I just introduced myself over in the introduction thread and warned everyone I would be asking some newbie questions. I just got my son the Dominion box set for his birthday, it's our first dive into miniature war-games. He choose this set because he wanted to learn to play Stormcast Eternals and it offered a second army so I could learn with him. Well he is already researching what to get next to expand his collection. Right now he is working extra chores to save up for Stormdrake Guards and/or some Prosecutors. Below is a list of the Stormcast miniatures that came in the Dominion set. What are some other figures he could add to this army? I am trying to get a few ideas for future gifts.

Knight-Arcanum (Stormcasts)
Knight-Vexillor with Banner of Apotheosis (Stormcasts)
Lord-Imperatant with Gryph-hound (Stormcasts)
3 x Praetors (Stormcasts)
3 x Annihilators (Stormcasts)
Yndrasta, the Celestial Spear (Stormcasts)
10 x Vindictors (Stormcasts)

Thank you all for taking the time to read this. Please let me know if there is anything I need to add or if I started this thread in the wrong place.

Welcome aboard!

Your son is on the right track in wanting Stormdrake Guard - great models. In terms of other figures to add, I think that Judicators would be a solid choice. They give him a ranged option that is strong but not overpowering. At the risk of getting booed off the stage for suggesting something overpowered, a box of Vanguard Raptors with Longstrike Crossbows is a compact and powerful choice. Being only three models its also not too hard to get assembled, painted and on the tabletop.

Judicators aren't actually that much softer pick than raptors...For points twice the shots so dam2 vs dam1 and 2 mw vs 1 mw is compensated. Judicators have more wounds per points and can go for 15 bodies. Apart from guarding better from random unit stealing objective by rushing into it(no 10 hobgrots sneakily running into objective outnumbering them) it provides even more oomph for shoot twice/all out attack/other buffs.

Thank you all for the recommendations. I'm sure there will be more questions as we both dive further down this new hobby. who know I may even look into choosing an army.

Fulminators are always a nice choice, hit like trucks on the charge but if he’s already saving up for stormdrakes best stick with that. A Lord Relictor makes a fantastic general, probably the best the stormcast can field imo and a lot of fun to play with. My advice is to stay away from longstrikes unless everyone’s army is going hard, or if you just can’t resist the pull try not to combine them with thunderbolt volley as frankly it’s oppressive. Also with annihilators I’d argue it’s worth going big or going home, either max out your battle line with them and use them to hold objectives or don’t use them at all as they’re too easy to ignore/shoot to pieces

Also if your son is taking storm drakes you better hope any list you bring isn’t too soft or you’re in for an unholy krumpin’

One way to tone down raptors is not reinforce. Adding "single" to unit would tone down a lot.

(alternatively ban double shoot for reinforced units like one holy command already does).

3 isn't that big deal and even double shooting ca starts to have interesting alternatives.

Thanks for all the tips. I have some great ideas now for future gifts.

Sad news though, over the weekend we drove around to a few of our local game stores. There is not much of a AOS scene around us. They did take our information and said they were trying to grow the scene. I mentioned that I would try and help if I could, not knowing how but after seeing how excited my son has been, I have to try something.

The store closest to us offered to let us use loaner 40k armies to play with during their open play events. I can't lie and say I am excited about purchasing and building a whole other army. Hopefully my son and I can play a few AOS games at the shop and drum up some interest.

Speaking of interest, would this be a place to share so pictures of our armies being built and painted? They won't be up to you all's standards but it would be nice to get some feedback. I have started to enjoy painting all the minis with my son. It a nice way to relax and talk about our days together.

It would 100% be a great place. There's even a whole painting and modelling section where you can show off what you've done and get feedback, help and more. Don't worry about how good you are, everyone has to start somewhere and many are more than happy to help and guide people along.

As for growing the scene, sometimes it can feel like an uphill struggle and if you're growing a game (any game) then appearing regularly at a club/group and playing games and being willing to demo and run intro games can be a powerful set of tools in drawing people in. At the very least turning up with your son and playing games is a great way to show case the game and the fun you're having and sometimes that's all gamers need to encourage them into trying something new.

Wow, so I guess I need to choose an army and get to battling.

I'll take some picture and share them soon. This weekend we are priming all the miniatures and going to start painting them in more detail. Again, thank you for the recommendations and warm welcoming.

Building a gaming community is tough, but if you start playing games people will notice and might start coming out to play themselves. If nothing else, you and your son can have some great games. I got my eldest son into 40K when he was 11 - we still have games.
