Title! But yeah, My two armies atm are Custodes 2k and Mechanicus 2.5k. I've been playing a lot of games lately with my Custodes and as fun as they are I feel like i'm missing out on a key point in the games features by just skipping the psychic phase and the Grey Knights have always interested me. Add in the fact that the new game just dropped and i am LOVING IT has really built up my hype for them. Problem is idk where to really start with them as Custodes I had like .....6 model options to choose from and the rest was history. I'm a big fan of Dark Angels and the Space Sharks(Carcharadrons GO), but the psychic side of them is a bit small and they'll be my next army once i get a bit more time. So here's my big questions and any help is good help, thanks!

1. Can i build them as Primaris? Primaris seems to be slowly replacing old marines and if i build GK and then like a year from now "Primaris GK!" drops it'll suck to replace all of em, but at the same time i kinda like that their not Primaris and i'm okay with them not being Primaris i just wanna know if its an option.
2. What books should i buy and do they have a 9th ed book out? I've not looked too much into other factions and i'm not totally sure how making a SPACE MARINEZ army...totally works?
3. ForgeWorld stuff ....Custodes i practically HAD to buy FW to even really do anything and i know GK are a bit ELITE based as well ....am i gonna have to go to FW for a lot of stuff?
4. I see mixed reviews on how good their Terminators are since the recent buff (cries in custodes tears) and i've seen a lot of people say that their just a bad points waste, but i kinda like the way they look and wouldn't mind dropping some in my eventual list or as a nice sideboard of like 5-10. With Scarab Terminators being the tippy top how do GK Termis compare?
5. Whats the factions big weakness? From what i've seen their shooting seems to be the weakest and their melee/psychic (duh) seem to be pretty up there.
6. What lists/factions do they struggle against?
7.How many models are in the average army? My custodes army is like ...26...29? I kinda wanna field a bit more are they in that same number or do they do the space marine thing and have like 50+?
8. Painting - imma be honest all the purity seals and things on em and the letterings give me pause, but they look gorgeous and i want to paint them how bad is it to paint GK?
9. I have a unsung love of Kaldor Draigo thanks to TTS and would love to run this mans in my army, but any list i've seen NEVER includes him is he like REALLY bad? It probably won't stop me from running him, but it'd be nice to know.
10. Dreadnoughts - i always see lists bring like 2-3 of em, but to me w/o they seem kinda weak where my like Telemon has a 2+ Armor and a 4+ invuln....these guys have a like ...3+ and 5+? it seems kinda bad or this just bias?

Also any tips you might suggest for starting sets to buy or things like that feel free to say something! Thanks guys/gals!

Paladins are awesome and look amazing, but I'm sure they're probably overcosted. If you build the rest of your list meta, add some Paladins for the Psychic Custodes feel.

‘What Lorgar’s fanatics have not seen is that these gods are nothing compared to the power and the majesty of the Machine-God. Already, members of our growing cult are using the grace of the Omnissiah – the true Omnissiah, not Terra’s false prophet – to harness the might of the warp. Geller fields, warp missiles, void shields, all these things you are familiar with. But their underlying principles can be turned to so much more. Through novel exploitations of these technologies we will gain mastery first over the energies of the empyrean, then over the lesser entities, until finally the very gods themselves will bend the knee and recognise the supremacy of the Machine-God"

1. Well if you are asking if someone would care if you kitbashed, power armoured GK parts with primaris mariens, then the anwser is probably no. If you are asking if there is worth to buy space marine primaris models/units in advance, then no there is no need to do that. GK are primaris free, and GW said multiple times, they have no plans to make them primaris. With no right now, yet etc Plain and simple no primaris.

2. you need the codex. That is it. GK didn't get a campaign book

3.There is no GK stuff from FW.

4.With AoC termintors got better. Thing is, strikes and interceptor got it too. Same with paladins. Termintors got better, but they are still worse then the other options you can take for GK right now. If you want to run GK terminator models, run GK paladins.

5. Anti psyker stuff, low numbers, mortal wounds, Aside for NDK you don't have any range weapons better then storm bolters. Can get swingy if you fail casting stuff in the psychic phase.

6. Everything that came after them. All the eldar, tyranids. Some armies are not as much a problem as annoying to play. Also being a faction that uses stormbolters a lot, means that with AoC being in effect games vs other marines got a bit tougher.

7. 30 interceptors, 5 strikes. 4 NDKs(a master and 3 regular ones) and then 10 to 15 strikes. the rest is mutable. Some people run librarians, some run chaplains, some run Draigo (who got even better with AoC, as he is not equiped with a stormshield).

8. GK are mostly metalic and easy to paint. Not that you can't make painting them hard. But comparing to an army of fleshy stuff or Imperial Fists, they almost paint themselfs.

9.he is not bad, just not an auto include.

10. Those are NDK. GK dreadnoughts are not taken. NDK are one of the two best units the codex have to a point where if you could run an army of just them and interceptors you would. All your heavy weapons, a ton of your resiliance, objective push etc comes from NDKs.

