Just finished watching and there were a few standouts, as usual.

My three fave episodes were "Night Of The Mini Dead", "Swarm" and "Jibaro".

NOTMD was a fun, refreshing take on the whole Z apocalypse trope. Also, got my modelling juices flowing, always a plus!

Swarm was a cool take on a Tyranidesque multispecies organism, would love some of this sort of thing in GW's tyranid lore as well.

Finally, Jibaro was a jawdroppingly gorgeous tale, kind of reminds me of some Asian old fairytales. I can't even believe it was all CGI, uncanny valley was broken at many points! I'm not sure GW can ever reach this visual quality with their animations..

What were your favourites?

I enjoyed the first one, Exit Strategy? Whatever, sequel to the robot trio from the earlier season.

Mini Dead is pretty glorious. Stupid, but in an enjoyable way.

Jibaro… I like the idea of it, and it’s hard to believe that’s cg and not live, but some of the movement and action is too manic for my tastes I think. Too much flailing.

Overall the season was quite worth the watch. I think stronger than the second.

I liked the 3 robots one, Swarm and Mason's rats.

S3 is about the same as the others - a 50/50 swing and miss rate.

Swarm goes back to 1988 or 1989 (I know I read it back in 1989 or so - Bruce Sterling (cyberpunk writer) included it in his collection "Crystal express".

Before the tyranids became the incarnation that has been built on to this point. (The tyranids still had ambassador drones back then - Zoats - it was still RT years, and that was still the fashion.)

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.

That is not dead which can eternal lie ...

... and yet, with strange aeons, even death may die.

Just started but:

1. Three Robots - good fun
2. Bad Travelling - eh ok didn't do a whole lot for me
3. The very pulse of the machine - really really like this one

I think I feel that way about all the seasons. Each has a couple standouts, rest are filler. But given enough seasons, a good chunk of quality works should emerge.

This series seemed rather darker than the other two seasons. Pulse of the machine was kind of uplifting, and the rats one was entertaining, but the others are all pretty morbid. Nothing like Lucky 13 of the first series, in my view. However the quality of each episode is just amazing. Very glad to have watched.

They’ve all had some pretty dark episodes. The boat one may be the single darkest they’ve done yet, though.

Pretty good - liked this season better than the last.

Three Robots - good fun
Bad Travelling - eh ok didn't do a whole lot for me
The very pulse of the machine - really really liked this one will rewatch
Night of mini dead - great
Swarm - ok
Kill Team - meh.
Mason's Rats - great but felt it ended a little quick
Vaulted Halls - my least liked this season
Jibaro - holy frak. Still processing - certainly visually impactful yikes

Pulse of the Machine reminded me a lot of an Iain M Banks short story of an injured astronaut crossing a barren moon. That didn’t end well either

I hope the Banks estate allow some of his short stories in, because I would really like that

As always I enjoyed this season, and there were some standouts, but I felt the storylines weren't as varied or original as Seasons 1 & 2.

That's not a direct criticism as such, because it was still solid, more of a personal preference.

However, having read an interview with the director of Jibaro I'm pretty blown away by the fact that was all done with key-frame animation rather than mo-cap.

This season felt shorter, even though there was one more episode than S2.

One of the episodes was only like five minutes long though.

Same for S1 & S2 - the yogurt & Christmas ones. Looking at Wikipedia, S2 has a total runtime of 108 minutes and S3 128 minutes (S1 is 221 minutes).

Night of the Mini Dead was short and zippy but it had me in absolute stitches, and really shows off what's so great about LD&R's flexibility as a format. Not exactly life changingly cerebral, but a bolt of mad genius all the same. The Popemobile's last stand brings a smile to my face every time I think of it.

While I quite enjoyed Vaulted Halls and Kill Team Kill, and recognise that they both did really different things with superficially similar premises, I think they probably should have spaced them over two seasons or something, because I reckon those two in particular probably make S3 feel a bit samier than it deserves to.

Really impressed at how much better than S2 this was overall that said, and imho it's more generally solid than S1. Jibaro was far more successful and interesting than The Witness I think, it would probably be my favourite if not for Very Pulse...

Wait, what? So are you saying that not only was it 100% CGI, but it was also MANUALLY ANIMATED?!

madness.. This production team is something to watch out for! Can't wait to see what they do next.

EDIT: Found the interview.. So this Alberto Mielgo also made "the Witness" from Season 1? I need to rewatch it.. This guy is outrageously talented.

Yes, all in all, totally worth the few hours to binge it all. And, yes, it did seem so dark with Bad Travelling being among the saddest and shocking to me.

Pulse of the Machine? Blech, while I was entertained trying to find out what will happen, it was my least favorite.

The two warrior episodes - Kill Team and Vaulted Halls were pretty good and definitely kept me on the edge of my seat.

Mason's Rats and NOTMD were hilarious and thoroughly entertaining.

Swarm...meh...

Jibaro - Holy crap!!! Mind-blowingly gorgeous and mesmerizing - I am so glad they ended with this feast for the eyes, as it made me feel the whole season was definitely worth the time to watch.

Maybe it's my tastes, but this season has nothing on some of the first two. Some of the ones like Beyond the Aquila Rift, Lucky 13, Snow in the Desert and Sonny's Edge were just damn fine sci-fi.

Jibaro was a little too manic for me, though it was beautiful.

It's an interesting upshot of the whole anthology thing, because Snow in the Desert did nothing for me but a lot of folks seem to love it, where Very Pulse... hit me right in the Alan Watts/Carl Sagan/Solaris zone with the bonus of all the Moebius visuals.

I've just watched the first two and I've got to say I'm surprised people in this thread didn't like Bad Travelling.

I thought it was superb, a really good take on cannibalism and the Custom of the Sea. Good animation style, a suitably dark score. Everything you could possibly want in a horror short story.

Yeah maybe I was too harsh on it; when I watched it I was immediately drawn in - l liked the setup and the monster crab thing being intelligent and such but it was soooo grim and kind of nasty. Dunno maybe will watch again - I guess that is the beauty of these shorts - its not much of a time sink/investment to revisit them. There was one in the first season - "Blue" - first watch didn't think much of it then second it kinda was amazing and became one of my favorites from that season.

Yeah, I liked it, gave me The Terror vibes, which is about the highest praise I have to give anything.

A rough ranking

Jibaro - very pretty, plus the evil and greed of the conquistadors, so whats not to like?
The very pulse of the machine - Better take than most on the old survive in a suit sci fi short. Reminded me of the Ian M Banks walking in a suit story
Night of mini dead - Just amusing fun. Entire Zombie film in a few minutes and just as good
Mason's Rats - Fun but an off note ending considering he had been their nemesis for a while

Swarm - Fairly stock sci fi short. Competently done, even if it had a thin reason for the experiments being done in situ. Had a good in universe explanation for why the swarm had survived so long.
Bad Travelling - Competent, in the style of Arcane, about as good.

Three Robots - Bit disappointing, not as amusing as the first, seemed more preachy.
Vaulted Halls - Standard Cthulu fare
Kill Team - Weakest of the set, but I guess a standard tweenager military comic

I would say a more consistent level, but without the same number of standout episodes, but also fewer duds.
