Heya everyone,

I'm planning on doing a Salamanders force for 30k, based on the new launch box. As I'm pretty new to 30k (and obviously to the new edition), I wouldn't mind a few helpful tips to get figure out what to build.

Having seen a bunch of pre-reviews and unboxings, it appears the launch box is roughly almost 2000 points. I love the idea of a bunch of big tactical blobs, so I am thinking of just doing two 20-marine tactical squads out of the launch box. Of course, I want the Salamanders flair, so I'm thinking of getting another box of marines plus the Special Weapons box to make 10 flamers marines, and the one heavy weapons box to make 10 heavy flamers. In addition, I already have a random FW 30k legion apothecary model and most of an event exclusive FW tartaros terminator character (he's missing his head, but should be painless to put a new one in)

That would make my initial purchase basically be the launch box, an extra box of marines, special weapons box, and the heavy flamers box, plus the Liber Astartes, and would give me a mix of:
2 praetors, tartaros praetor, legion apothecary, 10 cataphractii terminators, 40 tactical marines, 10 flamer marines, 10 heavy flamer marines, contemptor, spartan.

Here's the questions!

Does that seem like a good core force for Salamanders? Since the Legion suffered so many casualties, all these 'new' recruits in Mk VI makes sense in my mind, but I''m wondering if the "extra marine box" I buy would make sense to be Mk III dudes to represent the fellas that escaped Isstvan, and might look cool on the tabletop with a unit of the hard-bitten mk III survivors and then a bunch of fresh faced mk VI newbies. This would allow me to use 20 out of the 40 starter mk VI for the flamers and heavy flamers, the other 20 Mk VI for tacticals, and the 20 mk III marines as Veterans? As from what I understand from the playtest rules the Salamanders can have a Rite of War wherein tactical support squads with flamers can become Line infantry as long as that detachment has a Centurion? (and I can use a praetor model as a centurion, right?)

As for the Terminators, maybe put them in the Spartan and have them with lightning claws and heavy flamer?

Anyways, thanks for any advice!

The box will be a good start regardless of what you do but I would personally wait until the rules come out and build an army from there rather than off leaked playtest rules.

especially as by time you have the rules you'll also have the minis.

the releases for the first wave are the special weapons box and a heavy weapons box with missile launchers and heavy bolters BTW so no heavy flamers avalaible just yet.

I'd definatly pre-order a support weapon box, as it'll contained "10 of everything" so...

Opinions are not facts please don't confuse the two

Thanks ya'll - I had posted before the predorder preview went up, so I'll have to wait on the heavy flamers.

Waiting a little bit to see the full Salamanders rules makes sense; I just like to prepare - and I'm the kind of painter who paints an entire army at once and then never touches it again, so I like to make sure I've got everything I'll want

I’m also thinking about starting a Salamanders force with the new box. Thinking about equipping ten of the ten of the tac marines with flamers and using the rest with bolters (though really tempted to make a meltagun support squad too).

My question is about terminators. A friend of mine doesn’t want the termies in his box and has offered to exchange my contemptor dreadnought for them. Is this a good swap? I’m thinking that the terminators are a bit slower than the contemptor, but I think they probably have more firepower/strength overall (plus more flamers!). What do you think?

You can´t compare apples with oranges. Terminators are heavy infantry and dreadnoughts are walkers. They both have pros and cons and should exist in any army with the exception of maybe lists which feature low points.

So for example terminator units can act as wonderful bodyguard units for your HQ choices and can be quickly transported around the battlefield via a Spartan. The vehicle allows them to be moved around AND assault in the same turn providing a large threat range. Dreadnoughts on the other hand must rely on drop pods for swift speed and they can´t assault when they arrive. On the other hand walkers are IMMUNE to low strength weapons and are fearless in melee making them perfect tarpit units.

So, I now have two spruces of Cataphractii for my Salamanders (though, unfortunately no shields). I’ve decided to build one squad with fists and combi-bolters (and as heavy flamers, of course). My question is, how should I build the other squad? I was going to go with double lightning claws, but I’m thinking they’ll be pretty useless unless I put them in the Spartan. I’m also considering just building everything with bolters and fists (and flamers). Anyone have any advice?