3 boxs of NDKs, 1 box of GK patrol (5 terminator to make paladins and/or characters, and the 4th ndk) , 5 boxs of GK power armoured troops. and you are more or less done with the army.

They cost almost the same as termintors. From a GK players perspective they are super cheap. Same way as NDK being dreadnoughts, which are faster, have better weapons, inv saves and can cast psychic powers and be your GM.

If you have to kill, then kill in the best manner. If you slaughter, then slaughter in the best manner. Let one of you sharpen his knife so his animal feels no pain.

I'm looking through tournament lists and yeah its like 2 5 man squads of strikers and 1 big like 10 man and then interceptors its mostly the same? Sometimes its just 1 big 10 blob of interceptors and i'm not sure i understand why? My plan atm is to run a big 10 man blob of Paladins 2-3 Dreadknights and 1 Grandmaster Dreadknight(cuz i like em) after that it just kinda seems like either strikers/interceptors and thats about it, do i have that right?. Right now the big things i've got questions from watching some games and looking at lists is this if ANYONE can answer please and thank you for your time:

1. Why is it like 1 random blob of like 9-10 Strike Squad and like 2 5's? Also why is their weapons a random assortment of either like that group of 10 has ALL halberds or all swords etc every list its different is it just preference/points?
2. Interceptors how....what do these do? From my understanding you want to teleport them in somewhere and use their...i think it's 12" movement to ...pester? Snag objectives or kinda be an annoying blob?? And again many lists its just like ....either all of them are getting Halberds or all swords and its random.
3. Purgation Squad/Purifer squad.....are these as bad as i'm reading them to be? Like...........what is the point in them they seem to counter the kinda whole point of the way Grey Knights kinda play? Like against DEMONS is the only time i'd THINK about taking them or ...flyers? idk.
4. I got a Land Raider Crusader that's on a shelf ready to be painted/assembled and was wondering if it's worth it to throw in the list or keep for a side board? More bolter fire isn't really what GK needs...but it makes one helluva distraction carnifex and can transport some troops well enough, but is that really worth it?
5.Techmarine/Apothacary - I WILL run 1 of these as like extra throw ins or a sideboard to have...Anyone have an experience on how they play in GK?
6. Paladin Ancient - is this just 1 model? It's in the Elite slot and i'm not really sure what it's suppose to do? I would love to run one, but ...like....what is the point of it?

Any help i'm grateful for so a thank you in advance!

Oh and why do Elves/Nids really beat up GK I've seen some close games with both and aside from just psychic shenanigans and Harlqeuins being Harlequins what makes GK weak against them.

1 - Most of the answers are on what you are facing dictates what you would use. Strike squads are Troops which means objectives. Split them how you need them. Weapons are centered on what you face also, Strength weapons versus Armor Piercing etc.

2- They have great movement and weapons. Can be teleported into enemy lines turn 1 with Stratagem.

3- Purgation I like giving 4 of them a heavy weapon and sit back firing. A Strat can give them 30" range for a turn. I run them with 4 heavy guns and a Sarg.

4- Hard to say on Vehicles right now.

5- None yet for me, I only have two NDKs and no other vehicles unless I steal from my Marine chapters.

6- I like him, but he is pure luxury. Adds +1 attack per Paladin along with other "Banner" abilities, but not necessary to a list.

both of those armies are more point efficient then the GK.

1. I would run 5 strikes. you take them as tax anyway. it is not really good to invest in to them, if you want point costing gear on someone, put it on the interceptors. as long as you avoid falchions are the options are okey. I like to run a force staff per squad, but that if for termintors. And you shouldn't be running those.

2. They are fast, grab objective, can keep up with NDKs. allow you to relocated to a different part of the board. something a unit of strikes, termintors, paladins etc just can not do. ah and they are cheap comparing to strikes or other infantry GK have.

3. There was a time where people would run 5 purgators without heavy weapons. But in the end, GK heavy weapons for infantry units are not really worth taking a lot of the time. And both of those units suffer from being, slower then interceptors and being more costly then strikes.

4. You are never going to have "free" 250+pts to take a Land Raider in a GK force. GK vehicles are NDKs, and that is more or less it. Some people were running or trying to run rhinoes to protect interceptors and strikes, but now we get AoC it is not really needed anymore.

5. Run the apothecary then. I use 2, but then again I run paladins and terminators.

6. yes. one model with a banner. . s
kip him

so run 3 5 man strike squads and then interceptor it up...fair enough i also plan on running a blob of 10 paladins mainly because i like the models and with AoC they seem to be able to be a hearty threat. And yeah i'm not gonna use the Crusader as of yet i will paint it up GK style, but it's a sideboard for now. I like the elite style lists of Custodes/GK as they take some know-how on how to pilot them and their models look great. I might take a heavy weapons team of like 5 just to see how they do. Thanks!

Also, looking at the Dreadknights is there a reason to not take both the Psliencer and the Heavy Psicannon + Sword? Like it just seems...good to take both heavy weapons?
