras and such are not as effective.

By allowing the smaller figures on the larger bases those players have the best of both worlds. They get the large aura coverage and the easier to hide models. This can be a big advantage if you decide to hide your Termies behind some of the larger(and cheaper point wise) troops that you can use as cheap chaff. If only GW would switch to a volume based LoS like Warmachine where only the size of the base matters, not the size or positioning of the model on the base.

I doubt many people really consider that a "big advantage", and the types of people who do think that probably aren't worth dealing with.

I should do that with my 2nd Ed Chaos Termies.

^Thanks! They served me well in my brief Black Legion stint in late 7th early 8th. I have more that I swear I'll get to, someday . . .

Bonus: Old Abaddon looks like he might actually fit in a Land Raider!

I have done that with many older models also, glue the old 25 to the newer larger bases E.g. 32, 40. Basing this way is easy, does not damage the model, and makes older dudes look bigger.

Yeah cutting the slots off won't really do any damage to the model's feet.

Terminator footsies are chunky things. They'll hardly feel a thing.

You could add additional height to each miniature with basing material. Have them stand on .5 cm rocks and that should make them the same height as the current mini.

I rebased all my old terminators to 40mm bases to keep them current. It makes a difference in the fight phase and movement phases to have them on the 40s vs a 25 but in terms of drawing LoS, they are close enough in size that the difference from a targeting perspective is marginal.

What?

Look at the picture above, if anything, they look extra janky on 25 mm. The 'feet dangling above rim' look is terrible, one of the worst in 40k, then there is the fact arms extend far bast base and you end up scraping paint job as soon as you move them as unit and/or get into melee...

This. They look way better on 40's and I'm glad I switched all 25 of mine to them.

@Insectum7 - Those are fantastic. I love the OG chaos terminators.

It's great seeing well done 2nd edition era models still getting some love. There are certainly some sculpts that have held up incredibly well over time.
