‘League of Extraordinary Gentlemen’ Reboot by Hulu

Twentieth Century Studios is returning to the Victorian age of heroes.

The Disney studio division is rebooting The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, the acclaimed comic book franchise created by author Alan Moore and artist Kevin O’Neill.

Justin Haythe, whose diverse credits range from Revolutionary Road, the drama starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet, to the Jennifer Lawrence spy thriller Red Sparrow, has been tapped to pen the screenplay for the project, which is intended to be made as a feature for Hulu.

Don Murphy, who produced the 20th’s original adaptation of League in 2003, is back as a producer on the new iteration. Joining him is producing partner Susan Montford as well as Erwin Stoff of 3 Arts Entertainment.

A sort of Justice League of literary heroes from Victorian England, and mining works such as Dracula, Sherlock Holmes and Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, the initial concept featured Mina Murray, Allan Quatermain, Captain Nemo, Dr. Jekyll, and the Invisible Man squaring off against Fu Manchu, Professor Moriarty and aliens from H. G. Wells’ War of the Worlds.

The first two volumes were published by an imprint of DC Comics starting in 1999, but the creator-owned series moved to indie publishers after Moore, the author of comic classics Watchmen and V for Vendetta, saw his infamously prickly relationship with DC deteriorate even further. Several other volumes and graphic novels followed, with the last storyline wrapping up in 2019.

When the series initially hit, it was a sensation, thanks to Moore’s high-concept but dark and cynical tone, and O’Neill complementing art, which captured the dingy and scrawly edge of the era. The first volume won the Bram Stoker Award for best illustrated narrative while the second won an Eisner Award for best-limited series.

The 2003 movie famously took liberties with the source material, adding Tom Sawyer as a U.S. Secret Service agent, for example, and is notable as being the last role played by Sean Connery, who retired from acting soon after. The movie was also known for its troubled production, with Connery coming to blows with director Stephen Norrington. Still, the movie proved to be a moneymaker, grossing over $179 million worldwide, and a popular seller on DVD at the time.

Twentieth has attempted several reboots, including developing a female-centric feature take as well as a pilot for a series. None has gotten off the ground.

Sources say that Haythe and company are returning to the core comic books for their take.

Murphy and Montford are currently developing a Buck Rogers feature and series with George Clooney’s Smokehouse, set up at Legendary, and are coming off production on the Vampire Academy television series.

Disney Studio and they’re putting it on Hulu and not D+? Also I hadn’t realized the first was Sean’s last role.

Woo. Are they really going with the Stereotype of Yellow Peril Himself as a major villain? That's a choice.

Haythe's listed credits make him sound like a nobody, and Murphy being back producing this after the 2003 mess is just... wow. OK. Going to need _lots_ of popcorn for this gakshow.

I'm amused at another shot at Buck Rogers, too. Just for the connection with Lorraine Williams (who drove TSR into the ground) and her obsession with the 'family property' (despite being the granddaughter of the syndicator of Buck, not the creator).

They allude to it, but it's actually this movie that convinced Connery to retire. He didn't decide it would be his last movie going in, it was making this movie that caused him to quit.

Also, when they're saying "Disney Studio" in this context think they mean Hulu? They're a Disney owned property after all.

Interesting, I’ve always thought LoEG had a lot of potential as a film/TV series. It’s such a shame the 2003 film was such a mess. It had some real good elements (cast was pretty good, production design amazing), but the plot was a bit of a mess and it lost me when they just completely ignored physics in the Venice scene.

Also, the article isn’t saying they’re going to use Fu Manchu as the villain in the new series, it’s just summarising the graphic novels.

Buck Rogers is also interesting, but are they talking about the 70’s TV series or the 30’s film serials?!

Technically Star Wars is a Buck Rodgers rip-off... But I get your point and I agree.

Haven't read the Alan Moore comic but I did enjoy the Sean Connery movie.

Oh, and Buck Rogers was my childhood! Loved that show to bits and totally geeked out when this aired...

...but yeah, I'd love a new show so long as they keep it cheerful...unlike the other certain Universial sci-fi show they murdered...

I think the Venice scene is perhaps the most nonsensical thing I have seen in a movie. I mean, seriously: what.

LXG is difficult to translate to screen. Much of its appeal is based on how incredibly rough it is under the Victorian mannerisms and dresses, and how it pulls no punches. Most of the characters are brutal, if not outright psychotic or murderous. They are also incredibly racist and/or chauvinistic. And that's just the protagonists. Lets not even mention all the sexual content or terrifying violence. There is absolutely no chance Disney could release anything even remotely faithful, even R rated. So basically what we can expect is like the movie, everything so watered down that the characters become extremely generic and no chemistry together whatsoever.
