Hello,
I've run a few terrain building competitions on the Terrainbuilding sub over the past few years. As tradition there the previous winners have decided the theme of the next competition! The winners wrote the following:
This is an invite to Dakka Dakka members to compete in the contest
Present a terrain piece that represents a structure, spaceship, wild place or a fantastic location. Try to incorporate the “Call of the Elements” in the submission.
It may be an elven temple with wings dedicated to the four seasons and their respective elements or a dilapidated reactor bursting with nuclear power. Waves and the storm battering an old lighthouse standing strong atop the cliffs. The call of the elements might also originate from fiery crystals that lure dwarven miners into the mountain. Or it is the call heard by scientists working in a chemical lab in a research spaceship. Write a short paragraph about your piece. Explain what inspired you or tell more of the story of your piece
Current Prize Pool: $500 USD. This will be expanded on in the future. Last Season had $250 sent to each of the winners primarily due to Eric's generosity. Both Eric and I want this to be a regular competition for years to come.

IF YOU WANT TO ENTER:
1. Post on the Reddit thread to inform us that you’re working on an entry and I’ll follow up near the competition. You can enter up until October. Eric also has an email list. You may edit your post later on to add finished photos. You need to have a Reddit account and post the entry somewhere on the r/TerrainBuilding sub.
2. You are required to show a minimum of 3 photos – (1) PHOTO of some of your materials before they are painted, (1) WORK IN PROGRESS PHOTO of any stage, and (1) final photo of your painted work. Provide as many photos as you’d like within reason. I recommend dropping them in an IMGUR album and linking that in your post.
3. Write a one paragraph minimum description and give your artwork a title. Make sure to label it as [
RAW] if it’s in the
RAW Category, [3DPrint] if it’s in the 3D Print Category , or [MASTER] if it’s in the Master Crafter category.
DEADLINE: On or before October 3rd 2022 you can update your post here or create a thread on the subreddit showing off your entry any time. I'll be handing the photos and final entries to the judges during the week of October 3rd. It may take them 1-2 weeks to decide a winner. We may change the current way this contest is judged but it'll be handled by folks you know in the terrain community. Same with the prizes this will be expanded upon in the future.
///// Master Crafter Category /////
This category is for the terrain builder who want’s to have freedom in their entry as it allows anything from the use of store bought model kits, 3D prints, resins,
MDF, and so on. There is a generous limit on 3D printing for this category to limit the 3D print to 30% of the total volume of the piece. This is to allow talented artists to add some 3D prints to their entry but not allow it to dominate this category. Heavily 3D printed entries should stay within the 3D Print category below.
///// RAW Category /////
This is the category for the scratch builders and mad artists who want to test their skill. You cannot use any 3d prints, pre-bought model kits, or official models of any sort. You are allowed to use models that you’ve casted yourself in resin, if you’ve sculpted them, and you can use a small amount of skulls and bits. Materials that will be used can be anything from rocks, foamcore, wood, plants, balsa, cardboard packaging, metal chicken wire, xps foam chunks, plasticard, cans, paper, and trash. Quick Note: Statis Grass Tufts are fine (a Redditor asked this) as well as moss or lichen acceptable. However you cannot use premade Tree armatures like what Woodland Scenic makes.
MDF is also banned. Reach out to the Reddit Moderator team for approval on specific items.
///// 3D Print Category /////
80% or more of the piece has been 3D printed, all parts must be credited to the author extensively if you are not the original artist. The extra step here is providing the creators with credit). If you will you’ll have to list out all 3d printed parts.
This is also to flex your modelling skills if you’re a creator of a kickstarter or a company to show off your kits. Remember it must be fully painted and the judges will be looking to see how far you can take 3D prints. This category still allows the use of any normal terrain materials including xps foam, sand, rocks, and
MDF.
Rules:
• Size Limit: 30x30" inches with no height limit
• You can have multiple entries but only 1 in each category
• You will need to be able to provide sources of the models that were printed if you win the 3D Printed category.
• Your entry does not have to be in any particular scale
• Team entries are allowed
• Recasting is allowed for all categories including
RAW. This is in relation to duplicating pieces with plaster/dental/clay/ stone/resin. E.g. Casting your own bricks is fine. If you’re extensively resin casting… please post photos of the molds so we can see they are not store bought or from e.g. Hirst Arts.
RAW Category is meant to stay really hard lined.
• You cannot use a piece of terrain that you have previously worked on or posted online. This includes using an older project and re-doing it to match the current competition. You have to have started it in JUNE 2022.
• Moderators can enter the competition but cannot win.
Thank you
